Did you say those bottle rockets going off - 放炮 的 声音, sounded like Chicago? Well, I did not know that Chicago also celebrated Chinese New Year's like that ... or were you insinuating actual guns going off w/o stopping in Chiraq? ... haha. That was done in bad taste! So where were you from in the States? Don't ever say West Virginia, where eating possum is still a delicacy ... feel me!

(7:49) The CCTV Spring Festival Extravaganza is a must watch program in the freezing North-East provinces. The further down south, the warmer the winter weather, the less people watch it. In southern provinces like Guangdong, Guangxi & Hainan, after the big meal people can go outdoors and check out other fun activities. These days audience participation in the south is down to 2-3%. In a large country like China, traditional practices are diverse and cultural preferences are far from homogeneous. The core idea of Spring Festival shared by all Chinese is family gathering, taking a break from work, collecting year end bonuses, having fun, and getting ready for another year. Anthropologically, people everywhere are very much alike as they respond to the changing seasons.

The evening program is broadcast to my country live every year same time. I also never miss it every year while waiting for the fireworks at midnight.
Unfortunately rain did also dampen out the fireworks here too.
It was suppose to be a fireworks gallore this year as it has been permitted to be sold after a long ban.
The change in governance lifted the ban literally days before CNY. Somehow people still managed to sell and buy some in time. As for me, I sort of was oblivious of the lifting of the ban and didn't get any.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed they would continue next year.
Tell you something, a CNY is not exciting nor happiest without fireworks and children(the more the merrier).
I just love to play fireworks with young children around the ages of 6 onwards, they are just so happy the vibe spreads to you.

Very nice video, especially the white-and-black piece of the silent movie style.
Information for those who are not familiar with China. In southern China, traditionally people live through winter without heaters, so temperature in room is just the same as outdoors, even lower when the Sun is out. As a result, people leave doors open (why bother closing it) and wear down coats inside their houses, which you probably noticed in the video.
In northern China, the bitter cold in winter could be lethal, so heating is a must-have. As a result, people just wear sweater or even t-shirts in their houses, and enjoy popsicles from time to time.
China is so big that varieties could be shocking for foreigners, especially for those who do not visit China yet.

Unfortunately, we can't 放鞭炮 in Singapore even though we celebrate the Chinese New Year too :)

Growing up in Singapore in the late 1950s, Chinese New Year was a big event. Businesses and shops closed for at least 3 days, some closed for a week. Food, family reunions, visiting elders, receiving visitors, were time honored activity. For unmarried children, they also received red packets stuffed with cash. These symbolised luck for both givers and recievers. And yes, the firework displays added so much to the celebration and festivity. Unfortunately, fireworks were also a fire hazard then and when the government banned fireworks, we lost a big part of the emotional atmosphere that characterised CNY for my generation.
Katherine, thank you very much for reviving these long embedded memories.
Keep posting. Love your wholesome content.

Thank you for video and I enjoyed very much. It reminded me of one memorable Chinese New Year when I was still a kid (under 10)
in my father's ancestral village in another age. What I remember most the festivities in the days leading to the Chinese New Year. Every
day the villages made one special food in the most traditional way, and many required the cooperations of several families together due to the labors needed. One night was to make rice cakes starting with the different types of rices, that first needs to be grinded up on the old stone grinder. And then the flours need to be steamed on those big wok that you only found in the countryside. I still remember how good those steamed flour ball tasted. But those were the old days. Now the village is falling apart , as most of the villages have moved away to bigger towns and cities and I don't have any close relatives there any longer. Our old ancestral house burned down over 30 years ago. And the only time I would still go there is during the Ching-ming.
