I do worry for his mental health in all this. We’re all very quick to judge but we’ve all made mistakes some small some huge..world is tough enough so try be kind.

The picture is pretty damning with Gordon smiling. I personally found the image in very bad taste and think Gordon should be banned for bringing the sport into disripute, probably for 6-9 months, maybe longer. However, my real concern is the way this is going to be perceived by those that either dislike racing, or just want it banned will see this as an ideal oppotunity to build up demonstrations again and likely will put a stop to some big profile races.
The really sad thing about this picture is how it has ruined so much good press about how well racehorses are looked after these days and that just about everyone involved in racing stables are there because they love horses.

gordon elliott will have to accept that his licence will be revoked for quite sometime. if at sometime he will want to return i think he must be allowed to. i dont think you can restrict anybody wishing to ply their trade in any chosen vocation. i also think that legally it may be tricky to ban him forever

Forget racing, in simple terms of humanity those images of Elliott and James are just horrendous. Does anyone believe that every person in every stable is squeaky clean? How many more stories are out there? How many have been buried? The only question regarding timing is why was this footage not exposed at the time? Punishment cannot be seen to be lenient.
Tritonic finished off impressively but was he more impressive than Redicean who won the race a couple of years ago? You would have got pretty long odds on that horse never winning another hurdle race.
Still completely ignoring Bear Ghylls for the Ballymore?

How about those who know Gordon well stick up for him just a little bit.
The picture is horribly damning and I can see why the public outside of racing are appalled. But it seems not only outsiders but also racing fans and people in the industry are satisfied to see this picture in the worst possible light and except no other explanation of intention. Pretty cold.
Surely those in the industry know Gordon and how he treats his horses. Assuming, as I have read no different, that he has successfully managed and taken care of 100's, likely 1000's of horses then we need to frame judgements to include this as well. You don't train a dual GN winner, who also won a triumph at 4 without taking good care of your horses.
Do I think Gordon intimately cared for the horse that died, no not really, but then should I necessarily expect/demand him to. He has 100's of horse in his yard and likely spreads himself thin. His owners, especially the big ones, pay him to win races not to fall in love with their horse. I would expect most large trainers to be relatively cold in general to the individual horse compared to smaller yards. But importantly I don't think Gordon would treat a living horse badly.
Isolated thoughtless momentary errors of this nature don't deserve a punishment of banishment that some are demanding.
So personally whilst I hope Gordon is reprimanded, I hope that he is forgiven and allowed to learn from this and return as a trainer in the near future. I also hope others forgive him and lessen their seeming desire for blood. Hate the Sin, not the Sinner.

This has sent racing back at least 20 years, racing needs to appeal to the wider world and this has done it no favours. The point of this to me is what type of person sits on any animal that has sadly died and poses for a picture , its perverse and tells alot about the character of the man. I love racing but racing needs to grow a bone and condemn the man not just the act.

I run a pub in the uk which with the regulars has through syndication shares in 7 horses, there can be no sitting on the fence with this matter, Gordon Elliott must be held totally responsible for his actions and should be shown no leniency with the punishment, those in racing realise it was a one off and all of the stables that iv'e experienced have always been exemplary in their treatment and care of the horses, those involved in racing should come together and demand a significant ban of several years for Gordon at the very minimum, he should be warned off every racecourse as well for the duration of the ban. Racing can ill afford to let this slip just because of his position as one of the very top trainers and his high profile owners, racing should show the public how these wonderful animals are looked after in other stables to prove that Mr Elliott is a one off and racehorses are looked after very well. In the past trainers have suffered huge bans and fines for stopping horses or jockeys having involvement in unusual betting patterns, this with Gordon Elliott, i feel is far more serious than any of those cases and should have far greater punishment. To finish, i'm disgusted by what has happened and my opinion of this trainer has fallen off a cliff, he has gone from someone i admired as a racehorse trainer to someone i wouldn't let drink in my pub and he would be asked to leave.

Thats why in Ireland things are run differently than Britain, in Ireland its run by horse racing people through and through whereas in Britain, its the do -gooders and the sort, the types that bow down to activists, pc bridgade etc etc. and you get a terribly watered down product as a result, as you can see in television programs, news, talk shows etc, its never ending. One question that as far I can see has not been asked; Who took this photo and how did it get into the public domain? Was it a member of staff? Why would it be released. There is something rotten in the State of Denmark!! It is apparent from the photo that he was aware of it being taken but I am sure he did'nt anticipate it ending up where it did.

I seem to be one of the very few people that thinks this is a massive over reaction. A trainer will treat a horse like a child, Elliot would've been shaken by this event on his gallops and was not thinking clearly. The hand gesture is clearly saying "two mins mate" to someone. I think he needed to address it, explain the context but some big owners put horses with him and have done for long time so there cannot be any question that Gordon Elliot has nothing but the horses welfare at heart.
For Betfair to take the moral high ground (a company that sells gambling) is just a joke and Cheverly Park moving their horses just hinders their chances of winning so close to Cheltenham is a disservice to the racing industry as a whole as Paul Nicolls said earlier its a massive disruption for a horse to change yards.
Hope it blows over but the day n age we live in it will follow him around until he calls it quits which for a great trainer is a great shame.

The other is the story doing the rounds in Co Kildare this morning -- and if we are to believe the story - It's a case of ---
' Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned .'
It seems that one of Mr Elliot's prior lovers - the daughter of very well known Irish Trainer - had this photograph in her possession for some considerable time and decided to release it to do maximum damage to Mr Elliot - some two weeks before Cheltenham .

He’s been set up like a kipper with the other 2 filming it. They are just as bad egging him on and laughing. If his name had been DOCTOR Gordon Elliot and he had been wearing a Stethoscope - and he had been performing open heart surgery on the horse , without an anaesthetic - we all know NOTHING would happen to him .
If he was a JUDGE sitting on the Horse - instead of a trainer - AGAIN nothing would happen .
If he was a member of the CLERGY in the same situation - the same thing .

However he didn’t kill the horse and I don’t think he should be judged on the photo, I wouldn’t say it’s something he does on a regular basis. I honestly think it’s probably his only time he done something stupid like this and I think it’s not a coincidence that the photo was put out two weeks before Cheltenham, nothing would surprise me these days especially after the Charles burns incident recently. I also think the BHA should concentrate on sorting the recent mess there in and leave it to the IHRB to sort it, a lot of big owners that own a lot of good horses in Gordon’s yard will suffer for a stupid decision Gordon made a few years ago, don’t think that’s fair they put a huge amount of money into the game

Racing is united with this issue and Gordon will pay the price, serve his time through a ban. What racing should also add to the case is do not let the person who posted this vile photo get away without punishment.

Well, personally I think he made a mistake and was not thinking. No one is perfect but still, a tacky thing to do. Basically I'd like to know how all these commenters here and on horse racing sites feel about animal abuse by many groups but they are willing to get their pitchforks out for this mistake. Fry him wouldn't be enough, so it seems.

The greyhound industry have paid a terrible price in the uk for breaches of care and scandal, this will yield havoc on the horse racing.

Gordon Elliot picture, I thought before I saw it it was because he'd just lost the horse and sat on it by accident because of loss - but no just shows his character no compassion straddled over it smiling - disgrace , a poor excuse for a man 😡

The healing power of a compassionate mind. Yes what happened is beyond logic or reasoning. But you know gordan elliot climbed to the top by getting every ounce of his average horses back in the day. He achieved that by looking after these equine individuals on a level not seen before. That included meeting every need of the horse. Some will remove their horses but I would ask in as possible a calm light as is possible to present owners to see the remarkable symbiotic relationship he had with his horses over the last decade to include welfare , care, attention to detail, before they decide to remove them. The healing power of a compassionate mind. Reflect before you move.

Is it as bad as punching a horse in the head? Davy Russell seems to be the media’s darling after he did that, maybe Gordon will get to co-host itv racing with Matt champion after this, it’s completely disgusting what he has done but people tend to get past things faster than you think, also his excuse was laughable but that stupid it’s possibly true.

What about Frankie dettori and the drug scandal is he not the media darling now ang the godolphin trainer with the doping of horse's which cost Camelot a triple crown not whole on the racing channel back then about it or from other trainer's that's because he worked for sheikh Mohammed which it will all come out shortly about him we'll see how many presenter's or trainer's will call for his head none they'll be afraid with all the money he puts into English racing hypocrites

@@blairfoley7404 Also N Henderson drugged a horse and let it run,Being one off the old guard it was quickly forgotten. The timing of whoever released this pic tells me Gordon's made a few enemies.

I thinks it’s disgusting. And the video of the jockey doing the same. Makes you wonder how often it happens. Why these pictures and videos that are years old are being released is strange.
I’m disappointed at some pundits and online racing bloggers that have avoided commenting all together . What going on here ? Scared it’ll break links in racing to further there careers ? Gordon will be a target as soon as crowds return. Will never ever ever go away.

Everyone doing a good job of keeping up appearances for the media here. People that work in racing knows what goes on behind the scenes. It doesn’t look good, he’s had a bad moment no doubt but seriously, he didn’t kill the horse. Witch hunt

What a world we live in! So many Men shedding a tear....................its not like GE or the Jockey killed anyone is it? So its given some anti racing "tree huggers" some rocks to throw. Give GE a year off but not for sitting on the beast but for allowing that twat of a jockey to do so. And hand the Jock a Red Card for 3 months then lets move on. There are a lot more things that go on in racing than sitting on a dead horse.............

It's an absolute embarrassment .. in what circumstances can one come to sitting on a dead horse posing like an idiot .. even worse it would appear it's not an isolated incident with Rob James today 😡 ... I would have assumed any normal person would be distraught after losing a horse ... I remember being at fairyhouse when witchita Lineman fell and seen ap sitting on the turf with the horse , he was in bits ....... this shit this week has brought more attention to the sport than Cheltenham will and all of it bad

The photograph was disgusting. Gordon has brought the sport into disrepute in the worst possible manner. But has he committed a criminal act? Has he broke a rule of racing? We must believe that he was not responsible for the death of this horse. What is clear is that there is no cruelty involved or negligence. And what of the low-life that posted the photograph? Why? The damage he has done to the sport is too enormous for him to be punished with a fine. I hope, though, he does not get a ban greater than the one imposed on Charles Byrnes.
