I'm watching this video without any previous experience or exposure to German and it's amazing how much I can pick up from the common vocabulary. I'm just taking notes and repeating out loud pronunciations and it feels very fast for learning. Once you learn non-European languages though you begin to appreciate the leg up you get with studying a language with similarities rather than none.

Why would anyone say their opinion openly about discrimination with an African American there? Obviously they would try to say something nice. I would say this is biased sample survey.

Ach! and the fact that the video would be uploaded for the entire world to see your opinion?? Deterring enough? (Think of your family, friends, employer, employees, customers, etc) I think the presence of the African American camera man wasn't really tipping the scale. But I do agree that there are solid reasons why the answers could have been biased.

There is one solution for this- "What do people say about me is none of my business. The only thing I can do is to ignore them and proceed with my great aim without troubling anyone."
say this sentence three times whenever you face a discriminative situation. It works. I'm also a foreigner living in Germany. I have seen many discriminant people here. But, trust me, you will really find good people if you follow above lines.
Discrimination exists everywhere in the world. Wherever there are people, there is discrimination. Only, the intensity differs from region to region.

Living in Germany for more than two years, I have to say I've experienced a lot of discrimination, even from few colleague. It is sad, because it is so true. One of my colleague bets me having no driving licence, and her boyfriend, also my colleague, just refers me to other people as "you know, Chinesin". They just feel they are better than me for no reason (maybe because I come from a poor country, say China?). And it seems that some cashiers just hate Asian people, they roll their eyes on us, sometimes even throw the receipt to us. I mean, us, not me only. I checked with my Mongolia friend, and some other Asian people, we can spend hours sharing our bad experience... Anyway, most of people I meet in Germany are really nice and friendly, I have several friends here, and my boyfriend is also German. Whenever I am treated rudely or obviously discriminated, I just think about how nice my boyfriend is, otherwise I will be really sad.

For any foreinger planning to go to germany: The vast majority of germans arent discriminating and are open minded, especially younger ones. The population is just very educated and concious about the subject and therefore they all have an opionion about it. This has something to to do with our past, we know first hand to what horror predejuces can lead. We are also very honest and dont fear to tell that we definetly have discrimination in our society, especially in outer regions and more in eastern germany than west germany. The bigger cities (especially berlin) are generally very open minded and inclusive. There are good chances you dont experince discrimination for being black/gay etc unless you live in smaller towns in Thüringen, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt or meckelburg-vorpommern...The refugee crisis sadly divided our country, and some (not all!) pull out old belief systems. But even in eastern germany tose are an minority!

We had several African, Russian, Polish, American and French families in the city and we all lived together - grew up together. It didn’t matter.

@@iant419 Thanks for taking time to leave a reply, Sir! I am sure there are a lot of bad things, including racism and the persecution of certain religions, happening in those countries too, perhaps to a worse extent than in developed and more diverse countries. If you ask these people in the video, many of them I think would actually say so too. I think they are holding a country like Germany to a higher standard because it has the capacity to be held to a higher standard in terms of how far the society has come and how much it has learned from its own history. I don't think these people are saying "Germany bad, my country good". Plus, I assume some of them are actually Germans who had no or little memory of where their parents or great-great parents came from. So they have a good reason to voice their opinion and try to make their own homeland (=Germany) a more open society where they are also viewed as Germans.

They work less, they work at lower positions with lower pay grades and consistently choose family over career to a higher degree than men. So, I am not even saying give the same money to a woman that is in this situation and a man who has basically the same job, I am saying give equal amount of money to the woman that chose to put carrer first because she actually sacrificed a lot and just the fact that she is a woman should not be a disadvantage.

M Rostov Of course I’m generalizing. If you read what I wrote again you will notice wordings such as “to a higher degree” and “most”, but that doesn’t make it less valid. There are always exceptions to the rule. Not all orchs are evil, right? :)
However, I’m sorry but biology doesn’t care what you consider to be disadvantages or not. And if you think staying home with a child is a disadvantage, you are seeing the situation from a false feminist perspective according to which raising children has less value than a career.
Also, it has been shown that the more liberal a society is in terms of gender roles, the more women and men choose professions “typical” for their gender/sex, which belies the idea that it’s some sort of coercion.

Ich bin nun fast 60 Jahre und schwul und ich habe in meinem Leben noch nie deswegen Angriffe gegen mich in Deutschland erlebt. Ich bin sehr glücklich, dass ich in diesem Land aufwachsen konnte. In anderen Ländern hätte man mich ermordet (z.B. Iran).

He would say something between his teeth and turn very red, like angry. I didn't understand what he said to me but I didn't need to understand. Although I would greet him with a "Guten Morgen", he didn't like to see me in his bus. That was in a small town called "Schloss Holte - Stukenbrock. But that was not as bad as going to church every Sunday and no one would talk to me or made me feel welcomed. I was there too for their Christmas activities. After 4 months of going to that church, nobody seated next to or around me. People could clearly see me. Even a German moving in from another region might be labelled an 'outsider' ('Fremder') for years when living there. FreckleHeckler you are entitled to your opinion. There is nothing anyone can do about immigration in Germany or other European countries or anywhere in West from Asia, Africa if your country do not have the talent and skill can not be fulfilled by your own citizen. Illegal immigration, illegal asylum and crime should be shunned everywhere. But if a foreign job applicant is more talented in any country and the job profile suits her/his career ambition, it upto his her choice to live, work and apply for citizenship in that country. Thats basic democracy fyi. You can go back to being what you once were, no problem and immigrants will definitely leave your country. No one cares. FYI every country owns a century or an era in terms of power like India or China was back in time, then came Europe, the USSR, USA and now maybe China. Who knows. USA was discovered by Columbus because he was looking to come to India. So remember its your country‘s time, yes you are superior in terms of development. But never belittle another country or their people. Time changes. In 1750, India was world’s 20% economy, in 1945 (after British) it was 2%, in 1990 India defaulted its forgein reserves, today its 5th largest economy. There is a lot to be done, a lot to be dealt with but understand every country is on its own path of progression. Still, with kindness I thank you for sharing your opinion. Namaste.

Discrimination is not just about the acceptance of the people with foreign backgrounds, it is judging or treating someone based not on his or her individual attributes but on the race/social group/class or gender s/he belongs to. In this video some interviewees did talk about the problems of gender inequality and with the LGBT community, which nicely demonstrated the diversity of discriminatory behaviors. Actually no country can be free from this... sadly.
I'm a Chinese student in Germany, and I've met at least three German people who asked me if I eat dogs, more people think I must be an exception because I don't have slanted small eyes or eat rice all day. It was not so easy for Asians not to be noticed, since we are "visually so different" from all Europeans (yet no Asian was included in this video, schade). To some of them, it might just be out of curiosity or stereotyped impression (shaped by media for instance), but still I don't feel so comfortable about these ^^' When you're the minority, you might become more sensitive towards discrimination, but we all can be minority when it comes to certain topics.
Another interesting thing I noticed from the comments, when people talk about some political issues, it cools down the anger a little bit when someone refers to some other regions geographically far away, and I really don't think this is cool. I'm sure many Asian people from the countires someone listed in his comment would warmly welcome all of you to visit them and see the real things with your own eyes :)

    • @EasyGerman
      @EasyGerman  6 років тому +2

Thanks for sharing your experience Motto Li. I think Germans are indeed less conscious and less sensitive about stereotypes towards Asians and making fun of these stereotypes. Most Germans, they wouldn't even be able to tell the difference between Chinese, Japanese or Vietnamese. I mean there is already many Germans who like to travel and then they would become more conscious and more aware... but the others they just dont. And then there is nothing they connect with China or Vietnam or any Asian country at all... except for those stupid stereotypes that they know from the movies. So I would assume that most people know that it's bullshit so they would assume that everyone knows that it's bullshit and then they would just refer to these stereotypes in a kind of joking way to break the ice (knowing/thinking that it's clear that it's bullshit). Just like the way Janusz did at the end of the breakfast episode when talking about cocaine in Colombia. He has never been in Colombia, so he didn't know how serious people felt about this stereotype after all. So for him it was just an innocent joke, however a lot of people felt seriously pissed about that comment.

I've witnessed blatant racism towards my black friend when I was a kid. Surprisingly, all the instances I've witnessed have come from adults (she was a kid!). Adult strangers would actually call her "chocolate" in passing. Granted, we lived in a very rural, very conservative area in Germany. People in places like Berlin might have different experiences.
Then there's my aunt and uncle who are extremely Islamophobic. I personally can't stand religion, Islam included, but I don't go hating on the people in that religion of course. So, my aunt and uncle got new neighbors - Turks and Muslims. My uncle wanted to test their cleanliness and threw TRASH into their garden and freaking stopped the time until they would pick up the trash HE threw into THEIR garden! What. The. Fuck. If that ain't discrimination then I don't know what is.
What this video doesn't mention is discrimination against handicapped people. I could tell you a million stories about what my Asperger sister had to go through in school with her teachers.
Also, I have a friend who is in a wheelchair. Now, the type of discrimination I'm talking about isn't blatant. It's more like societal/political discrimination. I can only ever visit HER, but she cannot visit me because she cannot use the train station in her home town to catch a train to come here. That train station does not have elevators. She can only access one platform out of 3 or 4. One time, we thought we would meet up for Pride (LGBT discrimination is another thing I'll mention later) and the train would depart from the platform she would be able to access. She never arrived at Pride though. Why? Because the fucking train was one of the old ones whose doors were way too high up and way too narrow for a wheelchair to reach and pass through.
As for LGB, as of this month the political discrimination is nearly history (there's still details concerning in-vitro for lesbians). This doesn't pertain to the T in LGBT though. Trans people still have to put up with degrading psychological "tests" and embarrassing questions to convince the authorities of their true gender. It's an arduous, year-long, process. Doesn't the Constitution state that everyone is equal, regardless of gender?! Guess it only pertains to cis gender people, doesn't it?
In terms of the whole of LGBT, society is definitely not there yet. Again, I live in a very conservative and rural area, and it might be different in big cities. But people here are quite hostile towards LGBT people, judging by the readers' comments in the local newspaper. Stuff like, "gay people are mentally sick and shouldn't be a part of this society. They are secretly all pedos and our kids aren't safe anymore" is a common thing to read in our newspaper, and as a lesbian I just don't feel comfortable around here knowing these people might literally be my neighbors.
Speaking of hostility, we have literal Nazis in my town who attack people who volunteer in refugee centers. Many of us have received literal death threats (not me, thank goodness). We are being accused of promoting the mixing of races. Like, WHAT THE FUCK?!

Discrimination is certainly a bad thing, but there's another side of it: so called reverse discrimination, when people discriminate those who can't stand something, that goes out of their, native to a certain country, culture's frame. I mean, everyone has a right to think the way they want. But is it right to force other person to think differently? It's a sort of double-edge sword.
