  • One day in Bochum! 🇩🇪
Bochum is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia. With a population of 372,348 (April 2023), it is the sixth largest city (after Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Essen and Duisburg) of the most populous German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the 16th largest city of Germany. On the Ruhr Heights (Ruhrhöhen) hill chain, between the rivers Ruhr to the south and Emscher to the north (tributaries of the Rhine), it is the second largest city of Westphalia after Dortmund, and the fourth largest city of the Ruhr after Dortmund, Essen and Duisburg. It lies at the centre of the Ruhr, Germany's largest urban area, in the Rhine-Ruhr Metropolitan Region, and belongs to the region of Arnsberg. Bochum is the sixth largest and one of the southernmost cities in the Low German dialect area. There are nine institutions of higher education in the city, most notably the Ruhr University Bochum (Ruhr-Universität Bochum), one of the ten largest universities in Germany, and the Bochum University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule Bochum).
What to see in one day in Bochum?
•The Bochum town hall is one of the most important representative buildings in the Ruhr area.
•The cowherd monument was built in 1908 in Bochum on what was then the market. It is intended to remind us of the tranquil times of Bochum as a small country town. The construction can be seen as a reaction to the revolutionary events of the previous decades in the city. In general, the cowherd “Fritz Kortebusch”, actually Diederich Henrich Kortebusch, is associated with the monument.
•The Bochum Planetarium is one of the most visited star theaters in Europe. It is located near the Ruhr Stadium on the northeastern edge of downtown Bochum in the Ruhr area. The planetarium was built in 1964 as the first large German planetarium of the post-war period. It is now a listed building.
•The Bismarck Tower in Bochum is a Bismarck tower and observation tower in the Bochum city park that was inaugurated in 1910. Like all Bismarck towers, it is dedicated to the Imperial Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, who was nationally revered as the architect of the founding of the Empire in 1871.
•The RuhrCongress Bochum is a congress and event center in the Grumme district of Bochum. It replaced the Ruhrlandhalle. The RuhrCongress Bochum has been in operation since 2003 under the management of Bochumer Veranstaltungs-GmbH (BoVG). On average, around 200 events of various kinds take place here every year, from concerts and comedy to trade fairs and larger (specialist) congresses.
•The German Mining Museum in Bochum (German: Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum) or DBM is one of the most visited museums in Germany with around 365,700 visitors per year (2012). It is the largest mining museum in the world, and a renowned research establishment for mining history.
