Same! I love making little videos & seeing people's reactions when they see my photos... Just hate it when people are like "yeah you like it as a hobby, but when it becomes your job you'll not like it..."
those people who complain that they have to work as a photographer dont truly deserve the job imo. i would love for my passion to be my means of living. i would still try and make time to shoot the subjects that i love and do whatever else i could to not remain stale as a professional photographer. i think thats what people are really saying when they dont like it as a job- their creativity just stops and they forget to challenge themselves like how we do as beginners.
*might be coming from a biased perspective if you cant tell by my username* But, another unconventional tip for anyone out there is see if there are any local comic/sci-fi/anime conventions in your area because there are TONS of cosplayers willing to spend some money to get photos of their costumes done during conventions. You can easily get multiple clients in one day and most cosplayers already expect photographers to have hourly rates so you can figure out a price you think suits your skill level and go from there. And a great thing about this as well is you dont necessarily need to pay to attend the event since most photoshoots at conventions happen outside of where you would need a badge/wrist band. This works especially well of you're also just looking for experience with shoots and working with people in general. It may seem stupid, nerdy and the photos you get might not fit into your portfolio very well but its honestly a great way to make some money or gain some practice if you happen to have any conventions in your area.
PhantomPhoenixCosplay but always be careful to check that the con doesn’t have any photographers already booked! You don’t want to ruffle any feathers and risk getting kicked or in trouble. Other than that this is a great idea.
sorry to be so offtopic but does any of you know of a way to get back into an instagram account? I stupidly forgot the login password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me.
I got here this way: 1. search for an EOS R review in 2018 2. Got McKinnon’ed 3. Obviously being the German I am, loved Chris’ videos (Peter’s video about the 100k lead me there) 4. Got directed by Chris to Lizzie’s channel. Point being: UA-cam is a social platform. Connect with other creatives! I might have never gotten here otherwise, but I am happy I did and I am staying because the content is great and valuable. Much love from Germany to you two!
Holy mackerel I just found your channel and it's soooo good. Amazing to see a woman in this space, as there aren't enough on youtube. Only 25 videos and 14k subs! A few more videos and you're gonna be huge. Subbed!
i bought my first dslr 3 weeks ago. I search and subscribed to peter mckinon benjamim thomas heaton nigel and etc. Now i found you whos sharing and helping a beginner like me.. thank you for enlightening us lizzie
I just discovered your channel but I find it super helpful and refreshing! These tips seem pretty basic but it's probably the best advice I've gotten so far on that particular subject: simple, useful, accessible, and mostly, not from above an ivory tower. Thank you!
Will check the contest out for sure! The most important thing that got me started was just doing projects for my friends and family - there's less pressure and it feels a way more comfortable - and then as you build more and more confidence and a portfolio to show off then it all starts snowballing!
That's also a great idea! Be careful though as you get more experienced, family members can start to ask quite a lot from you! I've been asked to shoot family members weddings and I decline because 1. They're A LOT of work. 2. It would be so terrible if for some reason they weren't happy with the results and there would be some very permanent lasting awkwardness.
See you on Shuttout Dani! And I can agree with you - starting with shooting your family and friends, family parties etc is always a great start. And then people WANT you to come as a photographer and you can start building your position from that easily!
Lizzie Peirce agreed and agreed! Once you've done a couple of things and feel like you're ready it's definitely time to start charging - it took a while for me to learn my worth but now I feel more confident to work in a way that actually works for me :)
Of all of the videos I have seen, the was so simple yet so helpful. I for some reason never even thought of Facebook groups, or contests with small fees! Thank you so much for this information! Definitely subbed!
Yeaaah no one should get into photography just for the sole purpose of making money. Everyone who does that fails and quilts after sending tons of money. It should start off as a hobby of passion I’ve seen people try and make Money when they can’t even control a DSLR.
What kills me is people like one of my friends who does photography for money (he also enjoys it) who only shoot on automatic and don't correct for things like backlighting, and just never even try to shoot on manual or even aperture priority. He also constantly puts me down because I shoot film, but that's just bonus info I guess.
@@chainsaw2046 I get what you're saying, i'm starting into wedding photography, and in my city (located in mexico) i see a lot of automatic photographers that get a lot of paid work and even tho some have better cameras, the pictures still look terrible, i once found like 2 or 3 FB pages of some photographers in my city and when i started checking their pics i thought the profiles were a joke, they upload absolutely everything and it's clear that they just take out the pictures from the camera to the pc, no edition no fixing, they even upload the out of focus ones, and i'm not talking about an artistic choice to have bokeh or have the subjects out of focus on purpose, more like not giving the camera enought time to do the autofocus in what you want. I still have a lot to learn, but damn when i saw those pics i thought they looked like the first couple pics i took when i just got my first camera.
I’m about 3-4 months into doing photography so I am a beginner I really do enjoy it as a hobby but it would be nice to be able to make some money off of it through my photography website
Maddie Games put in the time first, go out and shoot random things everyday. Develops your style and learn your camera inside and out. I’ve been doing it part time for the past 8 years
"Everyone"? Trust me, i know a few who are ONLY in it for the money and have been doing it for years. We have to realize that some people honestly don't care about the artistic value or what "real" photographers put into their work. The client sometimes just wants an airbrushed picture that can be achieved with the latest smart phone.
I'm a photographer. I've won some awards. My photographer friend had me do her wedding and engagement shoots. I don't travel to exotic locations (they require funds).
