Excellent review as always J.W. I look forward seeing any review you do even if it's not in a genre I am interested in viewing because of the insight you bring and the behind the scenes information. Have you ever seen What's up Tiger Lilly (1966)? Woody Allen's re-dubbing and re-editing of Japanese spy film International Secret Police: Key of Keys.
Hi J. Thanks for finding and explaining these. I was able to play some of Ironfinger and will watch the rest at some point. In my case the only drawback to watching movies on computer is the chairs; a not so great Staples office chair as opposed to my downstairs comfy plush recliner. Yup, it's a huge sacrifice! But I've done it before. Hope you're enjoying late fall/early winter and seeing some hardy winter birds. Take care.
Hello JW. I'm glad you got to watch and review both movies in this duology. They're playful and fun outings if not overly memorable. I'm fairly easy to please, so I enjoyed both films. I enjoyed your reviews as well. At the risk of taking up too much of your time, here are a few other Akira Takarada movies you might want to check out someday, if you haven't already. (I neglected to mention them before): The Last War (1961). Set in the far future of 2015, Japan is caught between two superpowers on the brink of nuclear war. The U.S. and U.S.S.R. are clearly intended as the rival nations, but they are not mentioned by name. Instead, fictional countries are used, as in Mothra, which was released the same year. Speaking of Mothra, one of the stars of that film, Frankie Sakai, is also the lead here. Yoriko Hoshi (later to star in Mothra vs Godzilla) plays his daughter, and Takarada is her husband-to-be. Eiji Tsubaraya supervised the special effects. The Three Treasures (1959). As the story goes, the success of The Ten Commandments, both in Japan and the U.S., inspired Toho to make their own sprawling epic. (The movie runs about three hours.) The story begins with the creation of the Earth, and leads into the birth of Japan. Set sometime in the mystical past, Toshiro Mifune plays the son of a king who tasks him with leading the army into battle with a far-off countrty. He has many adventures along the way there and back. Takarada plays Mifune's younger brother, who seems to be his father's favorite. Takashi Shimura, Kumi Mizuno, Akihiko Hirata, and Akira Kubo also appear. Eiji Tsuburaya again handles the effects. Women of Design (1962) Takarada and Yôko Tsukasa (she was also in The Three Treasures) star as a couple who work for rival advertising companies. Trouble ensues as they decide which is more important, their relationship or their careers. No special effects in this one; it's more of a modern day, slice of life story that's mostly of interest if you like the stars involved. Other similar movies with Takarada: The End of Summer (1961), The Lovelorn Geisha (1960), and Daughters, Wives, and a Mother (1960). Each is worth a watch but probably not a rewatch. Thanks for all your hard work. Reviewing is not easy.
I've had The Last War on my list for quite a while and just got a copy that has both the original Japanese version and the English dub. I look forward to watching it! I hadn't heard of any of the others, though. Thanks for the suggestions!
Thanks for the recommendation for these movies. I saw them and they're both great. I think your analysis is spot on, and I think maybe I liked Golden Eyes a bit more but both have their good points.
Have you ever seen Tokyo Drifter or Branded to Kill? Suzuki is the director. These are 60s surreal/hilarious/horrific/chill yakuza films. They’re still way ahead of their time. Almost defy categorization. Criterion has released pristine versions in recent years. Well worth exploring. … Huge fan of your channel! It’s a weekend tradition for me. Thanks for so much fun and insight. 😊
Could not find the movie on the site you mentioned? Bummer, but it does look like an interesting site that I will utilize in the future so…that’s something. Hope I can find these movies in the future as I’ve always loved What’s Up, Tiger Lilly, the comedy farce using a 60’s Japanese spy movie.
Been meaning to check these out for a while so thanks for the review/reminder. Have you watched the Flint movies? Those are pretty funny Bond parodies.
Yes! The Andy Hoshino / Dead-Eye flicks are quite the trip! Those subtitles during the musical numbers threw me for a loop, too, on first encounter. "Dinky-binky-boppy-HI THERE!" Wow. Quick rec while I'm here. If you're unfamiliar with Killers on Parade (1961) alias Yûhi ni akai ore no kao is kind of in the same vein. There's a clip on UA-cam that shows the opening to let you know what you're in for if you care to explore further. Also, I would love to finally track down the films Woody Allen chopped together and dubbed over for What's Up, Tiger Lily? (1966) Link for Killers on Parade: ua-cam.com/video/yIFpaB51Zas/v-deo.html
I use Internet Archive to listen to old radio shows. Anyway, I read the title too quickly and thought you were finally doing a Bond. Still hoping you give Goldfinger a chance. Not sure I would watch these, maybe, I do like stuff like Get Smart.
If you enjoyed Ironfinger and Golden Eyes, might I recommend some Nikkatsu action titles?
