  • Managed to find what I think is an real gramophone horn but its in a bit of a poor state. I'm going to use it for some experiments but I also hope to combine it with a few other bits I also show to make an old style gramophone.

If that had fine enough control and if you could attach the appropriate reproducer you could play a 120rpm vertical cut pathé record on it

Good idea. 👍 I hadn't thought of that! Don't have any records like that at the moment but always looking out for unusual and one off records, some of which I hope to play in future videos. Thanks 😀

Interesting. It would indeed be nice to know the outcome of your project; I reckon that I'll have to subscribe to see it.Thank you so much!

Thanks 😀 and thanks for subscribing 😀 I keep thinking about this project. There are various options I have for the motor, including just replacing it. I need to decide how to refurbish the horn. May just need to trim the rusted edges back before repainting. I have just bought a suitable sound box for it, so the only unknowns really are the tone arm (which I am sure I can fabricate) and the horn bracket which might be more of a problem, at least to make one that looks half decent! Anyway, it's going to take some time, but I would like to get it done. So far I have used the horn on a fairly crude DIY gramophone in a couple of videos. Don't know if you have seen them yet? Thanks 👍 😀

@@mrrgstuff I see. This is the first of your videos that I've seen; I'll be looking into the others over the succeeding weekends. I'm sure there's so much that I can learn from your channel. Again, thank you so much!

might do a bit better like you say with a old portable motor and then you can allso use the platter and save messing about with that one .

Thanks 😀 👍. Yes, the wooden box is the best bit of this unit and even that's not great. I've not really played with this one any more, but have tinkered with the fake Garrard in the other unit I have

I wonder if you could redesign the governor mechanism, maybe by the arm that presses the pad against the governor to slow it down, it might be a worthwhile base. Problem is, the motor is made to the standard everything else in India is made to, which is utter garbage. Their manufacturing makes China look like American or British manufacturing BITD in comparison. India finally figured out how to make an AM/FM radio using chips that have been around for 40 years and the manufacturing is so bad that they are falling apart in transit. The worst and nastiest plastic you have ever laid your hands on.

Physically the motor is not too bad. All the parts are there and it does run reasonably well. The main issue is that nobody (apart from me 😉) is expecting the motor to function for the purposes of playing records so no attempt is made to ensure it works at the right speed. I forget if I've mentioned it but even the sellers of these machine on ebay often note that the speed runs too high. Technically I think the problem is that the governor springs are too stiff and replacing those with softer ones would allow the governor to expand more by centripetal force at a lower speed and engage the braking disc earlier. Personally I find it fascinating that there is a whole industry building motors to a 100+ year old design and they don't even work at the right speed! 😅. Not sure when I'll get back to this motor. I do have some plans for both the base unit and the horn, though my stock of parts has improved so it won't be quite like I describe here. Thanks 😀 👍

The horn is real as far as I can tell , and the base unit is definitely a very modern fake. They were not bought together, but I think that is clear in the video that the base unit is a modern fake. Thanks
