Vegetable Farming in Zambia: Sowing, Growing and First Harvest of our Cucumber Crop on Riverside 4
Вставка

- Cucumbers are one of those fruits that are often considered vegetables. This is the origin story of how we planted and nurtured a crop on our Riverside 4 Field at Winterthorn.
Starting with the preparation of beds, we detail how the drip tapes are laid out, how the seeds were sown, and share the various steps in crop husbandry up to the first of many harvests.
Great video, I'm a agriculture student from Liberia and I'm about to start a cucumber production. This video is very informative 🙏🏾🙏🏾
That's great to hear.

From Malawi
Thanks. Pls check for pricing and availability of such tools with your local agro-equipment suppliers.
Thanks very educative
You are welcome
Very informative
Glad it was helpful!
It is laid out very well and neat. The patience with the seed planting was brilliant. I shall subscribe and see how this comes along. Thank you regarding the fertiliser, can I ask why you use pellets instead of liquid.
Thank you for sharing. This is caring.
P.E.A.C.E
Thanks for the sub! In countries like our, granular fertilizer is still predominant and people are only just getting to appreciate the benefits of liquid fertiliser. I just did a video the other week about how we have installed fertigation at our farm.
Good morning 🙏 from Midrand..
Hi there. Pls can you get in touch with me via WhatsApp.
I'm Peter Bwalya from Kitwe, I have learned alot from you sir and may God bless you more and more. My question is, for how long does one cucumber plant keep producing?
The production cycle of fruiting vegetables like cucumber can last for several months depending on various factors.
Weather
Watering
Fertilisation
Pest and disese management
good work sir keep it up
Thanks and welcome
This channel is superb. It's really inspiring and gives me the energy to do this! Why go to the School of Agriculture when I have this channel?
Thanks Ba Chibaala. We are humbled.
Indeed, it is possible to get by what we learn here on the university of UA-cam, but formal training is also important for success in modern agriculture. Our farms have greatly benefited for having a farm manager who is graduate of NRDC.
Please check out our latest video ua-cam.com/video/n-NTtjLvo1k/v-deo.html to see him in action passing on some of his know-how to team members.
Nice one Sir
Many thanks
Following and Learning
Thanks
Great work and well documented. did u think of spaying insecticides at night when they are most active instead of during the day?
i cant wait for the last video on yielding attained
That would be a great idea. But sadly, spraying at night is quite logistically difficult and expensive. Overtime for the workers
That is why farmers are advised to spray for insects in the late afternoon or early evening. That has been effect for us.
Brother Chisha thank you for posting this, it’s inspirational. Quick question, how much did it cost to plant the cucumbers, and what’s the return per bag harvested?
Thanks. This channel is more aboit sharing our farming journey and experiences than about giving such mumbers. In fact, you never hear us share detailed numbers on any of our videos. I'm sure other channels do that.
We are a professional business and do not see an advantage to ourselves in sharing proprietary information on social media.
Good 👍🏽 👍🏽
Thanks for the visit
impressive am going to try grow cucummbers my self
Thanks and all the best
Fantastic weed management and control. I wonder the cost of labour...
Greetings from Nigeria
Fortunately, labour cost isn't a very major factor for us.
After starting out with piecework people, we then moved onto have staff that are full time employed.
This has helped a lot because they get to do a lot of work each month and give us value for money.
Wr also fund that their productivity improves all the time as we train them, meaning that the time taken per job improves, as well as the quality of their work each time.
We also have strong supervisors on each farm to keep the workers moving.
With all those insecticides you have applied do u have bees? What pollinates your flowers
For whatever reason, pollination has never been an issue for our crops.
good guys
Thanks
Is nice. Please which week suitable to first apply fungicide
Thanks for watching and engaging. We don't really give that kind of advice, as our channel is about our farming journey and experiences. I suggest, you consult an agronomist for advice.
You should start training us mwandi this is wonderful looking forward for training
We hear you and have been thinking about that. Meanwhile, we hope our videos can offer some guidance and a kind of remote training.
I have learned from the video
Great!
impressive
Thanks
I am impressed, can you send me a comprehensive details on how to plant Cucumber from beginning to harvest and tomatoes as well. Thanks.
Hi Francis. sadly, that kind of thing s not what the Mondo Farms Channel is about.
But there are plenty of other videos on UA-cam showing such details. Many are made by seed companies, chemical companies, fertilizer companies, and some agronomists.
Our channel is more about sharing our farming journey in a broad sense, rather than teaching people how to farm.
Thanks
Welcome
Great project! Wondering tho if the use of chemicals is not too excessive, can we not find natural alternatives? Are these safe for handling by hand with no protective gear? Just wondering and caring for our well-being.
Yes we will look into it.
Wow very detailed, you have a subscribe already. Please can you share more info on how you water or irrigation and staking. Thanks
You're most welcome.
goood
Thanks 😊
Nice, but how many bags do you make per harvest. It is over 150 bags per harvest or more
Hi Made in Nigeria.
Please have a read of previous comments on how we handle issues of publishing such numbers on social media as a business.
Take care and thanks for watching.
what type of chemicals did u apply, and the timing for both fertiliser and chemicals
Hi Ezekiel. Welcome to the channel, which is about sharing our farming journey and inspiring others.
As you watch more of our videos, you will see that we rarely, if ever, get into such technical details.
There's plenty of other videos on UA-cam that cover the content you are asking about, and we didn't want to go that route. There are also a lot of resources available on the internet, such as crop planting guides from seed companies, NGOs, etc, that I found and downloaded when I was at your stage.
Finally, we always recommend engaging the services of a good Agronomist when venturing into crop farming. Most seed and fwriliser companies employ them, and they guide and advise farmers, visit farms, etc
All the best with your farming.
What is the farm size used? Can 100ftx50ft size of land yield how many bags?
Pls get advice from an expert close to you.
Successful farming requires input of time effort into research and learning.
What did you use on the soil before planting
Hi there. That video was quite a while ago and its hard to recall the details.
We show a lot of our field preps in other videos.
Pls watch the feature we did in eggplant.
So beautiful c
Thank you! Cheers!
Please for God's sake, how did you mange weeds before planting. I see the field is still clean after 2 weeks. Help a brother. I struggle with weeds a lot
We make weeding part of our regular work.
As we train and guide the staff, we emphasize what weeds are and how they affect the crops by reducing yields.
Over time, it has become part of our culture.
Wauh
🙏🏽🙏🏽
May I suggest investing in "ifs Bala Bala" for your employees as they weed out the field to protect their backs in the long term? They can just sit and roll along the mputas . You can buy ifi Bala Kuma compounds for K50 from kids that make them using coils as wheels, or you can make them yourself.
Thanks
I'm really learning a lot.....
Can someone use waste bottle drip irrigation system for such crops.
Watching you from Zimba southern province
Thanks Ba Mweemba. Good to have you join our channel.
Yes, I suppose any kind of irrigation would be possible. it just depends on the size and scale of the crop you are growing. For anything reasonably sized for sale to customers, it would become too much work refilling the bottles.
There is a reason why drip is the most used irrigation system in vegetable farming....
Greetings from Antigua and Barbuda. What are the trellises made of?
Hi there. We just buy local poles from our timber market.
Not sure of the type of wood. Like most market purchases, sometimes they are good, other times, not so much. We once got a batch that was very, very susceptible to wood boring insects.
In our Cucumber 2022 Update 2 video, we show how we started to dip them in insecticide to prolong their useful life.
@@mondofarms4343 much thanks. I am a small farmer _ just over quarter acre, but like you I farm high value crops such as broccoli, cauliflower, turnips, specialty tomatoes, snow peas, snap peas and leeks. Radishes grow well here in Antigua and make an excellent cash crop for me. I also specialize in leafy veg such as kale, chard and Arugula.
Since I am on a small Plot, I go for crops which I can either continously harvest, eg kale or crops which allow me to sell the leaves as greens while waiting for the roots to mature.
BTW, Your videos are very informative and well put together. Thank you for sharing and bringing along others.
I want to visit this place
Thanks. We don't welcome visitors too often because it affects our ability to meet our targets. You can just imagine how many requests we receive on a regular basis.
Pls look out for the Farmers Field Days that we have started to hold. They are well advertised.
We had our first ever one on Nov 25 at Kimberley with Holland Greentech, and will surely hold one or two more next year.
They allow us to have visitors around the farm in a structured and timely manner.
can you share feeback on the harvests from this cucumber project? i would love to hear your detail analysis on the results and average yield per acre
Thanks, Ole. Interesting question.
If you watch more of our videos, you will see that our UA-cam channel is more about sharing our farm journey and teaching and guiding others.
As a formal business with owners, bankers, and other stakeholders, we dont feel it appropriate to publish our business facya and figures in social media.
There are others who will share such data, but we don't.
Take care.
Good evening sir how is it that when I harvest my cucumber once nearly all the leaves becomes yellowish
Please kindly help me
Hi there. I'm so sorry to hear that.
Sadly, it's difficult to give detailed and accurate advice from just your description.
As I have been saying in a lot of our videos, it is essential to engage an agronomist if you want to do crop farming successfully.
what is your yield/ha?
and what is the current price of cucumber in your city? ( i mean your price to a wholesaler/retails, etc)
Our strategy is not to share to the general public the financial details of our business.
We focus on sharing the story of how grow our crops, etc. Other channels may provide the kind-of details you are looking for.
All the best
Mondo Farm, continue the good work and know that you are inspiring many.
What is the size of the land you planted cucumbers?
Sorry, I would have to look up the records to be exact, but that block of cucumbers was about 30m by 25m
@@mondofarms4343 Mondo farm, i intend to start a business with this culture, i would like to know what is the amount of seed needed for an area of 1 hectare,? I'm having difficulties determining ,Watching from Mozambique
Where do you get these sprayer to buy
Various suppliers sell them. We mentioned where we procure ours in the video we did on venturi fertigation.
all the best.
The background beat sounds like Joel Chibangu production. No doubt it has to be Mondo Music sound.
I want to grow like this but at a smaller scale
All the best
This is great, thanks for sharing the knowledge. I am starting a small farm in Botswana and would really appreciate your mentorship, how do I contact you sir?
if you need to get in touch, our contacts are available on Google and Facebook.
How mach place do we need to be suceesful in vegtable product
Hi there. That is an impossible question for me to answer, as it depends on so many variables.
For example, which vegetable you are growing, how much space it takes up, market prices, input costs, whether it is a fruiting vegetable like tomato,or cucumber that you ca harvest several times, or a leaf or root vegetable that you can only harvest once, etc
My advice is to be more specific about certain vegetables and then find someone to help with budgets for each type.
Good Luck.
