I think its pretty clear tht the bird is not picking away ticks, if u notice, its picking at the same spot over and over, its picking away at a wound in the ear.
A lot of cleaner species, whether is be birds or fish will obviously clean ticks and parasites, but they will also create wounds to drink blood. There's a really interesting research paper on cleaner fish (blinies I believe) and the frequency of this behaviour when with fish that would and wouldn't allow it.
HisSpeedBullet posted this: "Oxpeckers will sit on certain mammals and target the ticks and other small parasites found on the skin and in the coats of these animals. Oxpeckers’ bills are especially adapted to their lifestyle. The bills are pointed as well as laterally compressed which helps the birds work their way through the coats of the mammals in a comb-like fashion and to pry out well embedded parasites. The birds are also known to help clean-up open wounds. What they are after around the open sore is the rotting wound tissue. Oxpeckers are quite efficient at cleaning these lesions." Not sure how accurate but I dont see why not, the birds wouldn't want to intentionally hurt the animals since they'd be getting free, easily acquired food from them on a regular basis anyway.
I'm sure most people know but in case you don't these birds will also peck until they cause a bleeding wound upon which they will feed. So they are not wholly symbiotic.
They also drink blood and can cause more harm then the ticks they eat. This one was repeatedly going for the same spot. It may be going after the blood directly.
It has to be sipping blood from and open cut. I’ve seen crows pick ticks off of cows faster than that and the crows didn’t peck at the same spot continuously. So it has to be taken blood.
@@crypastesomemore8348 "but it is of no benefit to the host. By the time an oxpecker eats a fully engorged female blue tick, it has already bitten the host, passed on any diseases it is carrying, drained all the blood it is going to take"
@Richard Vaughn Very cool, man, you are really knowledgeable, are you a biologist or naturalist? Usually I know this kind of stuff, but not very familiar with this bird, obviously.
@Richard Vaughn There are yellow-beaked Oxpeckers and red-beaked ones. The beak color might be natural. But otherwise you are indeed correct. Those birds are vampires, in a way.
Most probably the bird's not eating ticks but rather drinking blood from an open wound, as it's keep going for the same spot again and again. 2:15 it just looks like vampire
These birds specialise in picking insects like ticks and fleas off animals like antelope and buffalo. Not sure how they originally figured it out though : D
Oxpeckers don't only eat ticks and other pests. They are more than happy to nip pieces of skin and flesh off too for a quick snack. Hitting the same spot over and over like that isn't the bird working on a tick... its the bird pecking at an open wound.
It is actualy more closer parasitism unfortunately. What ever the Oxpecker does, it is not to the benefit of the Impala. Most likely it is in fact damaging. If it does peck away some ticks, it is more a happy coincidence, but they are mostly after animal blood (wich they do get over the ticks, if they are bloated already, but they often create their own source by pecking open a wound)
Makes me think they should make some sort of super hero team or super villain duo that has this sort of relationship that ties into their super powers...
If you’ve ever had someone rip off a bandaid; imagine it’s a tick and has pinched its claws into you and then someone else comes along and rips it out with their teeth?

I`m here after being out to lunch.
Yo chizzy me bro
🙋🏻♀️
Yup. Reminded me to bush hog my paddock to keep the ticks down.

Yeah, Oxpeckers are actually assholes. Though to be fair, I do not know if this applies to all species.
A lot of cleaner species, whether is be birds or fish will obviously clean ticks and parasites, but they will also create wounds to drink blood. There's a really interesting research paper on cleaner fish (blinies I believe) and the frequency of this behaviour when with fish that would and wouldn't allow it.
If there are no ticks, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. The deer probably lets it because it can't tell whether or not there is a tick.

What fantastic camerawork - Insane clarity.

There are still a lot of people who are unaware about the Oxpecker's true nature.
They are vampires.

He’s picking away at the dead tissue around the wound, not the blood

@Tritiuminducedfusion nothing, its in reference to ticks.
This is very relaxing to watch.
It is also disturbing. Ox peckers are vampires and will not quit.

Bird: Hold still, your earwax is almost gone. 🐦

lol yup.
These birds look like Buphagus africanus and Buphagus erythrorhynchus (are hematophagous bird species).
What's it pecking on the same spot that seems plentiful that we can't see ?...
Ticks, Mites, Lice and Fleas
They open up wounds to drink blood, apparently when there are not enough ticks. So I'm guessing that's what's going..

Great work by this fella. Very patient and helpful with his client. Impala better have slid him a $20.
Those oxpeckers do a mighty fine job cleaning thicks off!
Incredible footage
relaxing and enjoying scratching.

yeah, it's relieving the Impala, which can't scratch or pick at an annoyingly itchy wound, the impala only flinches when the bird hits a painful spot.

There are a lot of small ticks at the edge of this impala's ear
That is a very good jab Oxpecker.
Omg nice captured 👌👌👌
This one ear must be a gold mine of ticks.
Are these birds can see what they eating?
Oxpecker is like an ENT specialist who will not leave one patient till he gets another.
Naw its a bloodsucking bird 😂
Is the bird annoying the young impala or is it grooming it ?
Let's say both😆
bird is helping impala, cause It eats parasites on Impala's head.
And Impala is letting the bird to have nice meal!
Nature has such a balance
How did birds find out that other animals had bugs on them?
These birds specialise in picking insects like ticks and fleas off animals like antelope and buffalo. Not sure how they originally figured it out though : D
The balance that GOD has created in nature is so amazing!
Bird as hair dresser: please do not move or else you will be troubled. Deer as customer: never mind.

Hey Doc how does that ear look?
Well, I cleaned as much as i could but you really need to take care of personal hygiene.

Good job!!!👍
Omg I clean my ears every day. Crows are the best. It's not like they have cotton swabs and fingers to clean thier own ears.

Its drinking blood from the open wound it has created.

Why is it so relaxing to watch Ox peckers annoy the hell out these animals 🤔 ?
The feeling is just like Stirling your ears with feathers .
Can You Hear Me Now?
I had a Chevy Impala years back and the birds never cleaned that. Quite the opposite really.

Those red eyes tho...
It’s because they drink blood from ear
Its eating parasites and fleas so it's kind of like an doctor in a way....or is he?
Those birds keep the wounds open to attract more parasites. They aren't really good doctors...
They also feed on the animals blood so their not just feeding on parasites their actually a parasite themselves just like the ticks they eat are.
