WW2 in Estonia - 1941
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 лис 2024
- For three and a half months in 1941 Estonia became a battleground between Germany and the Soviet Union. Being on the left flank of the German drive on Leningrad the country became split between the German forces and the Red Army in mid July 1941. After that both sides attempted to capitalize on the limited maneuvering room to encircle and destroy each others forces as Germany attempted to capture the Soviet naval bases in Estonia while Red Army did everything to retain them.
Data from the The National Archives of Estonia was used to create the map.

I laugh every time Eastory says "Towards Tallin" because it sounds like "Towards-Stalin". I imagine Stalin as a city-sized man that Germans try to track down and capture
There used to be a game with a similar theme, "Stalin vs. Martians"

Much longer fight on Sinim"ae hills (Blue Hills) on the Russian-Estonian border near Narva when Russians tried to return back in 1944. One whole Soviet army was wiped out there and the Soviets had to change their strategic planning of the attack on Koenigsberg.

There is actually one abou the Winter War, just search for the 1939 to 1940 Ww2 conflicts (he made the maps while indy Neidell made the speaker)

How do you do research on these? How long do these usually take? Either way, these videos are very well-made and it shows how much hard work you put into them.

“Out of the frying pan and into the fire.” Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Moldova, and Ukraine in WW2.
Edit: Eastern Poland as well.
At least Moldova had friendly Romanian occupation during the war

What does the Ukraine have to do with this? The Ukraine has been an integrate part of Russia for thousand years. Kiev is the mother of Russian cities.
ErmakBrovar Oh, just stop it... ✋
My impression is that Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians were mostly ok with the German occupation...
Having spent the last half year in Estonia I reckon the gent behind Eastory is indeed Estonian. In my humble opinion, it is not only his Estonian accented English ( Latvian and Lithuanian people speak English with a completely different accent) , but his detail and obvious love of telling Estonia's story that clinches it for me. Go Estonia-I know one thing for sure, the people there will not go down without a fight next time. The EDF and the Kaitselit will be waiting for them in the forests, and not just with small arms!
His pronunciation of Estonian places is too good. There is no way he is not from Estonia
He literally has made videos in Estonian. The video about the Estonian war of independence is translated.
@@harnne3733 Yeah if i didnt remember bad he even confirmed to be himself to be estonian, somewhere...
Lavians and Lithuanians are Indoeuropeans, but Estonians no. Latvian and Spanish are mutually more similar languages than Latvian and Estonian.
He has even stated in one of his english videos he's estonian lol.
Very interesting explanation. It turns out that taking Estonia required to Germans eight times more time (4 months) than taking Lithuania and Latvia combined (2 weeks).
Naval operations are hard.
@@jurisprudens The continental part took 2 months.
In Estonia, the Soviets even managed to counterattack the Germans. In Lithuania and Latvia, they were still under confusion of the unexpected German attack on the USSR.
Lithuania and Latvia were attacked with ~25 Divisions. Estonina was attacked with 2 Divisions. ;)
The consequences of underestimating the enemy

Sir, your work is simply amazing! I'm your fan! :) greetings from Brazil.
The videos are the best out there in terms of troop movement. Great video!
Hey, could you please cover the fighting in the memel region. I'm working on transcribing the memoires of a german soldier who fought there (jan 1945) and I have a hard time understanding where exactly he fought. Your videos make it easy to understand. Thanks!!
That sounds like an important and interesting task you've got there, one I wish I had the privelige of undertaking myself. That said - the chapter on Memel in Forgotten Soldier (Guy Sajer) was the most grim, heart-breaking & gut-wrenching one in a memoir that was mostly pretty rough and bleak (yet, compelling and fascinating..)
I understand what you mean but you've got to be realistic, he won't make a whole video for one person considering how much effort Eastory has to do
Estonian in 1941: So we are free now?
German: Well yes, but actually, no.
More free than with the soviets tho
Germany: More like under new management.
@@f0nt Well I'm afraid it's more complicated than that.
@@HeroHoundoom Alright, why is it so "complicated" then ? Did the germans send thousands of people to siberia ? No. Did germans let us atleast use our national flag ? Yes. Did Soviets ? Yes to first and No to second. Tell me why do you think its complicated.
