  • We visit a well-known Mississippian formation of fossil-rich limestone just east of Anna, Illinois along State Route 146. Crinoids, Blastoids, Archimedes (screws), Fenestella, and more await even the casual collector. This road-cut is about 100 yards long, and fossils may be found along either side of this busy road. The best time to visit is in the late fall through early spring, when the vegetation and bugs will not bother you as much. Be careful to use only small hand tools and do not cause major change to the strata or you will incur the wrath of the local authorities.

You can clean limestone fossils (Calcium-based) with weak solutions of acid (Vinegar), but be careful. The acid will dissolve (not only the matrix) but also the fossil itself. To halt the action of the acid, add small amounts of Baking Soda until the fizzing stops, then soak the fossils overnight in fresh water. If your fossils are silica-based (quartz) then you can use stronger acids (Muriatic) to dissolve away the surrounding matrix, since silica is impervious to most acids.

I always used to look for these with my mom when I was a kid, and she called them "Indian beads" ... it wasn't until I was an adult I learned that what we were finding was actually fossilized Crinoid stems. Now I look for them with my kids in Central Illinois!

Just went here, so many fossils! Unfortunately there were a lot of ticks; the best time to visit would definitely be during the winter months.

Hey guys. I wanted to day but I couldn't find a way to contact you. My wife and I Fossil hunters were we search for and buy. I want to say thank you for your awesome videos. I had some fossils I couldn't Id, but with the aid of your videos, we have been able to. Also, I live very close to the Il146 at Anna and collect there regularly. Everytime we go, we find some beautiful criminal stems and even some brachiopods. We have also found beautiful blastoids and Trilobite phygidiums. One of the most beautiful I found was a Crinoid complete with calyx and stem.
Again, thank you for your time in producing informative, detailed and friendly videos with precise location details.

I stopped by the vienna spot by the on ramp couple years ago and a cop parked behind my jeep while i was collecting so i casually got in and drove away LOL he didn't follow though. Im guessing parking on the on ramp is illegal? Even though truckers do it??? Maybe i should park at the mcdonalds and walk over next time... The collecting is legal, correct?

As long as you do not use heavy tools, it is legal. I wouldn't shovel or use prybars.

drove out today - 2 our drive both ways - didnt have a digging permit so could not dig - was hoping for surfaces finds like your video , 2 hours of looking - found places where others were working but no evidence of any fossils . looked high and low - wasted 6 hours of my day and a tank of fuel to come home empty handed. i figuered i would at least see some Crinoids in the lime stone , nothing found at all.

Perhaps you were in the wrong place? I have been to this locale many, many, many times and we find hundreds of fossils every time. No digging required.
The dirt is littered with crinoids and archimedes screws and some blastoids. Sometimes the leaves in the winter may cover things up, but a little clearing will reveal rich treasures. There are over 200 feet of limestone shelves exposed here.

Hey I moved to makanda il a year ago and been trying to find some fossil sites to go to. Was wondering were some good places I could check out or even have a person more well versed in the area could show me. I plan on going to Mazon creek soon during summer vacation.

I would not have been so specific with the locality. Unfortunately many of the collector types out there have zero respect for sites and will vacuum them clean. They hang out on forums and go to club meetings just to get sites out of people instead of studying local geology and doing the travel and footwork to find sites.

This site has been well-known to collectors for decades. It is not a secret or hard-to-find locality. I understand your concern but I have always been uncomfortable with the idea of keeping excellent sites (open to the public) as privileged information. Thanks for sharing your view, which is shared by many.

I've been wanting to fossil hunt for a long long time, but I have no idea how to go about it or even where to do it! I live near Madison, WI. Do you know of the nearest area that would yield any sort of finds?
