One thing that isn't mentioned, is that without the crowd you miss an element that can effect fighters. The pressure the moment of a crowd is what makes it different than just two guys in a gym. Also the lack of crowd allowed the fighters to hear there corners and even the announcers for advice. With the one fighter even crediting DC for the kick check advice which changed that fight.
Some people say Tony shouldn’t have accepted this fight... last time he did that VS Max Holloway, he lost his shot at Khabib and Poirier got the title shot. Maybe Dana would have done the same and give Conor or Gaethje a title shot vs Khabib!
Conor doesn't deserve another title shot yet I'll be completely disappointed if he gets one before Gaethje or Ferguson he should have to fight Ferguson at the very least before that happens
What fascinated me was Tony's incredible chin because never did I imagine that he would absorb lots of Justin's hard punches yet remain on his feet till the last round
I was truly surprised that he didn't even fall from Justin's many punches, who is arguably the hardest pure power hitter in 155 . Yet I've seen Tony genuinely rocked by lesser punchers. It's insane . I hope Tony fully heals up and takes his time and only takes advantageous fights from here on out. Fck the UFC, he deserves better.
Parental Advisory a champion isn’t a champion because of how many fights they win they become champions because know when to be humble and analyze themselves and try to improve the guy talks and acts like a cocky idiot and hasn’t improved in prob 5 years. I rather lose and become better which is what gaethje did then win and never improve
He said it to him after the third but tony didn't listen. Then he repeated it again in the 4th But you are right there was no conviction in the advice and I think that's a reflection on Tony's anility to take feedback
tntramzy12 ya the confusing thing is obviously Tony was getting pieces up on the feet, so why is his BJJ coach coming to him at the stool after the 3rd with that? It would’ve made sense if he was instructing him on how to get it to the ground in more than one sentence.
Trevor Wittman was giving Gaethje amazing advice in his corner, while Eddie Bravo was trying to convince Tony COVID-19 is a conspiracy in the other corner.
Reminded me of Ultimate Fighter Team Jaenjaecheck (spell?) vs Team Gadelha. JJ just screamed useless encouragement during the rounds ("you're doing it. More. Keep at it" blah blah blah) whereas Gadelha was giving concise useful instructions.
"Do you think there was a chance?" "No, not at all. Well possibly, it's hard to say but I doubt it, but you really never will know cause it's hard to say y'know? I don't know, what do you think?"
Lol he said "no, no I don't think so, well maybe, but I don't think so, but it's possible." In other words "it's 100% entirely possible if Tony would of ate elk and did DMT he could of won but that would of been preposterous, so Justin won."
The fight DEFINITELY would have been different with a crowd. Fighters literally FEED off of the crowd. Especially Justin. Justin fought the most technical fight of his entire career because there wasn't a crowd there to make him want to go to war and just stand toe to toe not blocking any shots, without a crowd Justin was able to clear his mind completely. Tony also would have possibly gotten a 2nd wind with the crowd cheering him on. This fight surely would have been different, possibly the same victor but it wouldn't have looked the same.
Tony's still the man. Gaethe had an excellent gameplan and I think Tony was off just slightly I'd love to see them run it back one day if it makes sense
FraserAllDay idk about that. Tony has a VERY offensive ground game. And he still shits on khabib on the feet. I don’t think this fight took away from the idea that tony could beat khabib, because khabib isn’t the striker that gaethe or tony is. Also, khabib can’t wrestle in the middle of the octagon, and tony rarely backs up
Yea he didn't give him any advice at all. Sad but true. Didn't tell him to pull guard. Tony is wild but not very smart on his feet. Eddie should've kept his mouth shut and told him to pull guard instead of being prideful
Look at gsp. Even when considered the goat he's always trying to learn and become better, his flaws become his biggest strengths. Tony just gets fed praise and compliments. He needs actual criticism if he wants to become the best.
@@Kopbsirgen yes they are the same cowards. Gsp was scared of Anderson Silva and khabib is scared of Ferguson. I can't believe you guys like these kind of coward fighters unbelievable 😂
Yeah it was scary! I also think though he was shaking his head at herb telling him "No more". Like tony's a monster but you can only take so much damage and that last punch was only a jab (still had a lot of power). How many more of those could he have taken to a broken orbital bone?
He's only human, he's gonna reach that point where the pain becomes too much to take. Broken orbital bone and who knows what else just getting punched over and over. Reminded me of MacDonald vs Lawler 2, when Rory just lays down after getting punched in his broken nose too many times.
Yea Jon Jones tweated out stop this shit like a minute before it got stopped. Sometimes being KO'd is actually less damaging than not getting KO'd bc he's just continuously getting concussive blows to the head over and over and he thought they weren't hurting him bc that's Tony, but you saw when his leg gave out it doesn't matter how tough you are man you gotta be smart. I've seen ppl get hit like that their leg gave out and 5 years later they are still walking with a limp.
I think another major factor was the timeline in regards to Tony's training. He set everything up to peak in April. The fight gets canceled and then he has to try and extend that peak out another month. Trying to hold on to that fitness is tough and you could tell that tough as he was, he wasn't 100% as far as conditioning is concerned.
I feel bad for Tony cause he's got more to lose. Then again his pride always wants to fight the elites of the division, every time his bout with Khabib gets cancelled. Khabib meanwhile rests. Then gets to fight whoever is available at that time. Let's just hope this fight between Justin pulls through.
One of the most legendary win streaks in the UFC and the most anticipated MMA fight of all time died in an empty arena in an armpit area in Jacksonville, Florida. I'm heartbroken for Tony. Perfectly encapsulates my love/hate relationship with combat sports.

That’s the problem with reading comments before watching the video, now I couldn’t ‘’unhear’’ him say words with ‘’just’’ in them and it drove me nuts 😂😂
Regardless of Tony preparing for a different fighter, he's fought fighters similar to Justin Gaethje and was supposedly experienced/dynamic enough to adjust. Fighters frequently adjust style and surprise their opponent - and Tony should have been prepared for this. As Joe said, Justin Gaethje typically fights the same way so this would have been known to Tony beforehand. Justin is a striker who goes toe-to-toe. This is not something that should have surprised Tony nor something that he shouldn't have been able to adjust to. Besides, Tony took this fight. He still had weeks to prepare and he simply came up short.

It definitely had an effect, but personally, I think Tony was in great condition. If he fought Justin in the same condition he were when he fought Pettis, Justin could have killed him. Remember, it was after the Pettis fight when all that shit about Agents and Chips in his legs happened. Granted, He was coming back from a catastrophic knee injury he sustained only 6 months prior. Anthony Pettis concussed him, badly. I just hope nothing serious comes out of this in the long run.
People are trophy chasers. Always sucking the dick of the champion. All these people talking mad shit about tony are the same ones who were making “Tony the type of guy” jokes before his loss to Justin
I think the bigger issue than what Tony prepared for were the two weight cuts. Tony will always play that off but anyone who has seen all his fights saw that his condition was very low. Even when he gets lit up he always pushes the pace. He didn't push the pace at all after round 1 in this one
My soul left my body when I found out about Tony losing. I'm not a big fan of him, but he should've been the main villain fighting Khabib. Now I feel bad for the guy, hope he returns stronger
Cant wait until eddie is back on the podcast and Joe grills him Joe - "Why did you tell Tony beautiful boxing at the end of round 3" Eddie - *LOOK INTO IT*
I watched it once, i cant bring myself to watch it again, my heart was breaking for 25 mins especially rd 4 and 5. 12 fight win streak and never got to fight khabib, didnt even need to accept this fight with justin, credit to Justin it was the perfect plan, however he will lose to khabib the same way Dustin and Conor did. I still think Ferguson is the toughest test for Khabib he's the only one that can catch Khabib on the ground, no one else can. Side note - Can someone tell Francis's corner men to carry an empty coffin on there shoulders during his walkout in advance plz.
@Average Mo Agreed and Justin doesn't just do stand up, he's also a very accomplished wrestler. If he can get Khabib to stand, then Khabib is going to sleep.
Counting Justin out at this point is dumb as fuck. Many knowledgeable people were saying even before that Justin could be Khabib's biggest nightmare but, because of his fighting style, could ultimately become one of those cases of a guy who could beat the champ but not beat the top guys to get to that spot. Justin could DEFINITELY beat Khabib. Especially now that he's actually being tactical about his striking. He has the wrestling ability to keep the fight standing and he is superior when it comes to both striking technique and knockout power. There are no reasonable arguments that can sustain the notion that Khabib will undoubtedly beat him.
I was wondering how an empty stadium would affect the fighters. Regardless tho, better or worse, it was a level playing field for both. The better man pulverized.
Anybody notice that the way they set up the commentator cameras of the new UFC, with Rogan, Jon, and DC in different screens looks like old school JRE?
I feel like the lack of a crowd allowed Justin to focus the way he did, he was on a different level, every punch went where he wanted when he wanted.Edit- Justin just talked about this point in joes new podcast so for those of you that argued against me you can go ahead and scckk it 😂
Even without the crowd his coach had to calm him down and tell him to stay focused. Who knows really. Overall it's just better with a live audience. Spectacle is meant to be performed in front of a crowd.
also i feel like if the crowd was there when justin hurt tony the crowd would have gone wild, and that might have gave justin a rush of adrenaline and he might have tried to finish the fight which wasn’t his game plan
I dont think he would have finished him, he got caught and dropped but hes got a hell of a chin as well and he recovers very quickly. Hes also dangerous with the hooks even when someone is trying to finsish him. So no i dont think it would have mattered but thats just me.
It was a great fight, justin was ON HIS GAME, but big love to Tony he's tougher than a dollar steak and I believe this loss will push him to come back better than ever, I'm a fan of the Boogie Man
His all american status basically garruntees HE dictates where the fight takes place, and since he wants to avoid the ground, they just wont go to the ground period. No one will take him down...no one apart from khabib maybe.
He WAS a wrestler as a kid, then when he found MMA he realized he has a good chin. And in the UFC, that chin has been his weapon. I did not like to watch Gaethje fighting in the UFC because of that, he was taking head shots and losing being a functional human in the future like dollar bills fly out of your hands at a strip club. But against Ferguson he looked leaner and like a smarter fighter. I hope he continues with that, I would love to see how New Gaethje will do. I do not want to see how old Gaethje will end up 10 or 20 years from now when all those head strikes creep up on him.
@@EspenX yeah he's actually learnt and improved so much after those two losses to poirier and alvarez. Tony deserves respect for taking on a killer like Justin. if you remember when he passed up a previous interim title with Dustin and the winner of that got khabib. He didn’t want to have that happen again, It’s the fight game.
Yup, that’s the main reason I don’t feel bad, his nuts got too big for his britches. Should have waited for the big fight, plus he had to cut weight twice in a month.
Jacob G yeah but he didn’t have to take this fight. Dana had him and Khabib set for later this year guaranteed. Tony didn’t feel like waiting and he assumed he would win and fight Khabib later anyways, and Justin would have fought Conor.
Joe, you forgot the most important reason Tony almost killed himself. Doing a double weight cut is insane and only a person like Tony will do such a thing. You can ask any fighter in wrestling, boxing and UFC and they will tell you they would never do such a thing. I will like to see a rematch with both fighters having a complete camp and preparation for each other.
Its not like he got down to weight two times, the original date was moved well before the fight and the serious weight cutting and water depletion never took place

Same. I tried a couple times and had to shut it off in the 1st round. Justin was amazing.
Azad Alam Justin a high level wrestler. To say he’ll be dealt with by khabib like khabib did Dustin and conor, is stupid

He WAS a wrestler as a kid, then when he found MMA he realized he has a good chin. And in the UFC, that chin has been his weapon. Tony shouldnt have took the fight, props to him for doing so. Heartbroken tony khabib wont ever happen now
Do you see that this is obvious set up? Gaethje has same manager as Khabib's. It's all about saving his as from Tony. Is he that scary, could you just fight?
Павел Коровин shut up you idiot there was no set up, all the blame lies with Tony for not waiting a few extra months, he agreed to the fight no one forced him into it
@@taylor099c8 other than money and publicity. Tony still made 380k tonight though
It will happen! It’s too big a draw for it not to. Dana knows that’s a big fight and knows the ufc will make loads of money
@@taylor099c8 I'm not arguing with you on this one, m8. He should not have agreed on kebab's manager's set up fight. But it doesn't mean there is no set up.
I don't mean that fight was a work or fake, no, i mean that this was planned: there are such thing as uncomfortable opponent. Kebab was one for Konor, it just doesn't work, Gaethje is uncomfortable for Tony as fighter in stance who doesn't like to go down with graplings.
It can be counted through.
The empty arena made the fight even more intense. No crowd, no bullshit, just blood, willpower and the sound of punches landing.
The way Joe touches that mic is so muscle memory.
“Hold on I’m talking mother” - Kevin lee to Michael Chiesa’s mom
Old but fucking gold.
b a n j o I don’t get it
Eddie won’t be on the podcast until this has all blown over, my guy is a meme right now.
He's always been a meme lmao
WOW you a a fucking scumbag
Stfu tony had a choicehe chose to fight gaethje he coulda sit out. He chose to fight gaethje-a striker. All that i prepared for a grappeler shit is just bs
Eddie is 1/2 impressive and 1/2 ridiculous AF. His conspiracy theories and ignorance in some areas are sad. No surprise that after all the bravado and bad decision making that Tony lost.
He's on the podcast this weekend with brenda.
The funniest thing was Joe using the microphone as if he was talking to the whole stadium 😂😂
I think the fact that there was no crowd was great for Justin. I think he gets into it a bit more when the crowd is roaring and now he also could hear his corner guide him all the time.
Tony's corner, particularly Eddie, are like yes men

Prime example of the consequences of surrounding yourself with yes men.
Tony's fault for even taking this fight. He could have just waited for Khabib no matter what.
@Dill Pickle Khabib didn't rob anyone you numpty head. There's a reason he isn't being stripped of his belt. Because when the Russian govt, you know the guys who made the fucking kgb, tells you not to leave the borders, you don't leave the fucking borders unless you want some real bad shit coming your way.
John Doe LOL!
I like how Tony ran and span around to avoid more damage when Justin reeled him hard.😅😅😅
Joe, you forgot the most important reason Tony almost killed himself. Doing a double weight cut is insane and only a person like Tony will do such a thing. You can ask any fighter in wrestling, boxing and UFC and they will tell you they would never do such a thing. I will like to see a rematch with both fighters having a complete camp and preparation for each other.
he should have just waited for the khabib fight
Its not like he got down to weight two times, the original date was moved well before the fight and the serious weight cutting and water depletion never took place
Most wrestlers who are wrestling cut weight every wk it’s not that crazy of a thing especially if you are use to cutting weight and have it down to where not to hard to do
fabrizzio monsalve id cut at least ten pounds every wk and when you weigh 120 that’s a lot and I knew wrestlers who did more I’m guessing you didn’t wrestle
