Album: Ride The Lighting - 1984
Music: For Whom The Bell Tolls
Movie: "Flags of Our Fathers" - 2006
    Lyrics:
"Make his fight on the hill in the early day
    Constant chill deep inside
Shouting gun, on they run through the endless grey
On they fight, for the right, yes but who's to say?
For a hill men would kill why? They do not know
    Stiffened wounds test their pride
Men of five, still alive through the raging glow
Gone insane from this pain that they surely know
    For whom the bell tolls
    Time marches on
    For whom the bell tolls
Take a look to the sky just before you die
It is the last time you will
Blackened roar massive roar fills the crumbling sky
Shattered goal fills his soul with a ruthless cry
Stranger now, are his eyes, to this mystery
He hears the silence so loud
Crack of dawn, all is gone except the will to be
Now they will see what will be, blinded eyes to see
    For whom the bell tolls
    Time marches on
For whom the bell tolls !"

My grandpa was a bad ass captain in the Army Air Corps in WWII. 52 missions of Germany POW for 6 months. Came back and went right back up in that plane. Performed air shows pulling maneuvers we see our jets doing today to pay for gas. Shot down more then once. Came home to work for Chrystler meet my grandma and be the best grandpa anyone could ask for. I know everyone of his stories including ones I shouldn't know. He passed away in 99.

I know this song is based on the novel from the Spanish civil war but everytime I hear it, when I visualize the brutality the song is truly trying to put on display, all I can think of is Omaha beach and the men getting showered with bullets. God bless all of those men, I am proud to say one of my great grandfathers was on that beach that day. Love this video, thank you so much for making it. While I know I am lucky to not have to experience such things, this song pumps me up and will temporarily make me wish I had to make the same kind of sacrifice and take on such a task.

You're blessing German soldiers that murdered hundreds of thousands innocent people because of their religious or political views . That's Men , Women and CHILDREN . You say they were just doing their job ?? Smfh !!!! You go ahead and say that to the Polish , Jewish families among others who lost people in the Holocaust . What you said is VERY unsettling to say the least ! Maybe you should research the Axis troops and what they did to so many innocent Men , Women and Children . I can't get over your comment though >>>> " Just doing their job " smfh the more I think about it the more disturbing it is that someone would say that ! Smfh !!!!

Figured I would give a story, after reading the comments of all these Combat vets or people that had loved ones served.
My dads family’s is from Germany, before the country was founded (U.S.A.) they got land from the king of Britain when it was just the first few colonies. The other part of my long distant family stayed, years later (1940) they had 2 family members serve in the German Army. They took names and conquered many areas up until 1945 or so when my moms side of the family, her relatives were in a battalion that wiped out my dads side that was fighting for Germany. Crazy how small the world is. And this was all before my mom and dad met. But we read the genealogy and it matched up with their battalions/units. My moms side had 2 in the marines and 1 in the navy. The marines wiped out my dads family members that were in a German/nazi unit

The title for the book, and the song, come from a poem by John Donne.
