What a really nice smoothly styled car that an average person could afford. While not an expensive car, easily as attractive and curvy as much more expensive sports cars like a (not disimilar) Porsche Cayman or other "real" sports cars. No doubt those were much faster and probably better built, but it's nice to know that an average guy could still get a car that he enjoyed looking at, spending time in, washing and fiddling with on weekends, and didn't mind being seen in while cruising. Plus super practucal hatch! WHY don't all Fastback cars have this extremely useful and practical feature? And we need more cars like that again!
I had a red 92’ Hyundai Scoupe for many years. They were pretty common on the West Coast of Canada decades ago, though I haven’t seen one for ages. It was fun to drive and I used all of its 81HP to make progress. Zack should definitely find one to review if he can.
@@tocreatee5736 no, it is not the Sirius engine. This is the Beta engine, which is a completely different engine from the Sirius. Although they're both 4 cylindres, 16-valves, DOHC, the compression ratio, the fuel injection major system, the mass air flow sensor and both exhaust and air intakes are not exchangeable between Sirius and Beta.
I've been waiting forever for you to review one of these! You've gotta try to find the SE V6, they're great little cars! Wanted to mention the 2.7L V6 in later models is one of the most unique sounding V6s out there, with a decent exhaust it sounds like a cougar (the feline kind).
A couple of years ago I used to own a 96 Elantra with the same 1.8 16v, but the top trim version, sunroof, 4 disks brakes, ABS, AC, all independent suspension, etc, etc. Really nice for a relatively affordable 96 car.
Wouldn't be out of place. low slung sedans like this would be given aquatic animals nicknames. Us Indonesian has knack for nicknaming vehicles with it's loosely corresponding closest animal shapes. The 5th galant gen galant is colloquially called the Shark Galant because ot its profile
Hyundai of that era were not known for reliability. I had a 95 brand new off the lot and it had lots of gremlins. Broke down 3 days in with 100 miles on the odometer. I traded it in a year later at a 50% loss since it was always broken. Such a shame because I really loved it initially
as a former 1st gen tiburon owner im so excited to see this here. mine was the 2001 model. had every factory option available. had the 2.0L Beta I engine. it was my first car as a teen and i miss that car a lot. i still look around on fb marketplace sometimes to find one for sale. my most unforgettable car for sure. im on car #10 and 27 years old now. so it tells you how much of an impact it had.
Same here. My first car at 16 was a first gen tiburon in blue with the manual. Had lots of options and I still think about that car from time to time. Core teen memories with taking my drivers test in it. I was the main transportation for my friend group. Now I'm 33 with a camaro 2SS. The tiburon got me to love sporty coupes. 😂
This was the teenage girls dream during my high school time. They also liked the sunfire. When the next gen came out the guys liked it a bit more cause it was v6.
This interior screams 90s more than most 90s cars. 3rd and 4th gen camries in specific had 90s interiors, but there where more simple, this car has like ovals, and other strange shapes and everything is all round, the door cards swoop, the door air vents, even the font
I definitely recommend finding one with a manual. The Automatic really sucks the power out of the engine. I test drove a few automatics before buying this one.
This is also my brothers first car which since he has had since the late 2000s and at the time it only had 90000 or so miles on it and we have done so much with it even haul cargo in it which sounds crazy but it works pretty well honestly. Its definitely been with us for a long time now and that alone makes it special to us.
I had a yellow 2004 Tiburon for my first car. It was the Tuscani(gt) spec with the 6spd manual. I loved it and learned stick on it. The groups are toxic, so asking advice when working on it was iffy, but I do miss it.
I never thought you would ever review a first gen Tiburons, those things are practically unicorns and most of them weren’t kept in good shape. Idk why but the first gen design has a small soft spot for me since my uncle in Korea had one.
This was so nostalgic for me. My first car that I leaned how to drive with and took my drivers test at 16 in was a 1997 hyundai tiburon with a 5 speed manual. It wasn't a base though. It had the 2.0 and had alloys, a little stock spoiler and was a blueish greenish color.
Back in 2012 I had a 2000 with the 2.0 and 95k miles, auto trans and it was an absolute nightmare. Died on the freeway at 70mph, the ECU had entirely fried. I loved the car for how quirky and unique it was with some decent utility from the liftback, but it was so slow with the auto and stuff was always breaking on it. Topped out at around 87mph due to the gearing on the auto
I never realized how awesome these looked. I always thought they looked like a bar of soap compared to the later gens, but without the spoiler it forces you to look at the body lines, and it looks like it was made with intention!
1974 Pony Coupe concept. Never produced unfortunately however a lot of people don't know that Giugiaro (the designer) sold the production version plans to none other than John Delorean who produced the DMC12 (Back to the Future car). The DMC12 is the production version Pony Coupe.
I actually have a '94 Scoupe Turbo that I'd love to let you review. Unfortunately, 2 years, 2 engine shops, 3 rebuilds, and $1500 later, it still hasn't been fixed. I only brought it in for a bent valve from the previous owner letting the timing belt snap, now after 2 rebuilds it has no oil pressure and it's shredding the bearings and cylinder walls. Still waiting for the 3rd rebuild to be finished. :(
I had one of these as my first car in highschool! Specifically a red one like that! It had the automatic and I blew it on the way to the beach. Brings back some good memories.
I had a white one of these and it broke down like clockwork, literally once a month it needed something (either a crankshaft sensor or a thermostat, or an alternator) the list was endless. I gave it away years ago and the new owner still drives it somehow
The concept car that previewed this (HCD-1) was awesome. Some of those design elements made it to production. The final product offered none of the sporting promise of the concept, though. 😞 The refresh for these was offensive. Tried to put the Integra/Celica look on this and completely abandoned good taste.
I wholeheartedly agree with you! Shame they didn't produce the HCD I or II in the flesh, shame they didn't offer a turbo version of this, shame they didn't produce this car for more than a mere 3 years, and lastly, shame they didn't enter a WRC version of the F2 Tiburon after 1999 instead of the Accent. The 4WD SCCA Tiburon looked like it was more than suitable.
There is a spring loaded cup holder above the ash tray. I've had to replace it once when I caught the can that was in there. The cupholder would've failed anyway as it was specifically designed to hold 12oz cans according to owners manual.
My friend had that car in mid 2000s and I had a chance to drive it sometimes. I liked it more than him but I couldn't afford insurance. I had 95 Accent and inside it was a lot larger than Tiburon but Tib had much better drivetrain and suspension.
Prior to the big push for “green” vehicles and the proliferation of the electric vehicle , Hyundai was at the forefront of environmental stewardship , assembling its cars primarily with used pizza boxes. The program was ultimately moth-balled. Despite their attempts to keep the pizza boxes out of the land fill, Hyundais efforts only delayed the inevitable and their cars from the 90s littered landfills nation wide.
My mom had a Lada Niva in the 90s that did pizza boxes too. It was shart green, had leg cooking vinyl seats and came with a crank start on the front seat….
Reminds me of the fluidic sculptural design later adopted on the 2011-2016 Hyundai Elantras. I miss my 2013 Hyundai Elantra GLS. Hyundai is so underrated for how good they are. I drive a 2016 Honda CR-V EX-L now.
Its name means...Shark...... man I actually think they did Market this thing pretty strongly I remember back in the day that commercial was so cool of it like Jaws in the water
First of all props to owner, does not look like a 200k car. Now my oddly specific comment... 1:25 the typography choices under the hood of Korean cars is *terrible* It carries on into modern day with the "TURBO" on the Stinger GT. They're not inherently 'bad' fonts but they are so inconsistent with their cars' brandings.
*This comment is being written before i watched the video* This is the chance i give to the tiburon to show me that it's not a cheap try at the toyota celica
"We're in the back of a Tiburon." This man makes so many sacrifices for us.
😂 that just gave me a good laugh, thank you so much
Zack reviewing a Lambo and a 1997 Hyundai back to back. Never change man

Finally a fast car.

>first gen Tiburon
@@classicforreal Yes. You can drive it like you stole it without worrying about a five figure repair bill.

i'm glad you review forgotten old cars like these. it's nice to see such an in depth video on these little cars!
Also, ‘Tiburon’ is Spanish for ‘shark’! And in one of the generations they put some side vents behind the front wheels that look like gills
Technically, the Tiburon was not the precursor to the genesis coupe. It was actually the veloster that replaced the Tiburon.
YESSSS !!!! the first gen PRE facelift is awesome !! I'd argue though the tiburon and even the Scoupe is the beginning of the N brand not genesis

Zack, the cupholders are located right in front of the shifter, above that pop out astray. Wow!

How Top Gear ever compared this to a then current SC430 is beyond me.

I've got a soft spot for older hyundai cars. This one is in really nice condition, which is great to see!
I'm planning on getting a Hyundai Tiburon 2nd gen as my first car, love this little coupes from the late 90s early 2000s

I had an 01 was the year. That one is REALLY clean. The back seat review will probably be interesting

With a different set of wheels, not actually a bad looking car. Fun review of a car I had forgotten about
I never thought you would ever review a first gen Tiburons, those things are practically unicorns and most of them weren’t kept in good shape. Idk why but the first gen design has a small soft spot for me since my uncle in Korea had one.

I agree. I absolutely love the fact that it does not have the spoiler. I've actually had people ask if it was a 1960s Jaguar!
@@cjpappas7726uh huh.....
Neat review! Great cinematography showing the nice shape and curves. Nice job.
I mean i was like 10 or 11 when i first saw one of these and loved it. It looked so different. And i still love them.
I think the first sports car for Hyundai is the Pony but I could be wrong.....I really like this Tiburon.

the fact that it has a license plate from my state is the cherry on the cake
Racing floor mats makes it go faster
What an early year for macaroni styling
Still looks kinda modern. Also even though it’s cheap plastic the interior looks cool.
And my interior still shines like new 😎
I always thought these only came with a V6. Great to know that they also came with a four cylinder engine.
The v6 didn't become available until the 2003 redesign. Four cylinder engine was standard except on the 2003+ GT models that came with v6
Pounding the videos! Great job!
One time I saw a first gen Tiburon that had been cut it half (lengthwise) and smooshed together to make a single seater, it was the weirdest thing

Had one. Gray 2001. Hated it because it was a total turd. Drive a Civic coupe or prelude or Celica of the same era and then drive one of these. 🤮🤮🤮
Hyundai really had some of the sleekest design in the 90s yet no one mentions that

Back genuinely reminds me of a first gen Jaguar XK
A friend of mine had one of those in high school.
My dad used to have one with the 1.6 and the 5mt I learned to drive on that one and i also had my first crash. 😂😂😂
This is Hyundai`s sport/coupe genesis before the Genesis :)
Scoupe or as Richard Hammond would call it the Escoupay

maybe Hyundai should've kept the Tiburon name for their coupe instead of Genesis Coupe
03:44 BIG FRIGGIN BOTTLE FAIL!!!

Was just called a Hyundai Coupe In the UK
The car literally looks like a corgi without the wing.
Find a scoupe turbo next
ah yes the little celica that couldn't
There's a car you don't see any more. This styling is generic but better than the bugeyed one.
This should have had at least 40-50hp more to be competitive
its legit a good look little car those. Saw one today in aussie lands ( perth wa Lol )
