  • This is a clip of East Harlem I shot on an express bus heading to the Bronx. The ride clip is from 109th street to 112th along 3rd avenue, then it turns on 112th to 2nd avenue where it goes up to 117th street.
    This was shot in 1988!

    Riding in a bus filming out the window. Was a good camera for the 80s.

    I was born there, two weeks before 1984, but raised in the Bronx. Didn't see Harlem until I was much older, but it gave me an appreciation of my heritage and the strength and resilience of not only Black culture, but New York as a major city. The 1980s were dark times, but out of darkness comes light.

    Ha ha...its true but its also true that every group to East Harlem has had its chance to be the new comer whether illegal or not (Italians, Black, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans etc). I wonder if this was very late 80's because some of those businesses are still there! Thanks for the video!

    Born and raised there in the 60's-80's, remember P.S. 102- nice memories , remember the 60's riots 3rd Ave was ripped out(stores etc), and the blackout of 1964 also the 77' blackout but there was looting then for that blackout, was surprised.

  • @Nyclassic2006
    @Nyclassic2006 16 років тому +2

    I'm also thinking this was early 90's maybe like 92, you can also date the footage by what people are wearing if any are visible (especially young ones). The cars are also an indicator but in a place like spanish harlem you have to remember that if it is 90 most people have a car at least 8 years to 10 years old. This would be especially true in the 80's when the disparity between lower incomes and higher was greater than now. In the 90's the neighborhood incomes increased.
