Bobby always had a smile. I got to meet him at age 7, at Disneyland in 1957. I remember him as being very kind to all his fans. I saw no ego back then. And he was perfect for Lawrence Welk show later on. Yep, Lawrence Welk...Whew what a sappy show that was. My folks made me watch it every week! I laughed out loud when they once covered a Brewer & Shipley song 'One Toke Over The Line' and said it was a contemporary religious song....
As a 12 year old like most boys i had a crush on Annette..But a number of years later as an adult and watching repeats..I have to say Darlene was the ''perfect'' Mouseketeer..She had looks, maybe most talented, and had the best enthusiasm..If i had to pick one to represent the show..It would of been Darlene
As Mouseketeer Sharon Baird remembered, “Jimmie was one of the nicest human beings I’ve ever known in my life. He was genuine and he didn’t speak down to kids, he included them. He was a great person to look up to.”
ah they truely had talent back then, not like many today that specialize in one area though there are still many that do multi talents, you just dont see them in large amounts like this anymore, and I wish disney showed all the seasons and shows when they had vault disney back in the 1990's and so on they only showed so many episodes after all.
You’re right about Vault Disney only airing certain episodes. From what I remember, they only showed episodes from the third season (and on some occasions the first season as well, but never the second season for some reason, which is a shame cause that was probably the best season in my opinion).

Thank you so much for your kind words! Darlene is an incredibly talented singer, and I feel lucky to have her on my channel. I'm glad you enjoyed her performance!
I feel like you put this video up just for me. I've been waiting 41 years to see this. When I was 5-6 years old, I had this record, and would play it over and over again in my bedroom. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this video, and in such great quality, too! You rock!!!

DOES ANYONE ELSE SEE PRINCESS AURORA MEETING PHILLIP IN THE WOODS???? I mean the dancing is so similar, not to mention their outfits are really close as well!
Darlene Gillespie had such a wonderful, natural stage presence! I enjoyed watching her as"Corky" in one of the Mouseketeer series. Bobby Burgess was a good dancer also, and I enjoyed watching him dance on The Lawrence Welk shows in later years.
I love Darlene Gillespie she was such a great singer and dancer but when Annette Funicello became a singing and acting star, Darlene became very jealous as a youth and an adult. She did not want to be in the same room as Funicello at Mouseketeer reunions. She was banned from participating in the 40th anniversary Mickey Mouse Club documentary because of her criticisms of Disney and Funicello. 😮
Darlene Gillespie: probably one of the most, if not the most talented Mousketeer. She could do it all...sing, dance, and act. I had an enormous crush on her way back when I was a kid.....Then I heard what happened to her later on, when she finished with the Mousketeers, but was never able to repeat that success, ending up in fraud schemes, and jail.
Its because she didn't kiss Walt's ass, like Annette. Im 44 years old, way before my time, but I read, and research stuff that I have questions about. She wasn't a yes man type like Annette. She was full of herself, but you have to be when you're in the entertainment business.
@@metalmacabre9991 Kissing Walt Disney's ass had nothing to do with it. Darlene developed a jealousy obsession, watching Annette Funicello take away the spotlight from her. There was a rivalry between the two girls, but Annette became more popular with fans, which Darlene began to resent. Her jealousy of Funicello affected her attitude and she was passed up by Disney because of it. For example, she could have had the role of Pollyanna, but again, Disney didn't trust her acidic temper, and passed her over tor the role, giving it instead to Hayley Mills. Darlene shot herself in the foot. Don't blame Walt Disney. Later her vitriol turned to a bitterness where she felt she was unfairly passed up and was owed more success. It didn't help that a swindler came along and talked her into fraudulent schemes which landed them both in jail. When I get a nostalgic bent and go back to the original Mousketeers and see Darlene singing, "When I Grow Up Someday," I feel so sad for her.
Truly during her MMC years, Darlene was a standout performer. Energetic and a mult-talent. It's sad, (for whatever the reasons) her career pretty much tanked after Disney. 🤕😞
What a pity that Walt Disney never allowed any black kids to be Mouseketeers, so that they too could feel "as welcome as can be". What a good and deep and profound change that might have had on the world, how mournful that such an opportunity was lost.
The shows were all an hour long for the first two seasons. By the time the third season started the show was cut down to a half hour. And yes, these were daily.
Talented???? SMH. How many black girls or black boys were given an equal and unbiased chance for these auditions. Shameful and a disgrace that all these years later people are still ok with this.
Who agrees that Disney needs to release all the seasons of the original series on DVD?
SuperJackster01 yes a million times yes

This and the 90s version the 70s one can stay in the vault for eternity
I do. I would definitely would love to see the 70s series released as well.
@@tomgallowitz4464 I would love to see all three versions released.
Absolutely superb performance from both Bobby and Darlene.
Bobby was my first celebrity crush. I LOVE watching him dance. Aand that smile. He He's So Cute.I Also watched him on Thehe Lawrence Welk show.
Bobby was so endearing! He was the perfect boy to find at Coney Island! Such a great dancer!
The perfect non-threatening boy eh?
justess martin I always thought Darlene and Bobby would be a good couple. They're also my two favorite mousketeers
Not mine Jackster01. Darlene was a egotistical bitch while Bobby is [ and still is ] a two faced hypocrite and fraud.

This was like a variety show for kids. Perhaps that is why I enjoyed it so much.

Annette and Darlene were clearly the two major girlie standouts. That is pretty clear. Then there was also Bobby, Tommy, and Lonnie.👍🎼💖🎶
@@lenhummel5614 Annette and Darlene had a rivalry between them. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Darlene was a lot more edgy.
Bobby Burgess....Imagine the behind the scenes stories he could tell. Walt Disney, Lawrence Welk, etc.
America was GREAT in those days of the 1950's !
So was Canada not today
I have been looking for this one. There was a nice version of Darlene signing Coney Island on one of their albums. Wow, what a voice she had.
I saw & heard her sing at D23 in 2015, & she still got it

Oh the innocence of this show and of the time! And sadly, how far removed we are from it all...

I completely forgot about this song until I saw it here
Darlene the most beautiful and the best ❤
Gosh I love that laugh she had! If only those days were still here

Darlene and Bobby sang this song down to perfection and it shows.

At around 5:00 the camera tilted to show a crooked image which predates the old BATMAN TV series when they have the criminals in their hideout .
Darlene is so pretty
October 1, 1956, as that was a Monday. October 4th was THURSDAY.
Barry I. Grauman thanks for clarifying. I’ve seen 2 different air dates for this episode online so i was confused for a while

Singing heads in any circumstance are always very creepy.
We need to take all the crap that's on tv right now and replace it with shows like this.
love this segment it was that was
I have read that Darlene's career never went anywhere because her manager-father was too demanding and hard to deal with.
All of the attention was lavished on Annette. Poor Darlene didn't stand a chance.
Darlene had the talent, Annette had the, well, you know...

Darlene doing her thing after that Corky and White Shadow gig.

disney was raking in the profits from royalties of those darnold duck hats.
All those kids were hugely talented. We have great talent today as well, but the moguls have taken their innocence away. 🤨
The kids back then we're more adorable to watch. Today's kids are just too unoriginal and too brainwashed by social media and society of crap
How are they tap dancing with no taps on their shoes????
Darlene oh Darlene 😘
What a wonderful girl !!!
Santiago de Chile
those duck boys were not singing that.
