    Buds start opening on my PawPaw. Can I still use it as scion for grafting in the end of March? I don’t think scions will survive till May. Thanks

      They're basically grafting a branch from one variety of pawpaw onto the roots of a less-desirable variety, so that they can get the fruit of the desired variety.

    I'm confused. What kind of tree are you grafting onto the paw-paw? Another variety of paw-paw?

    • @treelife365
      @treelife365 5 років тому

      I believe that is the case, though she didn't mention it...

    • @avcrawford

      She grafted KSU-Atwood, which is a cultivar of pawpaw developed at Kentucky State University, onto pawpaw rootstock of a different variety. The purpose is to get the fruit of the KSU-Atwood.

      @@stevengonzalez27 The tree she grafted onto is a seedling. Seedlings are always new genetic mixtures of their parents (the tree the seed came from and the tree that pollinated the flower on that tree), so every seedling is genetically unique and different, and the fruit quality (and other traits) will vary between seedlings even when grown from fruit off the same tree. All this is true of fruit and nut trees generally, not just pawpaws. With a seedling tree you won't really know how good the fruit is until the tree gets big enough and starts fruiting. But the variety the woman is grafting in this photo was selected as one of the very best of a large number of seedlings that were grown up, and then it was named, and then pieces of that tree are joined to other seedlings like in this video to get more of the same fruit. This has been done for millennia. Grafting is even mentioned in the Bible.

      @@stevengonzalez27 The fruit and tree characteristics of the seedling are unknown since they are not guaranteed to grow true from seed, so they used it as a rootstock for the variety Atwood, KSU's first release, which has been thoroughly evaluated over the years. There are no GMO pawpaw varieties to my knowledge. Researchers must plant thousands of seeds and then evaluate each one over many years once they begin bearing fruit at around 7 years old.

    Where can I buy these Atwoods? How do they compare to Shenandoah, Allegheny, Wells, etc ? It seems that the ones that carry it have them always back ordered.

  • @MoonwiseHerbswildforaging

    Was the budwood that you were grafting dormant?

    • @treelife365
      @treelife365 5 років тому +1

      Yes, she mentioned that the budwood was collected in February, after the tree was allowed to go through a cold period, and was kept in the refrigerator (with the wound dipped in parrafin) until the time of grafting.

    I know it's not, but I feel like it's some sort of murder when you use a tree just for its roots... like grafting your head onto someone's body or something...
