Crazy thinking about it. Flylo, Thundercat, madlib, DOOM, Adult Swim. That was a whole era. Thundercat is one of the best bassists and Flylo set a new standard in production.
back in the 2000's and early 2010's i was super proud to be able to say Adult Swim came from my city - Atlanta. discovered so many cool artists from the bumps being played during commercial breaks, not to mention the shows themselves that were often written and produced here. it seems like most of that has moved out west to LA with the various mergerz and acquisitionz of turner's networks. williams street is a shell of its former self.
I thought the Captain Murphy stuff was so much fun too. The short film they made as a music video for Duality was one of the most incredible videos I've seen. Unfortunately, UA-cam are babies about the nudity featured in it, so its existence on UA-cam is sporadic. Vimeo has it.
MF DOOM and Madlib were an era before Flying Lotus and Thundercat. Flying Lotus was more the begining of the Low End Theory LA Beat scene with Ras G, Nosaj Thing, Teebs, Jonwayne, Dibiase etc. They were all influenced by Dilla and Madlib though.
I'm fans of them both but I've never heard this song before. After just listening I can confirm . . . they were both right 😆 It's impossible to even clap along to this song.
Dance of the Pseudo Nymph is one of my fav Flylo songs. I remember hearing it for the first time in 2013 and it blew my mind. I always loved the rhythm and feel of that song
It lines up if you count in 5s. But if you start counting in 4s after counting in 5s for 5 bars, it also lines up... So my guess is that he wanted him to record a bassline that was really in 4/4, but when played over a 5/4 beat you get a phasing feel similar to Steve Reich's Clapping Music, because the bass keeps starting on different beats of the bar
I've had that same kind of experience with a guitarist who was generally very good, but we were playing something that was a lot simpler that made me REALLY go 'how tf is this guy so skilled in some ways but can't count eight beats accurately or tell me that it's actually nine or there's an improvised hold-moment or something'. Side note, Thundercat seems as charming as he is talented.
Lmao I always thought the song was a little hard to follow. I hear it and I'm like let me take my simple ass back to Do The Astral Plane. Amazing album though.
Lmaooo, I watched the whole video and got so enraptured by the storytelling that, by the end, I forgot he’d already said the song name. Was searching through the comments trying to figure out what it’s called, and then when I spotted it, I was immediately like, “Oh yeah, he said that.” 💀

the era that inspired me to start producing
we’re in a new era but we’re still here and we still remember.

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN CONFUSED ABOUT WHERE THE 1 IS SUPPOSED TO BE IN THIS SONG!!!!!!!! LIKE FOR A DECADE!!!!! THIS MAKES SO MUCH SENSE NOW
I don't get it, i hear the 1 in the first beat, where else could it be?
At least in the main bass line, then it gets really confusing 😅
@@BernardoPadua1 There's parts of the song where it stops on the 3 at times. It's such an odd timed song but it's such a banger though.
@@lxrdoxCool! It sure is man, I love cosmogramma as a whole. This backstory makes this song even better hahaha
What are you sayin I still don't know where the 1 is supposed to be!!!
Still bumping cosmogramma in 2024
It’s timeless. It was born in the past but remains in the future.
WTF, I hadn't seen Thundercat for a minute, damn he's looking great!
he actually wizzed on me mama somehow
That sounds like a Key & Peele sketch🤣 'Thundercat: But I ask again.... why?!'
I'm fans of them both but I've never heard this song before. After just listening I can confirm . . . they were both right 😆 It's impossible to even clap along to this song.
I thought it was double tracked. Its such an experimental album you think this type of timing was on purpose.
It’s unbearable, such a bad song.
@@Gen7486you have no soul
Very easy; just do every time of like 150 bpm
It’s one of my favorite songs off the album 🤷🏿♂️
Dance of the Pseudo Nymph is one of my fav Flylo songs. I remember hearing it for the first time in 2013 and it blew my mind. I always loved the rhythm and feel of that song
This is actually one of my favorites from them too. 😂😂😂 It's basically jazz at that point because the bass falls on different times.
So reassuring that these seasoned pros have this problem
Cat and Lotus are really 2 of the greatest of our time.
Indeed
easily
We are blessed
Flylo's timing cannot be quantized
After listening to the song I get it 😂
Love the Steely Dan shirt. Man has taste.
You can’t have imagined this would be a total surprise lol
Music theory is just a theory of thought
One of my favorites from the album dawg
I presume the Chris they are referring to is drummer Chris Dave.
Crazy!!! I’ve always loved that song for how funky cat’s line is and metallic his bass sounds.

Some polyrhythm type shit
@@JacowateHamaeran I think this would actually be a called a polymetre, because it's the bar sizes that differ
@@JacowateHamaeran you are wrong
One of my favorite songs 😍
I'll never forget showing my dad dance of the pseudo nymph
Thundercat got that neckbridgin/death metal growler neck
Grabbed this record on vinyl when it came out, I'll have to go listen to it again.
First time I heard it I was confused by the meter too.
That is such a good interview, great video. Crazy that even the very best have these kind of misunderstandings
This is actually hilarious. I recorded a Nirvana cover with my old band and we all heard the count different
This some real shit
makes so much sense. i’ve always loved this song but initially listening to it i always mentally started on the wrong count
I hate myself with a passion for being so late to this podcast. Holy shit, this is amazing lmao.
I love that song

chris dave impressions are fucking hilarious @ 4:17
Lmao I always thought the song was a little hard to follow. I hear it and I'm like let me take my simple ass back to Do The Astral Plane. Amazing album though.
Thundercat literally fucking quoting Cartman is indescribably hilarious to me.
Yoo.. I didn't recognize him until he started laughing, lol.
Every bar of that song, the one ends up in a different place I swear
Need to know what glasses those are
I don't know why i procrastinated on watching this video because I fucking love Dance of the Pseudo Nymphs but yeah this is is crazy
wowwwww this is hilarious they made such a perfect song
What’s crazy is I sampled the song now I’m tryna figure out whose 1 I heard flylo or cat
I get this shit with birdland… i know the hi hats are on the upbeats but i cant not hear it as downbeats
Gratitude for sharing
Now im curious how they both counted it. There's a little video idea for musician youtubers
It was Jerome and Morris. The Kid was too tortured to engage in that kinda shenanigans.🤓
idk. I like huskier Cat.. but.. health is wealth.
Bro lost a lot of weight hope he's good ❤
he stopped drinking i think a few years ago he's been looking great since about 2021
Legendary
Okazaki/Weiss 🔥
Did bro lose weight?
he stopped drinking so much when Mac passed.
He been lost weight since the DragonBall Durag video.
i said why is daniel caesar talking to mike Beasley
Which Chris are they talking about
Chris Dave?
Could only be Chris Dave lol
Ah, I can hear the 1 either on the first shaker hit or on the e-piano(?) chord.
Why does Thundercat have that Forest Whitaker eye going on in the thumbnail lol
It all makes sense now, this song made me angry to mix it sometimes so I just let fx take over
which song is he talking about? trying to see if I am from thundercat-world or planet flylo :D
Dance of the psuedo nymph off of flylo’s cosmogramma
Bro he said the title in the first 5 seconds of the video lol. Do you just read the thumbnails?? Haha
Please make sure to listen to the entirety of this album
0:10 did u bother even watching it
Lmaooo, I watched the whole video and got so enraptured by the storytelling that, by the end, I forgot he’d already said the song name. Was searching through the comments trying to figure out what it’s called, and then when I spotted it, I was immediately like, “Oh yeah, he said that.” 💀
I never even thought about it till now, and now the song is ruined
😭😭😭
Where is the video of them finding out they counted it differently?
my favorite fucking song on cosmogramma
Is that Thundercat????? Did he lose a bunch of weight or something?
Maybe ozempic?
Bro i got this dude mixed up with Dj Battlecat lol
He stopped drinking, so yeah I think so
@@andyhamlin584 Probably not. He was losing weight before 2020.
He said in interviews that he quit drinking, changed his diet to vegan and started kickboxing and taking care of his health after Mac died.
LMAO!
That mic looks fake
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
He’s one of the worst storytellers of all time… every other word is “like” 🙄 guy chats like a teenage girl.
He's a musician. Storytelling is not his forte. Have some respect.
I personally loved the story and the way he told it.. I wasn’t hyper-focused on the usage of the word “like”
Nah I agree, we missed damn near half the story😂
