Thank you for posting this tutorial. I just followed along with you on my iPhone to replace my dead 320G Western Digital HD with a new 3.0TB Seagate. I have an Early 2008 24" 2.8GHZ Core Duo iMac. Everything was just as easy as you made it look. The biggest obstacle that I found was getting the tape off of my microphone wire. My Mac had never been opened and that tape was really on there. My compliments to your camera operator and editor. The quality of your video really made it easy to t
I love your do it yourself demo. It was fantastic. I just turned on my iMAC 27 mid 2010 and noticed the disc drive is making a funny sound. After a while got the dredded folder with ? mark. Which obviously tells me the harddrive is dead. How is that possible? This thing has had less than 200 hours of use. Well, your instructions is golden. Thanks for sharing
Husband and I just did this and saved ourselves about $400. It was a little nerve wracking, given that I am not the most technically minded person, but by crickey, it worked a treat. Some of the little connectors etc on my model were a bit tricky to remove and replace, but Allen all, the video combined with the written guide were excellent. Thoroughly recommend giving this a go if you want to save some money.
PS, I did not remove my LED screen. I used my GPS suction cup to remove glass, unscrewed the screen, disconnected only a couple of connectors, and lifted the top part of screen. I was able to unscrew HD and lift out. All told, in and out it took me ten minutes, NOT counting driving to best buy to buy HD. Download SSD fan control to control your fan.
Excellent stuff!!! One of the things I was worried about with purchasing an iMac was being able to upgrade the HDD and this has given me confidence in how easy the process is! Thanks so much for the insight!
I've used iFixit's guides for years to repair all sorts of Apple gear. People need to learn to fix things instead of throwing them away. With their guides I swapped out an old HDD in my iMac for an Intel SSD, made the computer run like new and only took me about 40 minutes.
Smart + Beautiful Lady explaining what to do... u do realize this is what made me fail at chemistry class in high school! Now I'm afraid I'm gonna break my iMac because I was concentrating on the teacher instead of the lesson. If only all How-Tos were like this :D P.S. Once you get past the beauty, you realize this is a really excellent guide.
Really useful. Not done this yet but contemplating it. BTW I asked about HDD upgrades in the Apple Store the "Genius" said its really easy to upgrade by essentially following the procedure in this video. He gave me this advice to deal with dust etc: Do the work in the bathroom just after taking a shower, the dust will get moist and fall to the ground. Well if you have space that's probably good advice, I don't however!
I actually found this video very helpful for 2 reasons. I wasn't aware that there are specific replacement hard drives. I thought I'd just put in one of the many that I have laying around. Turns out that won't work. Secondly, I'm usually completely unafraid to take apart a computer and work on it, but this video has shown me what it takes to work on an iMac, and I realize...this is not something I want to do. Thanks for the helpful video...and the french manicure was a nice touch.
Thank you very much, I have two old iMacs at the office, only to find that one of them has better specifications than the one I'm actively using, now I believe that switching the HDDs is the quickest solution instead of retransferring the huge data and re-installing all the softwares. How can I be sure that no compatibility issues may occur? the one I'm using now is is mid 2010s , with an i3 processor, while the one I'm planning to use is mid 2011s i5 processor. both have the exact OSX El-Capitan; version 10.11.6
Would this be the way to go in order to update the operating system too? My Early 2008 iMac is running El Capitan and can no longer be updated. Thanks.
Great video, MJ. You're right, this process ended up being much easier than it first appeared, thanks in large part to your video and the accompanying guide. Thank you so much!
Hi, My 2008 Intel Aluminium iMac's Hard Drive just totally died... need urgently purchase a New one. You've mentioned that iMacs bult before the late 2009 don't need specific HD's? I am a bit undecided ..... what good brand and type i should get? thanks in advance for any tips
Thank you. Followed the instructions, took my time and am now looking at a revitalised iMac with a new 2Tb WD drive installed all with a minimum of stress.
thanks built 100s of PCs but never played with my mac untill my harddrive died , watched this vid and did it in 10 mins , P.S you dont need suction cups just run your nail under the top of the glass and it will raise back far enough for you to pull forward , as said 10mins done , and a fresh instll of windows on my new hardrive , thanks again
Came here for this myself. 0:44 seems to suggest if your iMac is Late-2009 Model or later, you won't be able to switch brands. Though it doesn't say if you're able to switch to SSD, as long as you're sticking to the same brand.
hi good day , does the logic board invertor cables have to go back in the same way they came out if so , can you advise how to tell the order they go back in when reassembling it would help alot
Hey there iFixit peeps! I have a legitimate and dire question to ask of you. I have a 2008 iMac 2.66 Ghz 20" Model A1224 that I absolutely adore because it has never failed me. I do lots of Photoshop & Lightroom malarkey and I'm considering an SSD upgrade. My question is: Which one should I get? The good folks at OWC has an Extreme 6G version and a 3G affordable version. Could my iMac take advantage of the Extreme 6G speeds? Isn't it a SATA II device? Is the 3G good enough? Help. Thanks!
I recently came across the shell of a late 2007 iMac it has no hard drive therefore no operating system and I was wondering if I can use my MacBook operating system on this particular new hard drive I have to buy. And if I can use my MacBook operating system what is the best way to transfer the information? Before or after I install the hard drive and will superduper work with that process?
So if I'm putting a new hard drive in an imac i bought second hand BECAUSE their hard drive was bad, im now the owner of a faulty imac needing a hard-drive, when i power on the imac after installation of the hard-drive will it auto install windows or will i some how need a fresh copy or purchase it again? I've never owned an apple product, not sure of how their stuff works. Thank you.
Four Observations: 1) Hack tip: Use a car GPS windshield suction cup if you do not have heavy duty suction cups. A locking mechanism helps. 2) Why the hell can't Apple make some type of access door to access the HD??? What a pain in the ass! 3) I was able to lift the LCD enough to access the HD without having to disconnect the ribbon cable. I only disconnected that first cable. 4) This beautiful woman could read the phone book and I would watch that video. Thanks for the clear instructional video!
"just buy a new one" is definitely a convenient fringe effect of their designs. in my opinion the reason theyre so difficult to repair is because they are obsessed with aesthetics. they would rather engineer & produce an entirely new and awkward way to take their machines apart than have a row of screws showing.
Very good. This is a thorough, clear tutorial. I'm glad you mentioned not to unplug by the cord, and to wipe the screen before reinstalling it. Thanks. :)
Hey do you have any how to videos on how to replace the sata data cable?? I seen on your app that you have a step by step tutorial on replacing the sata data cable but there's parts when unscrewing the logic board that kinda confuse me :( And do you have sata data cables to buy on your site? I'm not too sure what type of cable to buy... Please respond.. Thanks
True. But the sensors give it a 1up over windows, oh yeah I totally forgot. It's made this way to look sleek, compact, and thin lol That was probably foreseen in the R&D department. That stands for Research and Development by the way lol
Thanks for the video here are a couple of notes from my HD to SSD conversion. My Mid 2012 was different, as you noted, it did not have a bezel and there were more cables connecting LCD to MB. However overall it was fairly simple, if you are careful and patient. Recommend a help from someone with a flash light and help holding screen. After you copying you drive (I used free super-duper and a cable $25@BB) if you have MS Office installed it makes you re-key your copy of office. I used the free software utility to change the fan sensor on the HD since its now SSD dont need it and just left the fan sensor cable hanging. Finally it seems like the initial boot is not that fast but performance is better overall. Now I can use the old drive as a backup with a enclosure and USB cable.
Holey moley,. Im certain I plugged that thermo in right but my fan if full blast. UHG! Now I have to do this again. Dust in the screen area took the longest time to remove. OMO!
I have encountered a problem with my IMAC Intel desktop that was purchased at PC world year 2009, it no longer boots pass the white apple logo, tried to boot from apple installation disc thinking I could reload (leopard OS), it went through 80% of the installation and freezes, tried couple of times, but in vain freezes at 80%.I reckon the hard disk is on its last legs. Any advise would be much appreciated.
hello and good day to you. I followed the instructions in your Video and also buy the tools you say. but when you replace the Hard drive and assemble the Imac not turn the screen, if I hear the audio, but does not give me video my Imack is th eSame model you have on Sample ...Plz let me know what it can be
The girl didn't say that the hhd fan will go mad after replacement. The solution that worked for me on both Mac and Boot camp was the app called "Macs Fan Control" by CrystalIDEA
Minbe was differant on the LCD connections. Mine didnt have the inverter cables mine had looks like a ribbon cable plugged directly into the power supply.
As a computer repair shop owner... I can't believe you have to go through all those hoops to replace something as failure-prone as a hard drive... That's just ridiculous.
HCkev It's an all-in-one computer with the screen less than a centimeter away from all of its interior components... Exactly how the hell else would you expect to be able to access the hard drive?
The back could be removable, but that would ruin (to someone) the looks of it. Or it could have a door or doors for swapping ram, hdd etc such as in laptops, but the end result would be the same. I don't know if other AIOs are made differently.
This isn't difficult or insane. A little tedious, to be sure, but not at all hard. A little preparation goes a long way. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the original drive to the new SDD. I spent 10 minutes gathering tools and prepping the work area, and then it took almost exactly 90 minutes from start to finish. It booted promptly from my OWC 480GB drive, and the only un-expected hiccup was re-entering the product key for the MS products. Couldn't be happier.

RealGamerManz I had a retail Snow Leopard disk that I booted off of, you can make your current OS install a bootable USB drive, just google for info

When the screen just popped off my mind was blown...lol
A far cry from the obnoxious glue Apple uses now.

Soft white cotton gloves are a wonderful invention for preventing fingerprints on an LCD screen.
Very Helpful! Was able to remove and replace my busted 2011 iMac 500mb hard drive with a new 1TB. Great tips and good website backup info.

Apple makes it intentionally difficult to repair their machines. Sad but true.
"just buy a new one" is definitely a convenient fringe effect of their designs. in my opinion the reason theyre so difficult to repair is because they are obsessed with aesthetics. they would rather engineer & produce an entirely new and awkward way to take their machines apart than have a row of screws showing.
What a professional presentation !
I've read that yes you can, it just has to be 3GB/s and SATA connector equipped.
Very good. This is a thorough, clear tutorial. I'm glad you mentioned not to unplug by the cord, and to wipe the screen before reinstalling it.
Thanks. :)
I still use my iMac early 2009 in 2024 😊 working great
I heard that the new ivy bridge imacs coming out will be impossible for users to change their hdd's themselves -- got any insight on this?
What will happen if you install another brand hard drive or the SSD instead of the hard drive? will that work? 2011 model. Thanks
Very thorough and complete. Excellent hints and "heads up". Thanks!
I have never seen such an attractive and beautiful technician in all my life

Great video. Only comment is you rush on the unplugging before taking the screen out. I had to pause several times to figure out where those were.
Do you loose any files or anything desktop if you change the hard drive
Happy to oblige
Brilliant tutorial
Actually, WD also uses internal sensor on their sata drives. So, you are not limited to Seagate if your iMac has one originally.
Minbe was differant on the LCD connections. Mine didnt have the inverter cables mine had looks like a ribbon cable plugged directly into the power supply.
I have one of those late 2009 imac. I want to replace hdd with ssd. Are you saying I can't because of the thermal circuit?

Welcome to apple
Fellow business owner here.... I agree... but Im looking for the 2014 model guide... Apple is ridiculous!
I totally agree.
Now Im wondering the same thing. I was going to do the same, switch to a SSd and also got a late 2009.
I used a toilet plunger new of course to lift the screen saved me 14 bucks and it work perfect!
Is it possible to fit an SSD right under the HDD??
Seems there are some space there, so I dont need to remove DVD-rom to do so.
This isn't difficult or insane. A little tedious, to be sure, but not at all hard. A little preparation goes a long way. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the original drive to the new SDD. Can’t find your handy os10 guide on the site. There is one that has a link to Germany no english
Thanks!
@iFixitYourself
could you please send me the specifications of that exact hard drive? like what model..
thank you so much, great video!
Much appreciate the info, Adam. Thank you.
Very informative!
Is there an update for fixing a late 2009 ?
If this person does all of the repair videos I'm going to become a god damned expert.
I like the sneaky eyes look and the Kermee lows
awesome video
hi can you advise me could i replace my hard drive to ssd this way ?
Eres la mejor, thank you
really cool
Really helpful video!!!!
good
Can anybody explain about having to buy the same brand HDD because of the temp sensor? My friend has a A1312 and it looks like it came with a 1TB 7200rpm drive and I was thinking of getting them to pick up a 1TB SSD but form this video it tells me the game the same brand and not type? So i'm not sure how that makes sense? I could understand if I had the make sure it was a regular 7200rpm sata drive but Brand could be a regular drive or ssd so not sure how that makes sense?
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to use external ram?
Brilliant. HDD changed. However, power lead is a 6-pin socket yet there are 8 pins on the WD drive. Help!!!
Thank you.
And what is the maximum amount of RAM that can be placed in this iMac?
Hey Vic,
Yes you can still replace the hdd with an ssd. You're just not going to be able to use the thermal circuit and so your fan is going to always be on running at 100% speed. Yay for fan noise. You'll also want to hunt around for a program that will turn on "Trim" support in the OS. Apple does everything it can to get you to buy a new Mac so Trim is only supported with Apple approved ssd's in the OS without an app to "hack" it. Not a big deal just a few clicks and you're good to go.
What about the newer iMac (edge to edge glass)?
all you need is 1 suction cup that you can get with those OPEN and CLOSED signs, push into top right corner or top left corner, and then pull... so easy... heavy duty suction cups lol... WHY
(( I have repaired at least 500 macs so far so i know ))
Can I install a second SSD on my 2011 27" iMac?
lol before the iFixit tool kit !!!
Thanks
i know it says i have to use the same manufacturer for the hard drive, I have a 1Tb drive that I wish to upgrade to a 3TB, is that possible?
+Jonathan Saucedo No necessary mate. I switched mine with a Samsung SDD disk. No troubles whatsoever. Hope it helps.
+Martin What did you do about the temp sensor?
since installing the new hard drive, my super drive wont let me put CDs in or eject them once I tighten the screws that hold the screen on, and/or put the front cover back on. any ideas why? anyone else have this problem?
anyone else find the way she talks mesmerizing?
t thought that was the isight cable, not the microphone cable?
Can I go from 5400 rpm to 7200 rpm?
And do I have to purchase the operation system, or is there anyway to download it free?
I'd like to know this too. Also can you switch to a ssd
Yes to both questions
Christopher Glaves Thank you
