    As a SoCal band player, I have to say that I absolutely loved this performance. The guard, the band, and the drum major. It was just so exciting. Simply stunning, no matter what the judges say.

    Our band director always told us that our scores doesn't matter as much as how we represent ourselves. This band represented NCBA very well, and I thought their scores for this parade was rather unfortunate. This is one of the best marching band videos that I've ever seen. Absolutely fantastic.

      Daejin Park you have to understand that the circuit they're performing in is in SO CAL, they haven't seen a lot of American band with a GIGANTIC gaurd and a drum major mace! They are used to the old fashion SO CAL band. Golden valley did awesome!!!

    That opening brass sound.... AMAZING! I keep rewinding it to hear it again and again. The clarity in the music is perfect: articulations, dynamics, balance, contrast, accents and not to mention the level of difficulty of music. And the guard was absolutely impressive as always; a visual representation of the music.

    Absolutely one of the more exciting performances of the day! A crowd favorite for sure. Id rather have 10 Golden Valleys at a parade than some other AA bands. It would be awesome to have more NCBA bands compete at AFOB.

      I was at the event and enjoyed the performance by the GV Band. The crowd was appreciative and supportive of all the bands in AA, The crowd became very quiet to listen to the musical performance of the last few bands as they battled it out for the Sweepstakes award. This is quite normal at all SCSBOA band reviews.

    A great performance which is not indicative of the poor score they received!

    I'd say deserving of a 91-92. There were some tuning issues, but the opening was pretty damn amazing.

    What an entertaining performance. It was creative and well choreographed. It was nice to see something different. Lines are important to the judges in So. Cal. Thanks for making the trip and entertaining. When I was a youngster in the 80's Castle Park pushed the norms and were always underscored. I hope to see you guys in person.

    Great job by golden valley. No matter what they scored doesnt change the fact that they a norcal band travels south and competed. Different style from what they are used to. They did gr eat and shoukd be proud of themselves no natter what they scored

    I must agree with the comments about their score being too low. It was a fine performance of a march none of us down here have even gotten to hear on the street before.

      Could have something to do with the fact the guard was very large for what I have seen with these reviews, judges seem to be set in their ways... there was no "rear" static guard with tall flags, no drill team. Perhaps the identifying "banner" was not to be displaced to the rear? Or there is a rule as to when the guard can move to the back and they broke it. I have seen other guards do that, but not one so large. Regardless, the guard rocked.

    • @hanjisungs
      @hanjisungs 10 років тому +2

      scechal The guard is required to move to the back in NorCal though. Backflags aren't required in NorCal either. I'm not sure if they received the criteria/ score sheet before arriving, but it wouldn't really be fair if they didn't.

  • @Bandsofnorcal

    If they go down again, the guard needs a strict Socal routine that's all in the front of the band. I absolutely agree they deserved a 93.7ish possibly even a 94 based off the opening and the sheer difficulty of this march, the guard sadly went behind the band which made the guard judge freak out haha and tank the 90+ guard score. The guard was better than most on the street that day, I would know, I've watched these videos countless times. I would love to see the band go down again! Kinda sad to think that Socal bands can find success up in norcal since the judges are more accepting as opposed to someone seeing a normal band while judging and automatically tanking the score. Give the kids an unbiased shot, because I know for a fact some of the local bands that are put in the 90s should suffer at the hands of golden valleys performance that day. Sorry for my frankness of the matter!

      I agree completely with you Jack. I do remember when Washington Union HS attended the La Palma Band Review a few years ago and their guard modified their routine and didn't go to the back like they normally would. It worked out for them and both band and auxiliary received first place in their division if I'm not mistaken. When Arcadia has go to Napa to compete on that band review, the band and drum major score really well, but not the auxiliary.

      @Bandsofnorcal 5 років тому +1

      I really. think if GV would do that and go. down to SoCal a lot of those upper tier bands would get there butts kicked! but that's just my opinion haha! it would be interesting to see the top three from the north go down to a few of the reviews down south to test the water a bridge the gap from north to south. GV, Benecia and a wild card band for that year @@Music213

    How did this performance get an 89.25?
    Does SCSBOA grade differently than NCBA?

    • @bdfan4ever
      @bdfan4ever 10 років тому +5

      I'm in agreement. The score for the band and guard seems unreasonably low.

    • @hanjisungs
      @hanjisungs 10 років тому +5

      Yes, SCSBOA and NCBA score very differently. Styles are very different as well. Here's what I have noticed:
      NCBA: Louds are loud, and softs are extremely soft, contrast is emphasized. Snares use different drumheads. Rolloff is shorter. Guard's routine is more complicated(?), footwork not really emphasized.
      SCSBOA: Everything sounds like one dynamic level. Snares use different drumheads. Rolloff is longer. Guard's routine is much simpler, footwork seems to be emphasized.
      There's a lot more, but those are some of the differences. Considering the fact that judges are former and current band directors, they'd be accustomed to the style of the area they grew up/ worked in. SCSBOA seems less welcoming of differences though, as Loara and Arcadia went up north a few years ago and received the same scores they usually get in SoCal.

    • @pilgrimsteeth
      @pilgrimsteeth 10 років тому +3

      Allison C I think the NCBA bands are also more able to experiment with showmanship, styles, etc. whereas SCSBOA favors a very military-esque approach. Also: I think NCBA bands are able to take more liberties with music and marching to create a more contrasty and 'showy' shows whereas SCSBOA is more straightforward and prefers the music be played precisely as written.
      Different strokes, I guess!

      MrTimmyDP Golden Valley received no penalties for this performance. Before repeating the first part of the march, they play 4 bass drum beats, which constitutes continuous playing.

    • @SuperHonestReview
      @SuperHonestReview 10 років тому +3

      imakevids22 I believe the rules state that the music has to be repeated as dictated by the ending of their piece. Pieces normally are repeated immediately at the trio or back to the beginning. I'm not so sure about this march having four bass drum beats written in the end, but I could be wrong.
      A nice performance nonetheless.

    NCBA allows for more creativity than SCSBOA. Nor cal band's can perform more for showmanship than so cal and this style is not preferred. Golden valley is a premier band in nor cal yet contrasting styles of performance can hinder score. They deserved at least a 93 IMO.
