THe problem is - it is the Ketamine INFUSIONS that work excellent. And it's near impossible for folks to get an intraveneous infusion at home for Ketamine. This kind of treatment that works best is done in a clinic or hospital setting because an infusion pump and monitoring of BP and such is needed. The oral compounded troches don't work anywhere near as good as an intravenous infusion.

@ 9:21 that was not true for me. I didn’t respond “robustly” until the sixth infusion. That is the case for many people and my clinic confirmed that it takes longer for some people. So, no, don’t stop at two infusions if you truly want to see if this works for you.
Question for the two docs in the vid...or any other MD reading this ... Does the psychiatric community intend to push for FDA approval of the Ketamine INFUSIONS, so that they will no longer be "Off Label" and more insurance companies willing to cover them? I asked that same question of the two Yale DOCS promoting their Esketamine patent, and they deleted my post. So maybe some other doc not interested in protecting the Esketamine patent will answer...
I assume they need studies and data before it will fall under normal health care coverage. Clinics are available now in North America. Many people find it worth a few thousand dollars to get relief from depression and suicidal ideation instead of waiting
@@Robin-bk2lm You are incorrect in your above suggestion. According to the National Institutes of Health database on PubMed, there are over 258 Randomized Controlled clinical trials listed with the title of "ketamine" and "Depression" in their database. So there is much clinical trial data to show these treatments are effective. Safety is also not an issue, since the FDA approved Ketamine at much higher doses than used to treat MDD, way back in 1970. "Off Label" does not mean that insurance companies do not pay for infusions. Many do, and to suggest otherwise is mis-information. What is needed is a national "Truth in Advertising" law that bans any of the specialty ketamine clinics that treat only mental health issues, to stop pedaling mis information that insurance companies do not cover "off lable" treatments. They do. What the clinics need to start doing - is tell the truth and instead inform clients that the CLINIC does not accept insurance - NOT that insurance will not cover the infusions. The ONLY WAY to find out if an insurance company will pay for the infusions, is for an MD to SUBMIT THE BILLING to the paitents insurance company, and see if the insurance company pays for it. It's the only way. The problem is - ketamine clinics that specialize in this business outright lie to potential and existing clients and suggest that insurance companies do not cover these treatments - for depression. The specialty clinics do this, because the specialty ketamine clinics that treat mental health issues want the cold hard cash, and they do not want to file insurance claims because insurance companies generally will not pay the higher fees that many of the specialty clinics charge which is often double or triple of what insurance companies are willing to pay for the treatments. This is because ketamine is extremely cheap - my hospital only pays about $28.00 per 100 mg vial of Ketamine. The majority of the cost is for the infusion service itself which many clinics are charging up to 800 dollars per infusion or more. My insurance company on the other hand only will pay for about 300 bucks per infusion. Which is why the clinics don’t take insurance - they want to charge a LOT more.
@@gretchenbell9340 So why did not Yale also go for FDA Approval for Ketamine INFUSIONS? YALE gets both Federal and state taxpayer money right? Or are they 100% privately funded?
For the two docs in the vid - Ketamine infusions are no longer, as you say - "Novel", or at the very least is on the fast track for becoming a standard treatment for depression.
Unfortunately, having to go into the office every single time you need to take this medication for treatment is not convenient for most people. I’ve never taken it before but could not even imagine that most people could do this since the cost, having a job, family, and sheer lack of convenience would put this medication out of reach for most of them.
I agree, it’s terribly inconvenient and expensive. There are psychedelic telemedicine companies like Mindbloom emerging that can help with cost and convenience. You take ketamine lozenges at home and it’s much cheaper than in-office IV infusions. You could do it in the evening after work rather than having to take the day off to go into the doctor’s office. It’s still not as cheap as it should be, but I think it’s a step in the right direction.
It took a lot of planning and support from people around me including my employer to be able to get the treatment. You have to have a driver, the clinic is not nearby, 2-3 days off work on weekdays and the $$$. My initial 6 treatments cost 3,000 out of pocket. I had to finance this treatment, I have not started yet but I really hope it helps me.
I second that! One year of infusions for me. After my start up of 8 infusions over 4 weeks, I got it down to one infusion every 3 or 4 weeks. I can go longer but I have to really watch my diet and self care if I want to stretch it out past that.
I have recently quit cold turkey my antidepressants after 20years. I put it down to using Ketamine. Self medicated as I live in the UK. I’m staggered as I was not taking for this reason
7 ketamine treatments in and I still want to off myself more than anything. Guess it comes down to the individual and both their body chemistry and levels of Trauma / depression.
Day 1 of ketamine treatment holy WOW. Way more intense than I was thinking definitely not for the faint of heart....was really out there. Felt like my brain was getting rewired visually too was super wild. Was completely wiped the entire day brain fried. No day 2 of treatment tomorrow really hoping this helps my horrible anxiety. I am still kind of nervous though after day 1 low dose you really have to want this treatment because it's not easy.
I had the opposite effect. It was boring like being drunk and not being able to walk and made me really aggressive the following days :/ I hope it works for you!
@@yuyukawa9104 Do you feel that had to do with the dosage and method? I am taking lowdose oral. It doesn't even make me dizzy. Individual effectiveness, of course, is probably very variable.

@@32toffeeman I am assuming you are asking if you can take Ketamine in a pill once or twice a day? If that is your question (I say this as a paitent not a doc - I'm not a doc) - The infusions - they are done in a doc’s office. The troche's (lozenges) yes, I took them for one month - two 50 mg lozenges a day. The problem with that though, you need nearly three times as much ketamine in lozenges, than you do with the infusions, to approach the same effectiveness. Even with that, they are no where near as good as the infusions...at least that was my experience comparing the two, but you might experience something different. The infusions are far better because the drug was designed to be administered by IV. The thing I don't like about taking lozenges internally, they made me queasy, and drowsy for much longer. With the infusions, I am pretty much good to go after about 15-30 minutes post infusion, and they don't mess up my whole day. With the lozenges, they take a lot longer to get into your system, and to get out. Actually the lozenges felt like a different drug compared to infusions - they act differently - at least for me. And the good thing about the infusions, once you do a startup - some people can go for several weeks between infusions before they need to come back for another - when the symptoms re appear. That’s how you know when you need another infusion - when the symptoms come back. For me right now, my sweet spot is about one infusion every 2 weeks, depending on my lifestyle for that month. If I eat better, get some exercise and keep busy, I can go longer. The longest I ever went between infusions was 10 weeks - that was when I took them on start up - 8 infusions over a four week period. I felt after about 6 or 7 weeks after my start up protocol, I felt a need to come back in. The only way you can really find out what works for you is to try them both. Or maybe the Esketamine spray - but that is done in docs office too.
I live in Norway, they have it in private clinics but it’s extremely expensive. ;( And not even sure it works for the long run or at all, and my anxieties are way to severe and mental illnesses + I have a wierd sleeping disorder..
Get some black market k powder, test it, learn how much to use (start at 1mg/kg of weight of powder by nose), get some relief. Learn more. Enjoy. Use it as med and not to get high.
I have severe mental illnesses and suffered almost since I was born, it all developed throughout my traumatic childhood. Abusive and ill parents, and severely traumatic upbringing and religious brainwashing. I got worse and worse and had no friends and support and now I’m close to 23. But I can’t get better and I have; severe anxieties, dpdr(every symptom of dissociation), depression and extremely down, and I also have this thing where my relatives/thoughts related to them shows up in my head and I disappear in it without any stop. I also have an undiagnosed sleeping disorder the doctors haven’t found out about, and tried everything but it doesn’t. I’m suffering non stop 24/7 and don’t know what’s the solution for all my mental illnesses and severe suffering and my sleeping disorder. I was on main medications such as Prozac but it made my sleeping disorder worse, killed my sexual ability(I already suffer with that part too) and it made me like a zombie.
For me, Ketamine has no sexual side effects, and so far I have had 45 infusions in the past two years. And I sleep great - especially the evening after my most recent infusion!
I hear you and have a similar story (60+yom). Black market ketamine helped but be careful you use it as medicine and not to get high. I've heard many similar stories where it helped.
@@Robin-bk2lm If you had read my previous - I am talking about MEDICALLY SUPERVISED - by an MD - in a hospital - Ketamine infusions to treat mdd. NOT black market oral meds which is NOT the same thing. Not even close. To compare the two shows your ignorance on the subject.
Everything the guy said was good EXCEPT he did not answer the question about cost honestly. Esketamine is ridiculously cost prohibitive!!! Over $600 - $900 per session + at 2 - 3 sessions per week. Worse, for-profit insurance companies DO NOT cover esketamine. At least not yet.
I heard a rumor that it costs only $5 a dose to make Ketamine. So what justifies charging $500 a dose to administer? I don't want to hear the crybaby talking points again that there is the clinic overhead, malpractice liability, and the expense and time invested in medical training. Supervising Ketamine is on the same level as giving a vaccination. It doesn't involve a surgery room, just similar resources to coping with anaphylactic shock/allergic reaction. I tried contacting Eric Ruhe (PHD pyschiatrist in RadboudUMC) and he wants to see me for an 2nd opinion.
Then find an anesthesiologist that will provide the service. There is no law that states that only Psychiatrists can set up patients or put in an order for ketamine infusions. Actually - most of the docs that supervise these infusions are MD anesthesiologists - and have the training and skills to do them, unlike Psychiatrists. Even an general practitioner MD can do them.
The absolute worst part of taking it to stay alive isn't the cost, it isn't that its hard to get, it isn't because most doctors don't believe In it. The worst part is people of all walks of life assume your lying to take ketamine to get high.

I’m bipolar & seriously looking into this. I understood him to say Bipolars are only allowed ONE dose? If we have the one dose and get better and then by the way you speak you revert a little bit for a while then what good does it do a Bipolar to take this treatment if they only get one chance to feel better the rest of their life and never have it again? I don’t understand it. Also the two clinics here say that they give treatments three times a week for two weeks and then it’s individual as to how often do you have to have it again. This guy said you have it twice a week so that makes me wonder if these guys don’t know what they’re doing which is scary.
Wondering if this is offered in my state, Mississippi? I spoke with one of my physicians yesterday about this and he is located in, Memphis TN and he doesn’t know of anyone who offers it.
CHeck out the pain clinics or infusion clinics in TN. There is no requirement that these infusions must be given by only clinics that provide them for mental health purposes. Any infusion clinic can do these infusions. As a matter of fact, some cancer infusion clinics in hospitals will also do them for mental health issues. You just have to call around and do your homework and don't depend only on your PCP to set you up. It took me several months of phone calls and visiting clinics to find help.

My insurance company on the other hand only will pay for about 300 bucks per infusion. Which is why the clinics don’t take insurance - they want to charge a LOT more.
I believe it is FDA approved now
Esketamine is fda approved and all medicaid programs cover it. Is also available for free in many clinics
Hell yes it works! No more Anhedonia. I'm reborn!
Just curious, did you experience the "tripping effects" they mention?

Ketamine is the only thing that worked for me. I was put on LITERALLY every psych med there is.
Well done. Credible experts. Much appreciated. I shared this with curious family members. Even the first 10 minutes is a great summary.
I have been doing ketamine infusions for four years. IT WORKS
How often do you do infusions?
Every 6 to 8 weeks It really does work! It is extremely fun.
@@anghan435 every 6 to 8 weeks
I second that! One year of infusions for me. After my start up of 8 infusions over 4 weeks, I got it down to one infusion every 3 or 4 weeks. I can go longer but I have to really watch my diet and self care if I want to stretch it out past that.
I bet you remember your very first infusion! I do! Better than sex (almost) :)
I have recently quit cold turkey my antidepressants after 20years. I put it down to using Ketamine. Self medicated as I live in the UK. I’m staggered as I was not taking for this reason
It’s ability to shift the mind out of depression in minutes even f it’s for a short period it’s truly astonishingly !! ❤

Do psychiatrists get depressed listening all day to depressed people ?
@Sabrinacarpenter-xy7nz are you hawking mindbending drugs you naughty girl !?
7 ketamine treatments in and I still want to off myself more than anything. Guess it comes down to the individual and both their body chemistry and levels of Trauma / depression.
Did you experience anything during your sessions?
Are you still with us?
Day 1 of ketamine treatment holy WOW. Way more intense than I was thinking definitely not for the faint of heart....was really out there. Felt like my brain was getting rewired visually too was super wild. Was completely wiped the entire day brain fried. No day 2 of treatment tomorrow really hoping this helps my horrible anxiety. I am still kind of nervous though after day 1 low dose you really have to want this treatment because it's not easy.
Any update?
Oh I see your videos... I'll check
What format and dose did you try?
I had the opposite effect. It was boring like being drunk and not being able to walk and made me really aggressive the following days :/
I hope it works for you!
@@yuyukawa9104 Do you feel that had to do with the dosage and method? I am taking lowdose oral. It doesn't even make me dizzy. Individual effectiveness, of course, is probably very variable.
A vision is a very emotional image, the most powerful image that you can come up with for yourself at this time.
This vision will become like a hallucination in other peoples mind and this could be the cause of them creating extraordinary things.
My insurance is covering Esketamine :))
omg Which insurance company!? How did you get it approved?
ps. Great news :)

Ketamine works well, saved my life. The Nasal version does not work, it is a waste.
agreed!
I tried the Troche's. They are OK but no where near as good as the infusions. Nothing can compare to taking the drug via infusion.
@@dbsabo2 can you take this medication full time for anxiety/depression
For those of us who cannot afford the expense of ketamine infusions, there is no other choice than to try Esketamine.
Ok video. Misleading title though. Its mlre a general overview and offers less in depth information than the title suggests.
Mushrooms are cheaper oh but you can’t make money so it won’t be legalized.
Thanks for a great discussion.

@@dbsabo2 Unsupervised and ‘black market’ source is VERY risky but may be an act of desperation rather than ignorance.
Shop around, You must be dealing with money hungry doctors who don’t care if you ever get well or get treatment
My insurnace company also pays for Esketamine. I prefer the infusions though.
Charging $500 for Ketamine infusion is greed and the medical industry acting like a Medical Mafia Loan Shark!
If ketamin works better its should be first choice
I found intramuscular injections to be very helpful but the improvement lasted for only about 2 days. Sublingual ketamine offered no benefit.
My pschiariast dont want to give it to me. Its to new, has no experience with it, bla bla bla. One a week for how many weeks?
4:40 is so flawed and an indictment on the dysfunction that is the the pharmaceutical industry with all its lobbying powers. Why would any practitioner what to have a patient risk the nasty side effects and low success rates of SSRI's, when a treatment such as Ketamine is showing far superior results with far less horrible side effects.
You can’t get off antidepressants the withdrawals are intolerable not to mention you can die.

I know there are good clinics in Nashville, best of luck
