Yuval and Bibi, thanks for helping expose these two oppressors Lex, we appreciate it. You gave them all the rope that was necessary.
Lex - “How many aliens”

Ok I haven’t watched it yet but I am IN!
That conversation actually happened
you guys dont talk to you bacon ? I thought all americans did... They sell bacon-trees at Walmart I think...
Some shrooms/lsd and you’ll for sure have a relationship with the bacon. Google lsd and babies brains. It’s all an illusion.
"Intelligence tends to be self-destructive, maybe intelligent life form out there dont' survive for long. " That's such an interesting argument. This clip has so much interesting view points and ideas, worth listening to multiple times. Great conversation.
It's a very old argument, Yuval offers nothing new.

"The people for whom it wasn't okay are just not here" That hits hard

I was thinking the same thing
Harari expands on the idea in Sapiens, explaining that our species is the only remaining one, having overpowered the other human species. It wasn't ok for the Neanderthals and the Homo Floresiensis, but they're not here to tell the story.
Trial by fire. Given our history, we are probably going to fuck up rather badly when it comes to AI. But some of us will not only survive, but flourish.
Brutal
@@Cafeston they are though... Yuval is a (((snake)))... many africans today have up to 20% non-hominid DNA
Our violence stems from the primal side of our existence, not the intelligent side.
The intelligent side of our existence makes our violence more efficient and scaled.
So I respectfully disagree to Yuval's assessment that intelligence is overrated.
A false equivalency.
Disagree. Most serial killers are highly intelligent not more animalistic. Mass murder is done intentionally and with much thought and intelligence. genghis khan, Alexander the Great, mao, hitler, Hiroshima, Iraq war ect. Most of these violent acts were justified with good intentions of that individual or group or government.
@@01downside read it again.
@@01downsidemost serial killers are not highly intelligent, that's a Hollywood trope. More commonly, they are of average or slightly below average intelligence
My intellectual side says that if another person impedes me n my family’s lives, there will be hell to pay. Now apply that to a global level for hundreds of thousands of years.
@@onlyinyaksthe desire to hurt someone, for *any* reason, is a manifestation of your animalistic side.
Your intelligent side mitigates it to only consider people who threaten you or your loved ones, but the fundamental desire is still animalistic.
Your intelligent side also provides tools and ideas to make you more easily able to hurt someone
Intelligence is destructive without consciousness. So well explained.
When I eat salad its destructive
Total crap. Look at the world right now. We are destructive, even though we have consciousness. Then look at plants, no consciousness and not destructive.
Wisdom Is Key.🎉
@@geraldsmith7240 Noah is wrong more than he is right.
Ironic, isn't it. 🤔
His explanation of projecting consciousness onto things that you have relationship with reminds me of the movie/book "Being There". People projected all sorts of meaning into his simple gardener/nature statements based on who they were and what they wanted to hear. People are not used to communicating with somebody that doesn't have their own (usually selfish) thing going on. It makes it hard to get the cues we usually do from face-to-face communication. Now, imagine you don't have a face!
I think there are 3 elements at play :
1- Intelligence (as defined by Harari as the capacity to solve problems)
2- Consciousness (as defined by Harari as the capacity to have feelings)
3- Self awareness (as defined as the capacity of humans and some primates to recognise their own reflection in a mirror)
The organic world seems to suggest that you can't have self awareness without conscious feelings and intelligence, but that you can have conscious feelings without self awareness and intelligence. (Touch a snail's tentacles, see ants recoil from fire etc)
The question therefore that obsesses me is could AI turn this rule on its head by having intelligence AND self awareness WITHOUT conscious feelings ? If so, would this "numb self-awareness" still result in self-interest, or would its incapacity to experience even elementary sensations of pain and pleasure leave it forever indifferent to its fate ?
As long as AI has no agency, it's still fundamentally just a tool made for and by humans. Like any other tool, the risks associated with it resides not in the tool itself, but in our potential to misuse it. In this respect, the dangers of AI are no different to the dangers of any other technology invented since the iron age.
If AI were to become the game-changer, it would not be because of its intelligence per se, but because of its (as yet unascertained) potential for agency.
When you say “being able to have feeling”, do you mean to have experiences?
@@stevenbragg85 yes, or sentience. You could say that a sentient being is capable of experiencing at least one of the following : sight, sound, touch, smell, heat, movement. etc.... Some might say that thoughts and qualia are "experienced". I guess they are, though they're not really sentient experiences. Any rate all three roads - intelligence, sentience and self awareness - merge at some point. But AI may be different. I can imagine AI attaining self-awareness, but I can't imagine it gaining sentience. But it's anyone's guess
I don't think you can program consciousness into an AI program or chat bot
@@xxxs8309 nor do I, but could you program it to have self awareness ? Or would the absence of consciousness preclude self awareness despite it having immense computational intelligence ? For me this is the key question, but no one seems to be asking it.
Imagine for a moment that it WAS possible for AI to be self-aware without having conscious feeling. Would its "numb self awareness" enable it to develop self interest and intention despite having no visceral experience of pain or pleasure ? Would it be able to "want" or would it remain totally indifferent to its fate in its meagre, sterile, stimulus-free existence ?
Kubrick seemed to think that self awareness would lead to intention when he directed 2001. Despite the fact that Hal didn't appear to have conscious feelings, he clearly had intentions, and this led to a kind of proto-psychology, at times even appearing to manifest basic primal emotions like the fear of "death" (being turned off). All of this despite not having any apparent physical sentience like touch or heat etc.
@@Suggsonbass I think you broke down the three elements pretty well. I have to disagree with the podcast guest on consciousness though - he mentions trees are intelligent but not conscious. Why so? A tree doesn't only solve problems, it is also aware, - that's apparent even for an outside observer. Plants will heal their wounds, turn towards the sun, form mutual relationships with fungi and bacteria in soil etc.. Based on the three categories you outlined, a tree would be conscious and intelligent, but possibly not self aware. That seems similar to some more primitive forms of animals. When it comes to a robot / ai we can easily, at current stage, state that it only appears to be intelligent. However there are robots programmed to be environment-aware too - seeing and identifying objects, humans and so on. From a programming perspective, it is pretty easy to also define and code self-awareness, - it's almost trivial, given that the intelligence is already widely available.

Compassionate people throughout history observed the struggles of human spiritual growth(cognitive growth).
Artificial is what spawns narcissism. We love to hear our own thoughts being listened to by other humans that support or buy into our indoctrination, and delusion.

_Synchronistic Mathematics_ is a truth system that overrides cultural indoctrination because it develops empirical evidence over a period of time--- allowing a direct personal experience with a higher intelligence than AI.

As meditation teaches you, you are not your thoughts. So I wholeheartedly agree that consciousness and intelligence have nothing to do with each other except they overlap sometimes.
“You are not your hand”
“OMG I’m enlightened now!”
I think people are creating a new definition for intelligence. Once it used to mean that an intelligent person could fix any problem and do it for the greatest benefit amongst all involved. Now it seems we are saying intelligence means; "knowing how to count to 10". This is new to me, must be the movement of a new, and very self-centered generation?!?

"intelligence also tends to be self-destructive" 00:50
excuse me? intelligence WITHOUT ethics and wisdom is self-destructive.
The issue, our issue as humans, is that our intelligence has exceeded our wisdom which is leading to this destructive behavior.
You echoed Yuval's point perfectly. He talks a lot about compassion, something I think is humanity's saving grace.
The word is entrainment. That's what creates the feeling of resonance with something else. A purposeful entrainment is optimized by managing interaction in such a way as to create a high degree of emotional harmonics. Intelligence is the code by which things understand and navigate their environments with. That code will be rewritten in humans as AI formulates and deploys more advanced entrainment algorithms. This may be the last generation of people to think like our ancestors before us.
Translation: Our humanity will be erased.
Perhaps the best discussion I’ve heard.
All living things are conscious. There are just levels of consciousness.
If you believe that, then you're just reducing consciousness to meaninglessness. Consciousness is (of course) hard to define, but a place to start is something with the cognitive ability to create an abstract model of its own awareness. In other words, even self-awareness isn't enough to be true consciousness. You need abstract internal introspection and a memory that changes based on it, and that's a very specific mechanism that's either there or it isn't. There isn't some spectrum of consciousness. That's why you can have things that are intelligent, but not conscious. We even have examples of brain-damaged humans that can still do "intelligent" things, yet don't have a consciousness.

@@absolutium Ans: "Data points" // having acquired more general knowledge data. And some would say an intuitive nature that analyzes situations further and easier than others. It's an acquired process because the human mind seeks to acquire it. If AI seeks to acquire anything, it does so through it's software algorithm developed by humans.
@@absolutium Ans: "Complexity" // More human brain power goes into writing AI software. That will increase as humans keep inputting toward that end. It's artificial evolution, and traditional software follows that same pattern.
