Album: Ride The Lighting - 1984
Music: For Whom The Bell Tolls
Movie: "Flags of Our Fathers" - 2006
Lyrics:
"Make his fight on the hill in the early day
Constant chill deep inside
Shouting gun, on they run through the endless grey
On they fight, for the right, yes but who's to say?
For a hill men would kill why? They do not know
Stiffened wounds test their pride
Men of five, still alive through the raging glow
Gone insane from this pain that they surely know
For whom the bell tolls
Time marches on
For whom the bell tolls
Take a look to the sky just before you die
It is the last time you will
Blackened roar massive roar fills the crumbling sky
Shattered goal fills his soul with a ruthless cry
Stranger now, are his eyes, to this mystery
He hears the silence so loud
Crack of dawn, all is gone except the will to be
Now they will see what will be, blinded eyes to see
For whom the bell tolls
Time marches on
For whom the bell tolls !"
My grandpa was a bad ass captain in the Army Air Corps in WWII. 52 missions of Germany POW for 6 months. Came back and went right back up in that plane. Performed air shows pulling maneuvers we see our jets doing today to pay for gas. Shot down more then once. Just the thought of many of these young soldiers witnessing the deaths of their fellow comrades is truly heartbreaking.

I knew a WW1 vet when I was a kid. He was a veteran and a exmoonshiner. He had lovely stories of gutting men and crawling over dead bodies in Germany. He was absolutely insane. I miss him so much.
The Great war? Huh! What was it like?
I had the privilege of knowing an old WWII vet. He was a member of the legendary 101st Airborne. I asked him once why in the hell would a man want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. He camly said "Beats jumping out of a burning one". What a an answer.

I also had the privilege of knowing a WW2 vet passed at 100 April 2020. I know this song is based on the novel from the Spanish civil war but everytime I hear it, when I visualize the brutality the song is truly trying to put on display, all I can think of is Omaha beach and the men getting showered with bullets. My dads family’s is from Germany, before the country was founded (U.S.A.) they got land from the king of Britain when it was just the first few colonies. The other part of my long distant family stayed, years later (1940) they had 2 family members serve in the German Army. They took names and conquered many areas up until 1945 or so when my moms side of the family, her relatives were in a battalion that wiped out my dads side that was fighting for Germany. Crazy how small the world is. And this was all before my mom and dad met. But we read the genealogy and it matched up with their battalions/units. My moms side had 2 in the marines and 1 in the navy. The marines wiped out my dads family members that were in a German/nazi unit
