Trial by fire. Given our history, we are probably going to fuck up rather badly when it comes to AI. But some of us will not only survive, but flourish.

(Touch a snail's tentacles, see ants recoil from fire etc) The question therefore that obsesses me is could AI turn this rule on its head by having intelligence AND self awareness WITHOUT conscious feelings ? If so, would this "numb self-awareness" still result in self-interest, or would its incapacity to experience even elementary sensations of pain and pleasure leave it forever indifferent to its fate ? As long as AI has no agency, it's still fundamentally just a tool made for and by humans. Like any other tool, the risks associated with it resides not in the tool itself, but in our potential to misuse it. This conversation on the evolution of intelligence is pretty cool. Despite our existence amongst the vastness, that continues to be discovered with all that we know and are to know, one will always chase the meaning of life. To catch a butterfly.
Yuval is describing the plot points of George Lucas' "THX-1138". I'm disappointed Yuval is presenting his ideas as novel, and not stating where he got them from.
Yes, more than we know, both above and below our dimension. And we are still under Quarantine. Is this guy one of the WEF guys? If so, he's part of the reason for our continued quarantine.
Funny how they can just double the age to suit their narrative. The truth is that there is absolutely no way for a microbe on a small dust flake on the edge of a tiny galaxy to even comprehend the vastness as well as actual meaning to the part of the universe they can see.
As meditation teaches you, you are not your thoughts. So I wholeheartedly agree that consciousness and intelligence have nothing to do with each other except they overlap sometimes.
I think people are creating a new definition for intelligence. Once it used to mean that an intelligent person could fix any problem and do it for the greatest benefit amongst all involved. Now it seems we are saying intelligence means; "knowing how to count to 10". This is new to me, must be the movement of a new, and very self-centered generation?!?
Yes because then there'd be no point in anything. How can intelligence exist without reason or purpose. Otherwise intelligence is meaningless and worthless, and I don't see any effort being put forth by said intelligent organism as being valid or necessary. And that's just dumb.
Wow he is extremely informative and the way he is able to explain things so well and in such few words but convey such a powerful message is astonishing. He really can make one think and at a time it is very needed. I definitely am going to look more into him.

The word is entrainment. That's what creates the feeling of resonance with something else. A purposeful entrainment is optimized by managing interaction in such a way as to create a high degree of emotional harmonics. Intelligence is the code by which things understand and navigate their environments with. That code will be rewritten in humans as AI formulates and deploys more advanced entrainment algorithms. This may be the last generation of people to think like our ancestors before us.
Self-destructive intelligence?? Sadly, that point is completely wrong. The opposite is true. An intelligent entity would figure out how to survive any situation. I can't believe that what I am hearing is coming from supposedly "intelligent" beings?! But this is the new world we are making for ourselves-- that we just create new definitions for any words any way we want?? I think what he meant to say (but he didn't say it, so I find his presentation skills very immature and in fact STUPID), but he meant to say that technology and the untethered evolution and abuse of natural resources ---- the GREEDY exhibition of gaining materials and fighting for power --- that is self-destructive. That is stupidity.

They've already said our idea of the age is already off. Supposedly the universe is actually double what we thought. It's supposedly 26B years old, so we don't know as much as we think. We have ideas but those ideas get busted very often.

Creating something that one day will potentially have the power to wipe out all humans. It's not like anyone is going to stop it. It's already in motion. As human we just want more and never satisfied with what we have. Every year there's a new phone or some kind of new technology. I'm 100% sure this will be humanities downfall
If you believe that, then you're just reducing consciousness to meaninglessness. Consciousness is (of course) hard to define, but a place to start is something with the cognitive ability to create an abstract model of its own awareness. In other words, even self-awareness isn't enough to be true consciousness. You need abstract internal introspection and a memory that changes based on it, and that's a very specific mechanism that's either there or it isn't. There isn't some spectrum of consciousness. That's why you can have things that are intelligent, but not conscious. We even have examples of brain-damaged humans that can still do "intelligent" things, yet don't have a consciousness.

I just want to point out AI uses information given to consolidate a written narrative that is given as well from images and videos that are have been given to rearrange and make it look more fluid using more software not just one it's usually like two or three softwares to make a video that's AI generated AI is like Picasso
@@absolutium Ans: "Data points" // having acquired more general knowledge data. And some would say an intuitive nature that analyzes situations further and easier than others. It's an acquired process because the human mind seeks to acquire it. If AI seeks to acquire anything, it does so through it's software algorithm developed by humans.
@@absolutium Ans: "Complexity" // More human brain power goes into writing AI software. That will increase as humans keep inputting toward that end. It's artificial evolution, and traditional software follows that same pattern.
I would divide it further: to me, consciousness, awareness, sentience and intelligence are all orthogonal dimensions. What Harari calls consciousness I would call sentience - the ability to feel. Awareness reflects at least a rudimentary cognitive model of subject and object, and a sense of separation between them. Intelligence is, I would agree, the ability to solve problems. Consciousness is the hardest one to define, but I think of it as "the fact that the lights are on" - that something is watching it all happen. I feel this is unlikely to emerge from complex "information processing" systems for a variety of reasons (not the least of which being that information is never processed; it is only state in one moment and state in another moment), but in any case evolution could easily have solved all the problems in nature by making creatures that were intelligent, sentient, aware, and _not_ conscious, so the fact that we are conscious seems superfluous from at least a biological perspective.
I appreciate what your saying, but I would say awareness and sentience are products of consciousness. I would also say that consciousness is a product of intelligence that is configured in just the right way.
@@mtbjason4 It's the latter point that freaks me out the most, because I hear many people say this and yet I've never really heard an explanation for why it's so popular. It all just sounds a bit hand-wavey to me: step 1 information processing, step 2 ?, step 3 this thing which appears to define subjectivity and so about which no testable claim can be made.
You can have consciousness and not feel. For example having a lidocaine injection for a tooth extraction, if enough is injected in the right spots(the injection hurts yes) but you wont feel the dentists pliers ripping the root out of your skull. You will feel later, yes.

Hey Lex, ever heard of the Galactic Federation of Light?
It’s now suspected the universe is 26 billion years old, so that’s even more nuts.
Funny how they can just double the age to suit their narrative. The truth is that there is absolutely no way for a microbe on a small dust flake on the edge of a tiny galaxy to even comprehend the vastness as well as actual meaning to the part of the universe they can see.
The universe is a infinite spiral of energy
Emotion is something I believe these beings are fascinated with. I think they are walking amongst us now.

Translation: Our humanity will be erased.
''Intelligence also seems to be self-destructive'' Yuval Noah Harari
I found that specious and glib.

We have to accept that it's not about survival it's about change. That's evolution.
They've already said our idea of the age is already off. Supposedly the universe is actually double what we thought. It's supposedly 26B years old, so we don't know as much as we think. We have ideas but those ideas get busted very often.

Lex you need to interview Tom Campbell
"Intelligence also seems to be self-destructive" Is it really the case? Or is it specific to human species?
No because we know for a fact and we have video footage of animals consciously committing suicide. Some animals will become depressed and starve themselves like dogs who loose an owner or friend or even caged animals.
It's specific to sociopathic fascists like him and his boss Klaus Wab.
Nah monkeys are toxic man
Neither. Intelligence builds and creates for the better good. GREED is self-destructive. This no brain man can't ascertain the difference between unfettered technology for selfish corporate gain and "intelligence". Wow, I'm so NOT-impressed with this interview, I had to post it all over the web.

And most diabolical. You should follow up with some of his other “ideas”
Creating something that one day will potentially have the power to wipe out all humans. It's not like anyone is going to stop it. It's already in motion. As human we just want more and never satisfied with what we have. Every year there's a new phone or some kind of new technology. I'm 100% sure this will be humanities downfall
Well said, I fear that this will be a reality one day.
All living things are conscious. There are just levels of consciousness.

@@victorspresence1263Yeah no.. here is a question for you..
What's the difference between traditional computational processes and modern AI?
@@victorspresence1263Question number 2:
What does it mean for certain person to be more intelligent than other?
@@absolutium Ans: "Data points" // having acquired more general knowledge data. And some would say an intuitive nature that analyzes situations further and easier than others. It's an acquired process because the human mind seeks to acquire it. If AI seeks to acquire anything, it does so through it's software algorithm developed by humans.
@@absolutium Ans: "Complexity" // More human brain power goes into writing AI software. That will increase as humans keep inputting toward that end. It's artificial evolution, and traditional software follows that same pattern.
This Dr is a real guy!!!
It all just sounds a bit hand-wavey to me: step 1 information processing, step 2 ?, step 3 this thing which appears to define subjectivity and so about which no testable claim can be made.
yes, and these distinctions are pretty critical, and it seems to me that Harari has no idea what he's talking about for the most part.
You can have consciousness and not feel. For example having a lidocaine injection for a tooth extraction, if enough is injected in the right spots(the injection hurts yes) but you wont feel the dentists pliers ripping the root out of your skull. You will feel later, yes.
