  • Wrestling is the oldest sport in the world. The fundamentals of basic set ups to the legs hasn’t changed, because they work. You must give yourself the best opportunity to score or you will fall short. Here, I cover two fundamental ways to get past the hands and get to the legs

    Hey dude, your videos are amazing and are filling a big knowledge gap for me. I haven’t seen many series from collegiate wreastlers sharing these deep insights. Great channel. If I can make a request: Throw bys, trying to hit these and can’t get them going.

      Thank you! Yes, I could make a video devoted to that, but take a look at my video is scoring near the out of bounds. I do a throwby to a footsweep.
      He has to be committed to pushing into you or it won’t work. It’s honestly harder in BJJ, because there’s no stalling from the feet and people don’t push the action and put themselves at risk

    this is pure gold! after a while off the mats and now returning to do BJJ I definitely need to revise these concepts.

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Incredible valuable information for free. I'm asking myself when is the right time(or what is the indicator) to address the elbows or the wrists? Greetings from Poland.

      I cover how to get past the hands and elbows on my first instructional (wrestlingforbjj.com) and I cover some other stuff on UA-cam, but it’s not systematic like it is on the instructional. Mainly because 1, I was doing it for free so I show what I wanted when I wanted, and 2, when there was some bullshit coaching I saw online and wanted to help the viewers get better technique before they developed bad habits

    These videos get me pumped up for learning, I wish wrestling was more common in BC, Canada. Would have definitely wrestled in highschool. Did mostly striking instead, did judo in university and now focusing on Jiu Jitsu in my 20's. Only wrestling places in Vancouver are like little wrestling clubs with 6 people, kind of crazy. Also have so much respect for wrestlers, coming across them in university, the punishment their bodies withstand is insane. I feel like my big toes, knees and neck muscles are just trying desperately to adapt to the punishment some adapt to in their developing years lol.

      If you have any tips on strengthening or drilling exercises that can be done solo that would be useful. I have a decent squat and deadlift but after 60 reps on changing levels it's not just about strength anymore.

      Wrestling without shoes on is so much different than classic wrestling with shoes on. I had the occasional foot issue with wrestling, but nothing like when I wrestle barefoot in Jiu Jitsu or Judo. My friend on my collegiate wrestling team was a judoka and he always talked about how wrestling with shoes on was deconditioning his “judo feet.” I had no idea what he was talking about until I did judo, and that was on those old ass canvas covered hay mats.
      My neck and back are wrecked from 30 years of wrestling man. I train Gi mostly these days, because it’s much easier on my neck and back. I do love noGi, because I naturally move well in that style, but I pretty much train Gi only these days. It definitely helps me to control large guys from the back.

      Dom and I plan on doing some videos on strength training for grapplers. It’s getting cold and I don’t know how long we can make videos in my set up. So, we plan on taking it to his gym. He’s a former bodybuilder and has been my trainer for the past year. I’ve made more strength gains in the last year in my 40s than I have since I was like 20

    Fantastic content. You could be the Danaher of stand up. Small details like that (ie. where to post, fundamentals) is what separates the levels in this game. Will definitely follow along. Do you have a school that's open to adults?

      Thank you for the compliment. This comes from my collegiate coach who was head coach of the world and Olympic teams. He was a 4x NCAA All American and NCAA champion. If there was a Jiu Jitsu comparison, he would be more like Helio Grace. Pretty awesome when the head coach of the Olympics is your coach. You trust everything he says.
      I train in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It’s a BJJ only school. They don’t offer any wrestling there. I help out the guys who want to learn how to wrestle. I do this at my house or at open mat at the academy.

    The shots that you guys laugh about at around 7:20 are me. I was always told to just shoot and I would get better at it. Literally no one ever told me to try to clear the hands first.

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459  2 роки тому

      We’ve all been there man. Dom is like running into a brick wall. And believe me, with his strength, you don’t want to get front headlocked by him. My god he is strong. When I was in Highschool, I was pretty good at getting past the hands, but when I transitioned to D1, I realized how much more important it was. People would just crush you with front headlocks, get on your back, legs in, and smash you face down on the mat with a powerhalf. So, then I really had to learn that it wasn’t worth the risk of shooting without proper elbow control. I have a few videos on that (simple path to the legs, traditional shots off the push, and elbow control). Drill them a lot so they are second nature.

    Would you recommend watching your content in order? i plan on viewing and drilling all of it but i’d like to know how it was intended to be digested.

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459  2 роки тому +3

      I appreciate your question. When I record new videos, I refer to older content, so it helps to watch in order. I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t hop around though. I can’t plan that far in advance. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to start with #19, because that is based off stance. You can always improve on that, and I talk about why in the video. Otherwise, I think you can skip around if you want-and if you hear me mention a concept in another video, you can go that direction. It’s definitely not like my syllabi for my courses I teach, because there’s no clear end in sight (like there is for a semester).
      Always feel free to ask me questions on here. That’s my purpose is to provide high level coaching to the masses

    Does the ellbow post also work if the opponent has a collar tie instead of a normal post. Nolf used to do it alot i just dont understand how.

      Yes, I did a video with Jordan Preisinger for an ad for wrestlingforbjj.com and covered this topic. I don’t do it exactly like everyone else does, and I think this works better. Hopefully that will be out soon. Timing, level change, push/pull. These are concepts in wrestling that work from every position. The problem I see in a lot of the BJJ guys I coach is they have none of those. This is common with highschool wrestlers too, but with good coaching, you get them to focus on how to set these things up. You can’t just try your best push off a collar tie. Not only is that just going to put you in bad position, it just doesn’t work

      Yes, it is certainly much easier on someone without a legitimate stance. I made a point to cover this in detail on my instructional with Jordanteachesjiujitsu. It should be ready for release on September 1st. You can sign up on wrestlingforbjj.com

      Thank you. Yes, one subscriber suggested that I set up a Patreon account and there I could, perhaps, review footage of your stand up and give you individualized instruction. That might be the best way to go, because if we were in person, I would either wrestle with you and/or have you wrestle with someone else and work on your technique right then. There’s an entire body of psychological literature on behavioral modification, and immediate feedback improves learning with fewer trials. Some gymnastics coaches use clickers for that reason. I’m not that big of a nerd to do that, even though I know it works, Lol. I just use my voice and it accomplishes the same thing.
