- John came by this week to give a clinic and spend time with a select group of Berklee's most talented songwriters.
He kindly took the time to set up in an ensemble room and, after having a huge crowd build up outside, let us all in and treated us to Gravity, finishing with the whole room singing I've Got Dreams to Remember.
He was joined by Tomo Fujita, an assistant professor at Berklee who instructed John Mayer while he was at Berklee. Tomo is an amazing guitar player; check his UA-cam channel out here:

One of the songwriters that John was able to write and play with was my good friend Ali Rapetti:

Good post! Plus one! Nice to prepare all you can... having a strong foundation will help you improve more and more...
Tomo
There will never be enough of John Mayer’s Gravity to hold me down. I love it. I love him
Taking Tomo Fujita as my private instructor next semester. This video convinced me
John Mayer, Tomo Fujita and Michael Lemmo all under the same roof.
fender hot rod deluxe's
they have those amps in almost ever practice room.
I got a 2.7 and got in. You have to show that you are a serious musician who can really pull through anything to make it in the music industry, I'm at a 3.8 at Berklee and it's just amazing!
Love this video so much. This is how music is supposed to be.
Sooo cool! I was just accepted for the fall 2010 semester and I'm sooo excited that I can hardly stand it! :)
So how did it go?
@@DrMuizz ^
@@DrMuizz she ded she ded
@@DrMuizz ye im interested too lmao
you can tell everyone there is a musician .... there not yelling over the music ... so hard to come by vids on youtube without that
This is the sweetest thing I've heard today
To the guy who put this vid up: Please don't listen to people giving you flak about your singing!
You're doing a huge favor to each and every one of us by recording this stuff and then putting it where we can get to it. I'd like to let you know that even if no one else does, I really appreciate this a whole lot, and I think you're awesome.
Acknowledging this 14 years later - which is crazy - but I just read this ... and thank you. Me back then actually really needed that
with a room filled with musicians, breaking out in song sounds great.
berklee must be so awesome. esp the music school, everyone's so talented and blessed with opportunities like this. plus everyone can sing :)
I cant wait to go here for songwriting/performance this fall! So stoked!
How was it
i'm going to Berklee!!! word to the audition part. my reading is week...i read music for the first time in years like 3 weeks before my audition. great experience though, the professors in the room were super nice and the whole thing was stress free =] CANT WAIT
@LIGHTRONIX 12 singer/songwriters were chosen to spend the week in and out of the studio with John back in 2008. This video was taken when everyone in the hall was let in haha. My sister is in the front row... I can actually pick out her voice lol.
Wow, this would be the coolest thing ever to be a part of
I got to see them both in the same day... Muahhaha. Hard Rock Calling baby.
wow this amazing!
affirmative action. oh and rock on john mayer!!!
i just saw of few different recordings of this video from different perspectives, and by this video, i know who did which one!!!
I was there yeahh!!
if no one knows, the guy next to john mayer is Tomo, his instructor and JM gave Tomo a his own signature guitar.
i was right outside, and i left right before... bummer, but he did comment on my John Mayer signature guitar on his way out. "I see you sprung for the signature model"
haha, good times... oh berklee...
You know you're in a music college when people start humming counter melodies to your song.
gadem... that's the sweetest tamest strat sound i've ever heard....
WHAT! i go to boston university and i cant bleive he was at berklee!
you can get in with weak reading... you get arating that places you in the coresponding course levels in soloing/ chord comping/ and sight reading
i have one, too! good amp good price!
Of course, you're all Berklee students so you sing in harmony. Haha what I wouldn't give to study at Berklee. Cheers!
dude thats awesome!did he say anything or give any advice?
thats cool how you got in to see him, the room must have been packed!
@thedrumbum plus he's performing at a music school
Peep Michael Lemmo at 0:02
Good catch!
Very good catch!
The man himself
He's so good! Why the hell isn't he ever in england.
John Mayer is amazing and he's my hero. I can't wait to graduate and go to apply to berkley (:..I'm only sixteen now, and I play guitar...Getting my strat next month :D
RawMilk902 did you end up going ?
4reely Fr
Haha I just saw this comment
dude,
i love it, i just jammed over this.
And, i met him in the lobby right after this...
you have to be able to play from sheet with i think 15 minutes of time to study it.
@tjolmsy
i went there. and then i left.
its not the only good school out there. dont get too set on it. its not for everyone. and just like every other school, has its ups and downs.
youll be learning the same stuff no matter where you go.
OMFGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG i hes awsome
@sideburnsbob you sound intelligent. wish i my language skills were as proficient as yours. i guess thats whats music is for, great for those who can't express well enough through spoken words
there's a sightreading aspect to the audition process
@thedrumbum i never would expect that at berklee... :P
i love that "little wing type" of sus4 embellishment he does on the G
What pedal is he using there?
Well I myself think it's ridiculous that they let ignorant people such as yourself, Whatisthescore, make comments about somebody as accomplished as Mr. Mayer. But such is the free world.
His dropping out after 2 semesters has nothing to do with it. They brought him in on the simple fact that he's such a brilliant songwriter. Not only that, but he can teach what he does. Very few people can do that, you either do it or teach it.
jm did?
is he playing over a fender hot rod deluxe?
Just got here from instagram
Is the dude video taping this dying or something at the end because i here these weird grasping for air sound
@letspretendxc0re hehe reading all these posts and listening to this song is kind of inspiring
@nyktophylaxia it's not what you play, it's how you play it.
omg who's behind the camera
lol...
what city is this in?
@sideburnsbob LOL!
hey kuchenburg its ameya what up
lmao hello to you to :D
yo is that marty walsh???!! he said he didnt even like johns voice!
So I am confused a bit here. Are the people here singers? guitarists? or all they all songwriters?
haha me too
yo id appreciate if u check out my berklee audition video, i need feedback before i do it!
lol i wanna say hello to youtube :P
and me haha
Also, you don't HAVE to take those general education courses...
not to forgt hes playing with tomo fujita ... who for some reason hasnt been mentioned -.-
wow..you hit up all these vids didn't you? lol
@Whatisthescore very original.. *sarcasm*
School Doesn't get much more liberal than this. lol. jk. This is really cool, i would give anything for JM to come to my school.
reading scores would be probably the only reason for which he wouldn't get in.
yeah, sounds like Whatisthescore is a little insecure about him/herself. im sensing a little jealousy there.
mad you got rejected?
dont take it out on good musicians.
agreed, his harmonies are not good
