I was a member of Marsudi Raras (1993-1994) and I remember that this (Asmaradana) was one of our favourite tunes. No rehearsal was complete without Ladrang Asmaranda, it seems. Francis (kenong) and I used to sing the gerong.
Wonderful. I am a Javanese gamelan player and I am aware of the subtle difficulties in playing harmonious gamelan especially the tricky instruments like kendang, gender and gambang. I am impressed how you guys can master the instruments. I miss the "Anjasmara arimami ..." in this clip. Thanks for posting.
There are recordings from the 1930s of Nyi Bei Mardusari which are quite interesting (coincidentally the gamelan group she sings with is also called Marsudi Raras).
Remen sanget nggih mirengaken Gamelan Jawi wonten in monco nagari (It is fun, isn't it, to listen to Javanese Gamelan while living in a foreign country = Senang sekali ya mendengarkan Gamelan Jawa sementara di luar negeri).
It is astonishing how from birth the majority of us are raised within our cultures listening to a certain genre/style/type of music with idiosyncratic structures/rules and then when we experience music from other cultures around the world, our minds, being used to only our own culture's music, dismiss what we hear as not music, when it most definitely is. I'm just saying, I'm taking an ethnomusicology class, and it has opened my eyes to just how incredibly varied the music of the world is.
Marilah kita Indonesian citizen utk sadar akan budaya kita sendiri, mari kita lestarikan dg memberikan motivasi kpd anak2 kita minimal mengenal gamelan.
You want it more? Please open my youtube account (key word: dwija laras SMPN 6 Kediri). Many title of song in some kinds of gending, such as Lancaran, Ketawang, Ladrang, Palaran and Langgam were played by my students of SMPN 6 Kota Kediri (sixth yunior high school of Kediri city) enjoyfully. I have uploaded more than 70 videos since three years ago. Some of them were played by teachers of the school.
I'd say this is a pretty strong argument for it not being lost, pre-internet how many people do you think knew about this type of music. It was available to some extent as I know of a few groups like king crimson that have had some influence from this style of music, but I would argue that it is much more accessible now than before. I would be about four fewer in my number of compositions if not for the internet allowing me to really discover and experience this music.
I am malaysian. For me Malays is getting all those indonesian culture and remix it and call it as malay's. However we, the Dayaks do have our own culture shared with those indo from Kalimantan and always have deep respect for our counterpart from kalimantan and acknowledge that we are part of nomad group of natives who wonder around Borneo before the forming of a Nation.
You can get the higher quality sound files from our web site (Marsudi Raras). The main problem in recording was the museum setting of our 100-yr old gamelan, I have really good gamelan recording from others.
I agree with you. It will be develop as soon as possible as "The Art of Self-Defense", and "The Art of Never Been Sins" I am sorry, I will support you that the art is the art as the independence's field and the audience was the intellectual-duder of art-perfomance.
I'm sorry about my comment earlier. I really didn't want to spam the page nor be mean, I just felt that the person who commented about this "not being art" was being unreasonably cruel and not thinking of music with an open mind. Everyone has their own interpretation of what art is-mine is that anything can be an art form, provided it is in fact an expression or impression of something.
so if I told 99% of you that a white kid made this in Ohio you would think it was garbage (which it is) but since it was made in Indonesia everyone here is calling it beautiful what a culture! ( I love foreign music but this sounds like a preschool class was let loose in the music room)
kalian ini yg orang orang Pribumi masa nggak malu sih..(termasuk gw maksudnya) masa kesenian kita yg mbawain orang Bule.. malu dong.. tunjukkan dong ma Bule, bahwasanya kita juga masih perduli dgn kebudaya'an kita..
Hey, PUNK-DUDE or sound-silly UNDERWEAR METAL-DUDE's things, It's for ETHNICOLOGY to appreciate rather than "head-banker" or "head-banger" politician-actor *mripat e belekan apa ya*
WHY DOES MALAYSIA KEEP SAYING WE COPIED THEM! I seriously can't stand that. The language we speak was founded on the Island of Riau in Indonesia. Apaan sih kenapa harus bratam. Indonesia has its own culture period and so does Malaysia though not as diverse as us because of the lack of land and abundance of Immigrants.
so it true then, u indonesian also the ame sana sini, flores itu jawa... ckp,, sama mcm kami melaka itu terengganu... kan tidak sama kamu ada sunda...kebudayaan kami tidak sama bergantung kepada daerah seperti indonesia.. hai lagu seri sarawak masakan indonesia yang punya tp kami tak kesah pn korang paten
hi ive lived in malaysia for 4 yrs n i can confirm the fact tht malaysia has the tendency to claim indonesian culture eg. the kebaya, the wayang, the gamelan etc,pls keep ur hands off of my country's culture just cuz u dont have any of ur own..im sorry but its getting a bit annoying u guys stealing our culture, while at the same time u shun the indonesians who work n help build ur country,n friggin PLEASE STOP calling us indons, don't forget tht almost every malaysian's ancestor is indonesian..

This is my favourite kind of gamelan. I love the old recordings, say, earlier than 60s, too, because the music has changed dramatically.

Very beautiful music. I very much enjoy it!
I'm Sundaneese, but Javaneese gamelan is incredible... Love to hear it both... thanks for posting...
Ah what a shame. But you're lucky to have it on a CD! Thanks for writing back.
Asmara = Love. Infatuation
Dahana = Flame, Fire
bangga menjadi orang jawa ternyata temen2 mancanegara menyukai musik gamelan

Marilah kita Indonesian citizen utk sadar akan budaya kita sendiri, mari kita lestarikan dg memberikan motivasi kpd anak2 kita minimal mengenal gamelan.
Small typo, Asmaradana instead of Asmarandana, thank you. Excellent! Thank you.
Amazing.
Maturnuwon.
Very refined and delicate music

Museum Nusantara, Delft, Netherlands. Unfortunately it seems we cannot play the gamelan for the next few months due to the renovation.
And listen the music with the heart, not the mind only.
Gamelan Go Internasional... Hebat !
