All the "Midnight Special" posts are a treat on YT. What a highlight of the week it must have been back in the day Stateside. We had to rely on "The Old Grey Whistle Test" here in the UK for a well produced format for bands, but it was mostly just in a TV Studio, much prefer an audience in the show.
I was there too John first row, Queen blew them off the stage-sadly for me, a BIG BIG MTH fan. Ian Hunter dragging Areil Bender onstage by his air was friggin weird though wasn't it? Freddie in that black and white skin tight one piece singing "Keep yourself alive keep yourself alive, all you people..."
Mick Ronson wrote many of the songs that were accredited to David Bowie. Mick Ronson arranged for Bowie and played the guitar on those Bowie albums, not Bowie. Mick Ronson was the guitar player for Mott the Hoople, too. Mick Ronson wasn't getting all of the credit from Bowie's record label for it.
I was fortunate to see Mott at the Santa Monica Civic - my 2nd concert (1st was Cal Jam the weekend before, I was 15, ordered not to g, did anyway, and got in BIG trouble. WORTH IT!!). @@milt6208 I've started to lose them 15 years ago...damn it's sad getting old 😮💨😁
God bless MTH, and especially the original members. Love Mick Ralphs and Verden Allen and you can’t get any cooler than Ian. They are a band close to my heart. ❤
A great band. So happy to have seen them at the Uris Theater (opening and closing night), opening act: Queen.
A classic from my youth. Absolutely brilliant.😁
Can really hear the Bowie influence in this era of Mott.
@@jasminestewart2416Well said, I love Ronno! ❤❤❤
They were "all young dudes", if you know what i mean😉
Their best song. And this version completely Rocks!
I was fortunate to see Mott at the Santa Monica Civic - my 2nd concert (1st was Cal Jam the weekend before, I was 15, ordered not to g, did anyway, and got in BIG trouble. WORTH IT!!). They were an INCREDIBLE band, and Ian Hunter one of the greatest front men. Weird they're best known for a Bowie song, though Hunter is an INCREDIBLE song writer and he's STILL doing it.
One of my favorite Mott the Hoople songs from one of their best albums-Mott
What a great performance of a great song.
One of of my favorite songs by my favorite band. Sad that Overend and Dale are gone but Im glad that I got to see them in London in 2009 at their reunion gigs.
A timeless song. Still sounds great to me.
The ultra cool boots the guy is wearing deserves some recognition......Master John use to make those in Toronto back in the 70s ......
I remember seeing MTH on this show as a kid. Made me a Mott/Ian Hunter fan for life. Ampeg City! And a Shure Vocal Master column behind the piano. The great old days! Mid 60s to mid 70s best music ever.
"All the Young Dudes" gets all the credit it deserves but this one is just as good and more fun to hear.
Saw Mott in '72!
Missed them when Queen supported on 73 tour UK ?
My Guild S-100 was made in 1973, just like Ian Hunters!
My first 'good guitar' was a maroon single pickup Guild S-100.
I wish I had kept my 1973 S-100 (oak leaf and acorns carved into it by the factory). Also wish I had kept my Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer pianos from that time. I’m glad I was able to see some of these great British bands live in concert (MTH, ELP, Slade, Wishbone Ash).
Great song, by a great group. This was on their "Mott The Hoople Live"! album.
Juicy juicy Lead Guitar tone !!!!!
🎸❤
this band opened up a whole new world for me in 1973. my intro to english bands.
Saw them on the 1974 tour, Kansas
was backup filling in for Queen that
canceled. Can you imagine Queen
backing up Mott on that tour. I really wanted to see Queen but that was my
introduction to Kansas, Which didn't
disappoint. Mott and Kansas brought
down the house, One of my Top 10
concerts of all time
What a rock n roll SHOWCASES! Keyboards. Ian singin playin! The drummer singin ! Glam rock, velvet goldmine!!!
My favorite tune by Mott. A terrific performance of the song. Too bad Mick Ralphs had left the band by the time of this show.
He did all right -Mick made a small fortune with Bad Co
Ariel Bender had promise, and sometimes sounded really cool (his leads on Golden Age Of Rock'n'Roll were pretty cool, actually) but agreed, he didn't seem to match what Ralphs did with Mott.
Another awesome performance from the archives!!! Thank you Midnight Special!!!
I remember seeing this when it originally aired. If I'm not mistaken, they also played,"Drivin' Sister",which was just as good as this.Mott at their peak.
I was 16 when this came out. Love those boots Overend's wearing.
Many thanks for this post. This is a great, great clip. Mott the Hoople was an insanely underrated band. Soooo much good music.
When music was real! Such a kick ass song and band!
I recognized cosmic greatness the very first time I heard him. ❤
Awesome!
I saw this band at my very first rock concert in Chicago earlier that year when they opened for New Riders of the Purple Sage. Been a big fan for the last 50 years.
What a band! Thanks for unearthing this great video. Ian Hunter ❤
Thanks to an older brother introducing me to Mott the Hoople, been listening to Ian and his various bands since I was 9 or 10, fifty plus years now. One of my top 5 song writers.
Saw Mott in 74, Queen was supposed to open, but May was ill, so Kansas opened. Great show, Auditorium theater Chicago.
When I was a teenager everybody really enjoyed Mott the Hoople I saw them live once
MOTT THE HOOPLE, GREAT BLAST FROM THE PAST!!! M.O'B
Ariel Bender on guitar, replacing Mick Ralphs who left to join Bad Company.
Luther Grovensor from Spooky Tooth . A fine guitar player 😊
a.k.a. Ariel Bender. Luther Grovensor changed his name for contractual reasons, he changed his name to Ariel Bender, at the suggestion of singer-songwriter Lynsey de Paul, for his stint with Mott the Hoople.
@@jimmyleon2983 have you ever seen the documentary called Groupies . Spooky tooth is in there and so is Luther. One of the groupies spent the night with Luther and then she was making fun of his wee wasker . Poor guy . Them groupies sometimes tell all and it ain't pretty 😳
maybe she had a loose lucy 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪
I doubt Johnny "WADD" Holmes could hit the sides of her "Loose Lucy"
Awesome
Got to see Mott sing this in Memphis back then
These guys rock!
I remember running cross country at school with this song in mind, its a great song for cross country running 🎉
Real cool band! Their song "Rock and Roll Queen" is totally awesome!!
Wonderful footage, when Rock was really Rockin'
I got turned onto the song in 7th or 8th grade by another guy in school, and it's stuck with me all these years later. I have it on my phones music file now.
That singer could give Jeff Lynne some competition with that hair. Lol. I like this band. Cool song and outfits!😎
All the Young Dudes was my favorite.
