V.V.'s statement that "the woman has always lead the man astray" is a reference to Adam and Eve.
And I think the collective unconscious accepted Lelouch's wish because as he said, "it's a request". He wasn't commanding and forcing his will on everyone like Charles.

  • @matthewedgerton5761

So: The exact mechanics of Charles & Marianne's plan & goal are poorly explained IMO so i thought id try to lay it out in a more understandable way (as i understand it):
First - What the Collective Unconscious actually is: The collective unconscious is the idea that all human beings are part of one giant being, with each individual person's soul being a fragment split off from this larger entity. This larger entity, sometimes called "God", is effectively a hive mind made up from all of humanity, past, present and future. Again, an individual human is a fragment temporarily split off from this larger being acting on its own for a while, before eventually rejoining it after death. The collective unconscious is still very much an unknown in Code Geass, but it is the source of the power of Geass, which is also why Lelouches power, while not able to control God, at least could influence it enough to take action to stop Charles & Marianne's plan.
Second - What Charles & Marianne wanted to achieve: Charles & Marianne blame "lies, deception & masks" as the root of all human evil & suffering. Therefore, their goal is to permanantly destroy the divisions between humans and the collective unconscious, effectively turning all of humanity into one giant hive-mind forever. In their new world - Charles feelings are Nunally's feelings are Lelouches feelings etc, the same for thoughts, emotions, memories and experiences. Even the souls of the dead become part of that new hive mind. The idea here is simple: If everyone is part of the same being we can all understand each other implicitly, and therefore no-one would ever fight, lie or cheat again. Lies & masks itself would become a moot point, because everyone knows everything and knows what your really like/really think underneath it all.
Third - Why Lelouche rejected them: Lelouche's lays out a variety of points for why he refuses, from personal grudge ("you abandoned us!") to grand philosophy ("you want a world without change, how stagnant!") which i could unpack but, ultimately, the real beef he's got is what he lays out at the end: Nunally's kind nature, appreciation for the world and the fact that kindness itself becomes meaningless in this "new world". The idea being that if people all start being nice to each other because they literally feel each others suffering and pain and it hurts them just as much as others then that's not really "kindness" its just self interest. True kindness is that displayed towards someone when you DON'T explicitly benefit from it. "The 'gentler world' that Nunally wanted is one where kindness is shown to everyone - *even strangers*". He is deeply offended by the idea of a world where kindness (like that displayed by his beloved sister) loses its meaning.
Ultimately you can boil it down to this: Lelouche, despite all of the horrible things that happen in Code Geass, wholeheartedly believes in the goodness of humanity and its potential to move forward to a better tomorrow. Charles does not, AT ALL. Charles believes cycles of violence and hate are the inevitable lot of humanity, while Lelouche believes that people, when given the chance, CAN make a change for the better. So that's what Lelouche means when he says "Don't stop the march of time!". Let humanity have a chance to move forward and make a better tomorrow, without trapping us in some pseduo-spiritual hive-mind limbo for all eternity.
    Extras -
"You will inherit Schneizel's world!" - If they stop Charles & Marianne here, then there's nothing left to stop Schneizel from enacting his own plans for a new world order (unless our intrepid heroes could put a stop to it? FIND OUT NEXT TIME!)
"I will not let you call that a lie! Over my dead body!" - This is my favourite line from Lelouche in possibly this whole show, particularly due to delivery (Johnny Young Bosch f***ing kills it here). Charles is implying that the only reason Nunally ever smiled or was sweet to people was as an act to try and manipulate people into helping her out since she was crippled ("your labouring under a delusion"). Lelouche is UTTERLY F***ING INCENSED by this implication that that's what Nunally's actually like underneath, and just states outright that he'd literally rather die than let such a cynical remark stand.
Sorry for the tirade but i really love this episode and scene but it took me like 4-5 watches of Code Geass over the years to fully put together what was going on so i thought id share it and maybe help people appreciate it a little easier.

@@anthonydarcsen767 If you managed to get all of that, on your first watch, without coming into it already having an idea about what the Collective Unconscious is and how it works (so basically not having seen Evangelion) then i tip my hat, but i've watched this show with about 30 different people now over the years and i guarantee you that that's not standard.
That said: I agree that it would really ruin the mood/kill the pacing if they explained all of this in this scene. Id ideally instead prefer a little more set-up/explanation in the lead-up but i don't think its that big of a deal overall, because even if you don't understand the literal mechanics of whats going on the emotional through line is plenty clear (sorta like with the Fate franchise).

One word: Refrain. Everyone out here talking about the "no lies" part of Charles' plan. I think people also forget to mention that unlocking the collective unconscious, which means allowing all minds to be intimately linked to each other, was also supposed to bring back the dead. Those who passed from the mortal world and rejoined "God" could be brought back as their individual selves. This is why Lelouch asks not to stop the march of time.
In a world where the dead do no stay dead, people will always look back to the times that were better. Code Geass explored the thematic elements of this way back in the first season with the drug refrain. The drug allowed people to relive their best moments, ignoring reality. Charles and Marianne's willingness to "watch from afar" is no different.
That's what I love about Code Geass, just like "Knight of Zero," everything seems to slot into its place by the end of the show. Finishing Code Geass is like completing a puzzle for the first time. Except, the image is so confusing you redo it just to make sure you actually got it right.

The red writings during the vision, "Abandon all hope ye who enter here", and Lelouch phrase at 14:41, "I understand now that what you did to Nunnally and me may have been done out of good intentions", puts the nail in the coffin.
The path to hell is paved with good intentions, meaning that the world where the human subconscious is free would be a hellish place just like the human mind can be.

I believe Schneizel's world means the way that Schneizel, despite any moral objections, is obedient to the laws and order of the Empire. Because not to follow the law would bring everything crashing down.
Notice that he never decided to act against his father until he was positive that Charles was acting against the good of the Empire.
In Game of Thrones terms, Schneizel is like those great heroes of the old Kingsguard who despite their high morals and honorable souls followed the psychotic Mad King's orders until the end because:

An important point here is that Lelouch did not use Geass on the collective unconscious (C.U.) - just as Charles said, that is impossible. Lelouch’s Geass needs eye contact and the C.U. does not have eyes. Every time Lelouch uses his Geass we see the symbol fly from his eye and rewire the target’s brain. That did not occur here; as Lelouch himself stated, what he was making was a request of the C.U., not a command. The giant Geass symbol that appeared over the C.U. is better interpreted as a reflection of what Geass really is, which is referenced in the last episode: a wish. Lelouch’s experiences among people taught him to understand something that neither Charles nor Schneizel could see from their commanding heights: that the wish and the everlasting will of mankind is to struggle on towards the future. Despite all the cruelty and deception of the world, mankind always wills to make a better tomorrow. The manifestation of Geass in his other eye is showing how Lelouch was now fully in tune with the will of the C.U. From this, it is reasonable to assume that the power of Geass is how the C.U. acts in and influences the world. This is why I believe that Lelouch ordering Euphemia to slaughter those people was not an accident or mere coincidence, it was the will the C.U. manifesting in Geass in order to keep Lelouch’s dream of a better future alive, because it saw that he was about to be defeated and settle for a suboptimal solution. We know that Geass can take over someone who cannot control its power, but instead of being overtaken, Lelouch was the first user to be in total harmony with the fully manifested power so he was not overtaken by it. The world Charles wanted was what the Japanese feared the special zone would have been, since it was a consolation prize that would have prevented them from struggling for true freedom and independence in the future: an inert, stagnant world of dreams where nothing of consequence ever happens, for people can hide nothing from each other. Geass, and Lelouch as its true bearer, represents pure ambition and the deceit necessary in order to achieve anything. The sweet smile Nunally showed was indeed a mask over her feelings, but that mask, what she chose to show to others, was more real in Lelouch’s heart than whatever sadness was underneath that she could not control, which is why he said that he would not allow Charles to call it a lie. The mask of Zero fits this well too. Without the mask of Zero, Lelouch never could have achieved his ambitions, despite his initial confidence to the contrary. In the end, Zero became more real than Lelouch himself, which is why Suzaku assumes its identity, and why Lelouch could stain and discard his personal identity, the abandoned prince of Britannia that he once was. He had another mask, another covert identity: Lelouch Lamperouge, the student who lived a normal life with his friends. With his two “false” identities being more real and precious to him than his “real” one, it is no wonder that Lelouch chose the world of lies. This also gives more perspective to his confrontation with Suzuku, who realized that Lelouch was wearing a mask, so he told him to keep it on till the very end. This fits in nicely with Rolo as well, who chose the mask Lelouch had worn around him as the truth, and so Lelouch put it back on as Rolo died, affirming that he was wearing it. As a person dons different masks as identities, the C.U also dons different masks as people. This is what Lelouch chose to protect when he defied his father and his dream. This was a brilliant scene that binds the entire show together in one powerful message, that the masks we put on around each other are more real than the faces underneath.

To explain the "Killing God" part resulting in the end of time, just think of how it's possible to forcefully make a world without lies. Either everyone loses free will, everyone dies, or everyone is stopped from ever doing anything again, because there will always be liars given the opportunity. In order to forcefully create a world without lies, he must do one of these things. In this case, it turns out that the method Charles plan used to stop lies permanently would have been "no opportunity" meaning time never moving forward.

  • @khaii13
    @khaii13 4 роки тому +16

"God" here is the collective unconscious, or to put it in other words: the collective will of humanity which is accessed by humans through the Akashic Records (Jungian terminology). which is kinda fitting that the weapon a human (Charles) is using to kill God here is the sword of Akasha meaning a collection of human consciousness within the C's world who would agree to build a tower to reach out to heaven to slay God (like the tower of Babel, in Biblical literature, which coincidentally was the tower where Lelouch regained his memory in R2-Ep1).
Also, the act of slaying God here would be pretty much destroying or at least resetting the collective unconscious, meaning everyone's ego border would be destroyed. The most simplistic way to think about it is how all individual human consciousness would be linked in a larger consciousness, almost like a hive mind, like a global telepathic link. you can think of it like social media but like a million times more personal as even your own thoughts and motivations are revealed to everyone and everyone is revealed in the same way to you. In that sense, lies become a useless implement since there simply will be no need to it. In all ancient mythology and religion, this is usually preceded by humans uniting under a single identity as humans; then a final climactic battle between light and darkness; before those who have ascended enough are bodily taken to a paradisal state where all consciousness is linked and are in the face of God. This is why Charle's even used the word "Ragnarok", for his plan: the last great war of the Aesir Gods of the Norse at the end of time before the cycle resets. Except for one critical difference: this is an artificially accelerated "evolution" of the consciousness, one that, in the narrative and thematic sense of the show, the people of that world is yet unready or rather are not mature enough to obtain. Going back to the Bible (only because it is one of the religions that i know best, though i have read up on Kabbalah, a bit on the cycle of reincarnation and how even the Gods follow this cycle in Buddhism and Shinto, and the unity with the singular consciousness of the Brahman in indian religions) The tower of Babel reached out to heaven, just like the sword of Akasha reached out to Jupiter (Roman Equivalent of Zeuss, the top God in that mythology); but humanity was not ready for it and God determined that if they reach high enough "they will be like us" (direct quote from the Bible, in Genesis), thus they destroyed the tower and divided humanity apart, same here where the Sword of Akasha fell when the collective will of humanity heeded Lelouch's request. Thus the flow of time, meaning how the world unfolds itself and the individual human experience and the human condition in that world will go on as is. Meaning further, that, when Lelouch Rejected his father's plan, it meant that the world will continue to be in its war torn state; whereas, theoretically, if Charles was successful and the mask of every individual persona were to have been successfully wiped from the collective unconscious, one could theoretically argue that that would just render wars or any form of conflict useless; or any ambition to excel for that matter since you pretty much know for sure where you stand in the pecking order through the hive mind like connection (again this is just a simplistic explanation, anyone smarter than me just dont attack me on this please).
Oh and funny side-note just for the sake of thoroughness: Lelouch in fact did not win that verbal argument with his parents based on logical merit. instead of tackling the issue at hand as to the actual viability of the plan; he went for the good ol' Ad hominem fallacy where what he turned the audience's focus on was on the character of the people trying to execute said plan, discrediting them, thus discrediting the plan.

Man, I wished I could organize my thoughts like that and put them to words. But I can't write to sentence without confusing myself and my poor english doesn't help either

@@jeffpage1000 thanks. Also not a native English speaker. And I know what you mean. It takes me a long time to arrange my thoughts and after that arrange my words and sentences into something like this post. Would love to see you articulate your thoughts as well. Having civilized conversation with people who (presumably) are passionate about this story/anime as well.

Good comment, but I reject the last part. This was not an argument of reason, so there were no fallacies. It was a battle of ideals. When two people are dialectically opposed in their ideals, no amount of reasoning can ever resolve the dispute. It must come down to war and domination of one over the other.

    Loved this episode and reaction!!
Also, his Dad did say family were killing family and backstabbing them just to gain ranks, so I assume that's why it worked like that, since he's a prince and all.

We can't explain Lelouch's motives and his goals without spoils, But a you can take a few minutes and write down lulu's goals as you know them, then write down his personality traits, after that simply think about the progression of the show and try to map out the all the different possibility's and choose the path that would be most likely to get to that goal and you should have a general idea of what lulu's goal is. ( Think of it kinda like the paths in Detroit: Become Human.)

To clarify the collective consciousness is a old philosophical belief where thoughts can all be shared and the physical world separates it. To save time imagine a world were you completely can read everyones thoughts so it's impossible to lie, even those who died. More similar it's like as if those thoughts are also your own since you are all the same mind. Sounds a little weird but it basically makes everyone immortal since we all reside in everyone's mind, dead or alive.

C's world is the collective unconsciousness, people go there when they die (CC said to mao wait for me in C's world when she killed him), destroying it stops the flow of time and resurrects the dead, a world without conflict is a stagnant world, that is what the emperor wants.
For the emperor, all the pains in this world are caused by lies, and everyone lies and wears a mask, that is how they learned to live, and the best country at that is Britania, that is why they are at the top of this world
But how do you stop something that is motivated by life? people's lives and ambitions are motivated by death, their own and their loved ones', it is what makes them restless, if no one can die people can finally settle and enjoy life without needing masks.
That is also why he doesn't care about politics and wars, not even his kingdom, i'd even go as far as saying he hates Britania, go rewatch his speech during Clovis' funeral from the earlier episodes, it takes on a very different meaning : he isn't spewing an ideology, he's stating facts, condemning and mocking the world and people with every word, he believes every word he says and hates the world for those very reasons, that is why you see him pissed as he talks.
The all hail britania just makes the irony even sweeter.

    3 Minds in this Anime
Emperor: Wants to kill God "Metaphorically" the one who gave conscious and subconscious known as a mask. if it were to be destroyed we were gonna be like aliens who understand each other, no more lies no more subconscious thus all is bare.
    but is it truly living?
Schinezel: People wanted to be controlled by someone so here I am. I will be the sole ruler of the world. Unlike his father, he wants to be like God to his sheep the people.
Lelouch: I want the clock of time know as the circle of life to continue. People should choose for themselves and that is why masks are important. People lie because they are alive, they wear the mask as a facade to be a better person. in other words "it is a wish that is like Geass Don't you think? Lelouch? ~ C.C.
Also, Lelouch is also a believer in this quote.
"I believe in the potential of humanity" ~ Sora.
His other reason is Spoilers so I would not tell it here.
