Ed was asking how in 1971 underground cartoonists were looking at Herriman, Sterrett and the other early 20th century newspaper cartoonists. The two paths were Woody Gelman and Bill Blackbeard. Gelman (of Topps Bubblegum and also a publisher of nostalgic reprint books) hired a lot of underground cartoonists (Crumb, Spiegelman, Lynch). He had a great comic strip collection which they saw. Blackbeard was living out in San Francisco in the 1960s/1970s which is where all the underground cartoonists ended up. He travelled in their circle and a lot of them saw the art by dropping into his house/library.

This reminded me that there is a bootleg Donald Duck comic that was released in Sweden in 1985, the comic was called Elit Serien and only had one issue released, it had Donald Duck getting shot in east berlin and Daisy and Scrooge having a affair.
Consider the Irving Berlin estate which has such a tight control on his copyright, no one knows his music anymore. On the flip side of that is H.P. Lovecraft who had little interest in copyright and encouraged others to expand his universe. Cthulhu is everywhere now. The old rule was 20 years after creator's death. It's been wildly inflated by corporations who can buy senators to alter the rules. And as for Disney, what the heck are they doing with Mickey Mouse anyway? A whole lot of nothing. He has freedom now. Hopefully he'll score better than Winnie the Pooh, but on the other hand a caged fight to the death between Mickey and Pooh is something to enjoy.
a friend of mine gifted me an original printing of this comic. It's my most cherished comic.
I had the second issue when I was a little kid before i could read and thought it was regular Mickey. The characters, the story and dangerous cowboy and airplane battles rocked my world. I loved it so much I “read” it every day and attribute my deep imagination and life as an artist to having this comic at such a young age. To me these will always be the real deal and I thank the creator for giving me this comicbook.

I remember learning about Dan's Air Pirates from Comic Book Confidential when I was a youngin'. Just coincidentally, there's a cameo from a Satanic crackhead version of Steamboat Willy- Mickey in my comic thats coming out this month.
Any chance you guys would have a look at some of 'The Big Book of...' anthologies.? Some cool stuff in them, early Quitely too!

A short documentary called “Dan O'Neill & The Air Pirates: A Short Film” was uploaded like a month ago on the UA-cam channel Chibson USA. It has some clips of the seagull stuff. Really well made film too. Definitely worth a watch

YEP! Bobby London is a bad motherfucker! "Too talented to live...", he was told one time (Bobby told me who, can't recall just now). Kayfabe should deep dive Bobby London to see just what a REAL cartoonist he is. Each of the Air Pirates was/is a great cartoonist in their own direction, each worthy of a podcast (don't forget Sheri Flenniken, another great).

I had these. The art was good as far as copying someone else's style goes but the stories were weak. The fact that O'Neil produced them just to get Disney to sue him soaked each page with a juvenile approach. None of it could be taken seriously. He went out of his way to get them to notice and then when they did, he cried about being a tortured artist. All because he was trying to get out of his own syndicated deal that he signed with his eyes wide open. Way to rage against the machine...I guess.
Looks like issue 2 is stronger than issue 1. I picked up a physical copy of issue 1 last year and found myself unimpressed by it. Some standouts but overall just didn't vibe with it. Didn't love the style. Appreciate the historical context you guys provide for it though.

I did a search of Bud Fisher on your channel and couldn’t find anything directly mentioning him. Mutt and Jeff was also under the spotlight for copyright almost a century ago.
