MultiVersus Characters are AMAZING!

  • MultiVersus is an amazing game. It has fun gameplay, great music and fantastic netcode.
    But what makes a game great, or in this case "amazing", comes down to much more than all that. Great character design is a major part of that. And MultiVersus has some of the best character design in any modern game I've played.

    The statement about feeling like you have to think like Batman when playing him perfectly sums up how I've been feeling about the game. I'm a Jake main, and the way he plays is exactly how I had imagined it would be based on the show.

    One thing i noticed and love is that on the adventure time stage there is always a snail in a random spot like how in almost every adventure time episode they have a snail hidden in the background. Also 2 of my favorite voice lines are shaggy telling batman " they'll have to call you bruised Wayne when im done with you" which is not only a pun but also means shaggy knows batmans identity and batman when fighting on the batcave stage " how do all of you keep getting in here"

    Iron Giant arguably has my favorite references in the game because 90% of his attacks and animations are direct references to the film.
    Also, since you mentioned animation techniques of squash & stretch as well smear frames, you should totally check out the animation of Dragon FighterZ and Guilty Gear Xrd / Strive, because not only the animators employ those techniques MASTERFULLY, but also they created a celshading to replicate the anime style so well it looks like 2D.

      Totally makes sense. I was more referring to like her direct animations. Like her general sword attacks and stuff. I'm pretty confident some of her moves are directly pulled from Syrio Forel and their sequences together. Otherwise, most of Arya's scenes from the show are pretty one and done. Though I was going to reference the scene where I believe she got her first kill. Stabbing Needle through that guy's neck that murdered her friend. Because she kills 2 or 3 guys in that scene while they're all distracted by The Hound. And this could be used to draw parallels between how you should be trying to play her in 2v2's. Letting the teammate take the lead. But that also seemed like an unnecessary inclusion.

    Just wanted to point out that most old school animation was actually produced for theatres to be played before movies not television, the reason 24 frames is the standard is simply that drawing 12 frames and showing each frame twice before showing the next produced a fluid effect without unnecessary work load

    • @LostTangentOutpost
      @LostTangentOutpost  2 роки тому

      Yeah I should have added the theater bit. That's why I referred to them as shorts because they were short cartoons that were the lead in for the feature presentation. It's also why the intro is formated the way it is on old cartoons.
      24 frames is still the rate at which projection units ran at. As far as I remember. It might have actually been 23.99 or something. I forgot, I learned this in film class in 2008 and I've had kids since then... memories f'ed.
      But yeah thanks for pointing this out. I probably should have handled that portion differently.

    I want to agree on what you said about the road to victory being closely linked to the character's authenticity and style...and then there are Finn and Superman players.
    Finn players are spammy, cocky, and generally unpleasant. Supermen are usually cowardly and spend most of the match floating looking for an easy grab and throw off the stage.
    Inversely, when I find dedicated Reindog or Wonderwoman players they are generally altrusitic, patient, and good to have on your team.

    Cool stuff in general, yeah. Love the banter and great animation.
    My gripes: Reindog... looks weird. Like he's unfinished. Especially his eyes. Arya looks far off from how she looks in the show.
    12:32 I'd argue it isn't. This turns heavies like Bowser into useless characters for anything but memeing, challenge runs, and hyper casual play. All that potential damage they can deal won't matter if they can't deliver it and being able to take more damage won't matter if they'll keep losing trades... they'll eventually lose, no matter their durability. Meanwhile, Fox is the opposite. He doesn't hurt a lot but he's consistent and can be persistent. This is a "a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush" kind of deal.
    As for the video, the audio levels were too low. I had to double my usual volume level for things to become audible.

    They missed the mark on the "feel like the character" with Shaggy, he's got his attitude and moves more from the meme than the actual shows, up to the point where I find him obnoxious. I never loved Scooby-Doo as a franchise, but I had never felt disgust from their characters like with this Shaggy.
    The game is very polished for a big project like that, but not to the extent Smash or other AAA games have us accustomed. Still a really good game, of course.

    • @LostTangentOutpost
      @LostTangentOutpost  2 роки тому +1

      Well to your second point, this is a much smaller team than the team that make AAA games or even Smash. As in, I believe the team at PFG is less than 25 people. Whereas Sakurai had all of Bandai Namco at his disposal, and as I understand it, specifically Harada's team, to help with Sm4sh and Ultimate. So you're talking apples and oranges, not to mention all the new mechanics and structures they're building the characters around in this game. It's got aspects of Platform fighters, traditional anime fighters and MOBAs (with the cooldown/buff/debuff systems). I think there's some empathy to be spared for what they've accomplished with such a small team.
      To your first point, I think it was made pretty straightforwardly clear that they were aiming for Meme Shaggy over Scooby-Doo (the show) Shaggy. That said, his dodge, his idle pose and many of his lines are authentically pulled directly from the show. Sure they embellished on some attacks to help flesh him out as a platform fighter, but all the stuff we see seems pretty reasonable given the combination of influences.

      @@LostTangentOutpost I literally wrote: "The game is *very polished* for a big project like that… Still a *really good game* , of course", so there's my spare empathy. Not to mention I'm actually playing the game a lot, after years of Smash down to a burnout, it's really "a breath of fresh air" that I'm enjoying.
      About Shaggy, then everyone out of the loop on public announcements will feel as confused or alienated as me; and personally, no matter the reasons, I will still dislike MultiVersus' Shaggy lol.
      There are bits here and there in presentation, gameplay and feel that are wonky, cheap; but I'm ok with all that not only because it's an overall good game, but because it's still in beta. I'm hoping this game gets massive, and support can get us the diamond this gem has the potential for 🤞

      Yeah I think the more time it has to build up a fan base and the amount of money they must be making from the huge success it's had so far on steam, epic and consoles. This should put them in a position to make the team larger and increase the production value.

    I don’t really agree. To make a good characters, you don’t only have to have references to the source material. This is a game, the gameplay matters. Are they fun to play? Do the moves synergies with each other without any overshadowing another one? Are they able to use their full moveset? Are they distinct enough to the rest of the cast? There are many other questions that make a character actually well designed. Of course giving them a great aesthetic design or, making the character themselves and their personalities great or making them fateful to the og character in the case of smash, multiversus or guest characters and making their gameplay fit their personality is also a part of good game design but there’s not only that.

      Did you finish the video?
      If you did and you still felt the need to say all this, then I've got nothing to really say. I explicitly talk about how the gameplay feels for the characters and how they all feel unique and authentic to themselves in gameplay.

      @@LostTangentOutpost I'm not really talking about that. I literally said "making their gameplay fit their personality is also a part of good game design but there’s not only that". I'm just saying that gameplayitself apart from the personality is important.
