    Nice video! I live in Northern Germany and was in Wetzlar twice as a stop over on my way to Italy. It is an amazing company and it is definitely worth a visit. For the saltwater problem I think the best is to take out your batteries asap and put the electronic device in tap water then in distilled water. The corrosion will stop as there are no electrolytes in the water. Repeat this and rinse everything properly. The clean distilled water will not harm the electronics. Then take it out and dry it for a couple of days. If you are lucky everything works fine again.
    This actually happened to a colleague of mine. Some burglars broke into our research institute and they stole an expensive oscilloscope. Half a year later my colleague found this oscilloscope by pure chance at the bottom of our little pond under ice because of the orange color. The burglar must have dropped it there because it was too heavy. My colleague rescued it: he cleaned it, put it in distilled water and rinsed it thoroughly , dried it and voila, it worked again.

    I’m not surprised with the info you shared. “Back in the day”, many moons ago etc, most of my photography mentors encouraged purchasing multiple camera bodies in order to diminish risk of cancellation of jobs. 1 body in use; 1 body in transition; and 1 body in the shop was the expectation in my workdays. Skilled support technicians are always appreciated, imo!

      this is a big positive for choosing the M11 since, if they are often in service, then you only have one to shoot with. If you’re down to just one camera the M11 is the only one with dual storage

    Nice that you were also in Wetzlar, I haven't had the opportunity yet. but if it comes up, I will of course make a visit and I'm really looking forward to it.👌 Hopefully soon-😉 I can imagine it or you read a lot that you have to wait a long time. Especially with the old M, but this means you have another piece of technology that will hopefully do its job again for years, whether as a collector or user. I prefer to use them and enjoy the results and pictures👍na I'm looking forward to the next video from Wetzlar that you will show us.

I hope you get it resolved soon. (Perhaps ask about buying a newer model instead if they can't fix it and get discount off the next one). The shop I bought from tried to do this with me and my M10 but I said no as prices had increased so it was worth more than a refund and rebuying.

We have extremely high customer satisfaction and in fact, after 50 years, only just started advertising a bit to test the waters. But once in a while a problem gets through. As soon as we hear about it, we take care of it, making our customers even happier. We ALSO charge a premium, and people recognize the value anyway. I believe in that way we are like Leica. We can only read a dubious distilling series of complaints here, but there are infinite more people who could also share how high quality and professional all the repair process was. Great video, but in the end you did not say why the wait is so long for repair. You gave some reasons, like 100 repair packages per day and 40 technicians and mechanical camera repairs being more complex, etc. However, the obvious reason is they do not employ nearly enough technicians to handle the job. They need to clear out the backlog and then maintain a wait of no more than 1-week. Anything more for such an expensive instrument is outrageous. To put this in perspective, Canon in the US typically gives a repair estimate within 1 to 2 days after a broken camera arrives. The owner is notified of the estimate immediately and once the owner approves the estimate (typically the same day) the camera is shipped back to the owner by fast mail. This entire process typically takes a week or less (that's right, the camera is back in the owner's hands within a week of sending it off in the mail). Sony and Nikon are not nearly as good, but the Canon service model is what we should all expect. Oh, one more thing...Canon service is cheap. The last camera I sent in for repair needed a new shutter and the sensor looked at. This 5DM2 camera is used in research and the shutter failed after many many millions of exposures and I was also concerned the sensor might have been damaged by high power laser flash (part of the experimental apparatus). In the end, the shutter was replaced and the sensor remapped and I think the repair came to $250 with shipping and back in my hands in less than a week. Unbelievable.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  Місяць тому

      Yes to recap the reason for the long wait IS the backlog. They can't clear that so every new job backs up.

    Absolutely ridiculous turn around times. I know of several photographers here in Australia, totally bailed out from Leica, because they were trying to run a business, and then their camera would disappear off into the dark rabbit-hole of repairs in Germany, not to see the light of day for a long time. It would be akin to buying a Ferrari for 250K, then being told you have to wait three months for a service. All I ever hear in Leica vs anybody videos is how Leica is better built than every other camera. So why are their cameras constantly being sent in for repairs if they’re built so well? I would dig a Leica digital camera (but not their stupid bottom-loading film cameras), but it’s such a steep price for something that seems like it’ll eventually need repairs. If they’re going to charge so much, they should build something that actually lasts.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  Місяць тому +1

      Thanks Frank, the fact is they do last seemingly forever (like my various 1930s models) but you will need to service them. Most Leica are rangefinders so many of those will be coming in for calibration issues. Yes they are built like tanks but if you drop them you need to realign the RF inside.

      @FrankGrauStudio Місяць тому +1

      @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I obviously wouldn’t fault Leica if people drop a camera or misuse it. But I’m curious how many cameras are sent in for repairs because of user error verses regular servicing verses design flaws. I’d be interested in a video where you walk us through what kind of regular servicing is required so that potential buyers have an idea of what they’re getting themselves into. I have an old Canon 50D that still works like a champ and has never needed servicing, nor has it ever occurred to me that it might ever need servicing (so long as I don’t drop it or misuse it). I suppose I expected the same kind of build from a Leica, at least from their digital cameras which have far less moving parts. With film cameras I can see where all those moving parts would eventually wear and require servicing. Again, I wouldn’t look at that kind of wear as a design flaw (though I don’t know why Leica stuck with fabric shutter curtains while Canon and Nikon went to using far more durable metal). I still think Leicas are beautiful and all, but for the price, I just wish they were more reliable.

    My first camera was a Leica M3 in sad shape. My father got it from a German friend of his. The prism was very dim. So in 1970-71 I asked a friend who had a car if he would go on a short trip to New Jersey to the Leica facility there to ask them what they could do with the M3. We lived in Westchester County New York so it wasn't a long trip.
    I handed the receptionist the camera and a technician came and got it. A little while later he came out and said the prism was covered in some sort of fungus and would cost about $200 to fix it. That's about $1,300 in 2024 but I was but a poor high schooler back then. My father didn't have or want to pay for it either so I traded it in for a Canon Canonet QL17 GIII.

    Matt ; what Nicholas is addressing is simply " human muscle memory " the ear , eyes , and hands are of a UNIT and this UNIT must work cohesively , what this means is with our sweet fetishization of the instant , we have foregone the knowledge and innate skill of the human element that can produce the same results as a digital camera but in a much different way , film has grain it is not as flexible as the " I want it now " Digital. Strengths and weakness , I have fallen out of love , with digital. The snick , smooth crank , and even the focusing in the MA and M3 range finder , the glowing saturated depth of the Rollei Fresnel ... glowing light , these are the " muscle memory " systems of the human being .
    What is important ? this depends. Models want now , paying customers want now ....but a person who loves the glow of Art , and yeah struggles of film ... it is a struggle at times ...
    Well ; you have to decide or combine. I have combined the SL3 with my beloved film cameras and yet at the same time cannot divorce myself from the perhaps limiting , but liberating feel of the organic. There is so much more in this living in light , than the models we all desire and thrill at , there is an inner peace a place , and nothing can enter this private garden of light. I sold a 2003 Nikon 200-400mm f4 lens to a sports photographer because he had the exact same lens develop a problem and Nikon refused to service it and you can't buy parts for it. A very informative video, thank you.
    I haven’t got a Leica, but of course I aspire to own one, I watch your channel because it’s interesting.
    But another thing people need to realise, the two year warranty that comes with a new Leica in the UK is NOT transferable. So if I wanted to buy a used Leica, say a Q3 that’s maybe 6 months old, the only warranty you get is with the reseller or if you buy privately you’ve zero warranty, even though there’s technically 18 months warranty left. Imagine if car makers did this?
    I know people who have waited 4/5 months to get their relatively new Leica repaired, it’s pretty disgusting.

      When I asked I was told the remaining warranty is passed to the new user (from a private sale on an M at least). The extended year didn' pass on. Leica then confirmed it with me prior to purchase.
      Bit in any case you basically lose a large part of your warranty with it sitting at repair if anything goes wrong with it. Shocking the situation exists in the first place but even more shocking they dont extend it to compensate

Not enough customer service centers and personnel to cope with the demand. 3 years apprenticeship to become specialized technician is btw normal in Germany since they have to spend 50% of their apprenticeship time in school outside of work. Glad that there are third party repair shops in the US for film-based Leica M cameras. Turn-around time was often less than 4 weeks from my experience. Possibly Leica cameras are good and possibly also the lenses. The prices are absurdly high.
    But how useful is the promise of quality if the service works at the speed of a snail?
    Leica products are not tools for photographers but lifestyle products for people who have a lot of money and don't take pictures. And Leicas that stand in a display case and are occasionally dusted off are not sent in for servicing.
    From my personal point of view, everything that shows the Leica logo has one of the worst price-performance ratios.
    Any other company with such a service offer for photographers would have no chance of survival. But there are people who don't take photos and want to afford it.
    For me, that is unacceptable. I give my money to a company that offers good value for money with very competitive photographic equipment and good service. If something needs to be repaired, I get it back within a week.
