    To verify that cylinder #1 is on TDC use a cylinder compression gauge and look for a peak reading while rotating the engine assembly by hand with all the spark plugs removed. If you think you overshot TDC continue rotating the engine till your sure the peak reading corresponds with the timing marks.

    I just finished working on a ford 4.0 timing chain pain in the butt, if you are going to replace the timing chain it helps bring the piston up to tdc then mark the cam so you can find the exact spot when you are finishedif not you could have trouble getting it back in time

    just what I needed to know. The front of that 3.5 is almost exactly like the 4.0 engine. I can only see minor differences.

    If #1 cylinder is on TDC of its compression stroke # 4 cylinder would just be finishing its exhaust stroke.If you watch the valves on #4 cylinder when the timing mark on the pulley passes the timing pointer you should see the exhaust valve start to close and the intake valve start to open.If both valves remain closed then #4 cylinder is on the compression stroke and # 1 cylinder is on its exhaust stroke. The motor would require a 360 degree rotation to have # 1 cylinder on the compression stroke. Since # 4 cylinder is located on the front cylinder bank it is way less difficult to remove the valve cover.You shouldn't need to take the rear valve cover off to determine #1 compression stroke.

    first off your videos a great helped me a lot. im in the process changing the guides and tensioner with the motor in, not replacing the chain though. i want to make sure that every thing line up tdc before and after i replace the parts.i turn the crank several times but it seem as if the right side is off matter how much turn the crank what do you suggest any info would be great

    you keep referring to the left and right sides of the engine incorrectly. always refer to sides as if you are standing behind the engine, not in front.

    cyl 1 needs to be top of compression stroke at tdc on cyl 1. thats all other cylinders dont matter unless you're replacing the whole chain.

    Here is an important Tip!
    The sure way to know if you are Tod Dead Center on the Compression Stroke,,,,,, is to take the Firing Order ...........
    1-2-3-4-5-6 and line up the Companion Cylinders !
    The Firing Order is Split in Half
    1-2-3
    4-5-6
    All the companion Cylinders will match vertically!
    So - if you are on Tod Dead Center on the Compression Stroke .......
    These are the cylinders that are companions!
    1 and 4
    2 and 5
    3 and 6
    I always use a Compression gauge to note the increase in pressure on number One Cylinder as it arrives on the Compression Stroke .
    The next step - is to verify if cylinders number 1 and 4
    are up at the same time ( Companions )!
    All the valves for Cylinders 1 and 4 should be loose and the valve springs stay uncompressed.
    The Timing Marks should all line up perfectly!
    Also another tip on GM the Firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 again Split the Firing order in Half!
    1-8-4-3
    6-5-7-2
    The companion Cylinders are
    1 and 6
    8 and 5
    4 and 7
    3 and 2
    All those cylinders will be up at the same time !

    I had my timing lined up. I forgot i already loosened tensioner. Then used impact to get the crank bolt out. Ended up changing the damn timing some how it totally caught me off guard when i seen the cam lobs pointing wrong way. Said F it and just took it apart. It was tdc but timing was already off. Im replacing a valves so pulling the heads. With the heads off cant I just make sure its tdc then put it together? Like as long as the 3 timing chain marks match the 3 gears would that mean my timings correct when i bolt it together?

    Man I could really really use some help like rn lol 1 think I'm confused about is the crank does it need to be dead on the line on the oil pump or like does the crank need to just meet the side of the line

    So if the timing is 180 degrees off, the engine will turn and try to crank, but won't start right?
    And no harm done?..just have to redo with cams aligned properly, and crankshaft turned one full rotation (clockwise), then reinstall main chain and button it all back up???

    Thank you for recording this video. I know it’s old, but I am hoping you can help me. I replaced the water pump in my 2010 G 37. I am hesitant to put the cover back on until I’m confident the timing is correct. Is there a way I can time the car without removing the valve covers? Thanks. I have a manual, but the terminology I don’t really understand. I’ve never worked on any of my cars Above the level of routine maintenance. I decided to take on this challenge. You’re Knowledge is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

      i got my engine cover half of today , i took the entire front end of the vehicle off including the radiator and condenser and when i dropped the oil pan low and behold there was a piece of the infamos gally gasket laying there so at leat i found the problem. to get the harmonic balancer off i had to fire up an arc welder and run a bead around the washer to heat it up enough to crak the bolt loose , i had to use a 1500 ft/lb impact gun , a propane torch would not work . i also found a broken engine mount , i think im gonna make a steel one myself instead of replace it with japanese pot metal, i cant believe these fools used such flimsy brackets to harness 330 hp

      If you leave spark plugs in it will be harder to turn because you are compressing air in the cylinder…just take spark plugs out

  • @brillowpad1
    @brillowpad1 10 років тому +1

    I cant seem to spin my engine manually it's giving me about a quarter turn either way and then it gives resistance, I removed the spark plugs so there is no compression building, Shoulf i remove oil filter because imo it feels like im fighting some kind of oil pressure when trying to turn the engine manually, any help would be great

    • @thatboyrick1
      @thatboyrick1 9 років тому

      It's me from a different account, my problem was that i had taken the chain off and put it back on a few teeth off, while the chain was off I had spun the crank by itself...bad bad mistake. this caused the Pistons and crank to be out of line. it was nearly impossible to line back up without machinery at local shop. I don't know your mechanical aptitude or hiw confident you are but I have been turning wrenched for years and it baffled me, finally I took it to a Nissan certified shop that ended up charging me like $1750.00 to fix it right! Whats crazy is this was a 3 month headache for me bc I wanted to do it Myself, I paid the price fixed it and drove it for maybe 2 months then bought an SS Camaro

    • @justinsherrill7836
      @justinsherrill7836 9 років тому

      Thanks for the speedy response. Between my father(who has is a second gen mechanic and shop owner) and his two employees, we are a very good team. Do you know any steps of the process that the shop had to take to get all of the components to line back up? Did they have to take the heads off? I am confident that we can fix the problem ourselves? I am about to be in deep water seeing that this is my girlfriends car lol. And great choices in the buying of the Bowtie SS!

    • @thatboyrick1

      justin Sherrill haha Thx man it's a beast I love it! Sorry I can't help you with what they did man, I was so pissed by the time I dropped it off I just said fix it! The guy just told me that i had really screwed my timing up to the point where I was 90 degrees off, he told me I was extremely lucky I didn't bend the valves, that's what you are feeling when you feel that resistance and can't get engine to spin, assuming you have the problem I had, I hate to dampen your spirit man but I have no idea what they did, it was a shop of guys who all had previously worked at Nissan and started their own shop. Good luck bro I know where you are.

    • @thatboyrick1
      @thatboyrick1 9 років тому

      justin Sherrill btw yes they did take the heads off, and reset cams chains etc. when they put it back together with new seal it leaked like a mofo, so they had to really seal it up well, you are a shop of mechanics so you know about how heads can be once taken off

  • @brillowpad1
    @brillowpad1 10 років тому +1

    How are you able to "spin" the engine with so little resistance I'm trying to get mine to top dead center by doing the same yet my engine is giving me lots of resistance should, I'm confused your barely putting effort into it any help would be great!
