THIS!! It's like living in the Panopticon. It should not be normal to film strangers in public. It's WEIRD. Doesn't matter if your video is mocking them, flattering them, whatever. If you don't have permission, don't film someone (on purpose). Period.

just a random comment about surveillance culture - im a teacher at a public school in brazil and the way we’re supposed to take attendance now is by taking a picture of the students (actually 4 pictures) and there’s this government AI tool that identifies the students. isn’t that freaking crazy? the students hate it, the teachers hate it, the artificial intelligence tool doesn’t work properly (it struggles to identify black students in a country where 56% of the population is black) and it’s just a big joke

I think people forget that celebrities are real people too and some of them either have trauma or have to deal with misogyny too, like the rest of us little people.

Jordan, you should check out "Fantical: the Catfishing of Tegan and Sara". They were similarly queer artists that were really popular in that community but they made themselves really available to their fandom. The dockumentary goes through all the issues they had bc they were too available to their fans. I bring this up bc I think it adds more context to not only the tabloids but the fans themselves can be really toxic. Chappel is very correct in being worried about being stalked or exploited.

as a journalism student i can't believe i'm hearing jordan talk about ipso😭 whilst being ipso regulated is optional, ethics is a mandatory unit of the NCTJ qualification which the majority (about 80%) of qualified journalists have and the ipso code is used to teach ethics for this qualification. so in theory, most journalists will have had ethics training and passed an exam in journalism ethics and regulations. you could argue that that isn't relevant if the code isn't enforced/mandatory and that definitely is an issue (as well as the punishments for breaking ipso if you are regulated not being particularly severe in most cases), but i do think its interesting to consider that tabloid journalists have (most likely) been trained to know better but are potentially continuing to be unethical for the sake of views/clicks. imo its disgusting and i would hope that in my own career i never behave in that way

    • @erin2496

I definitely agree that drama channels and accounts like pop crave definitely operate as tabloids. I also feel like some of what I would call ‘low effort commentary’ (which predominantly consist of reacting to TikTok drama or trends) channels also can be lumped in to this modern tabloid culture. A lot of videos I feel just boil down to ‘look at what these people are doing look how bad/or weird they are’ whether they are discussing something serious or more frivolous.

I had never really thought about the loving surveillance argument, and I find it so interesting because I live in Mexico, which is a very unsafe country, particularly for women. Because of that, it is absolutely the norm to share your location with people constantly, whether it's your mom, your friends, or whomever. But when you think about it, it does foster a culture where we know where other people are at all times and that definitely limits people's freedom.

Surveillance culture creeps me out. Even the part about surveilling loved ones with apps for the sake of "safety". I've been in a relationship in which I had to tell him any place I'd go, even if I was just going to the uni library, and if those kind of apps existed back then, then I know he'd make me use them so he could control me. Also the likelihood of someone disappearing is so small, at least where I live, that I don't think those apps are that useful.

It's not that I think this person knows me though because I am interacting with their content, surely they are interacting back. It shows how confusing interacting with someone one way from a distance is still so confusing for our brains.

Great video Jordan! The level of access and demand for information I see people exhibit with TikTok and instagram actually blows my mind as someone who was a teen in the early 2000s. The demands to make everyone explain everything or make every statement beyond reproach or to give a backstory on everything and link every single thing they use or have in their home is such a contrast to the tiny tiny glimpses we had into celebrities back when I was a teen. The access to information has created a demand for access to every part of someone’s life that goes far beyond what is reasonable and is extended to everyone from a huge celebrity to a person who randomly goes viral for one video. Having parts of your life be private or not sharing everything with everyone is normal . People will gossip about someone in their own comments section like, hello? They can see this?

They aren't a meaningful stand-in for social interaction, and they will always promote drama and fear and ragebait when it comes down to their bottom line. Do the benefits really outweigh the costs if the tradeoff is "well I'm scared to go out in public because I might be filmed without my consent, but at least I found this interesting artist/song/event/news item"?

Otherwise I stay clear. But I think it’s interesting that it’s only when I’m feeling low I crave it. She got famous so so quickly after her music blew up and doesn’t seem to realize that unfortunately she’s not seen as a person, but a brand/entertainer who “signed up” for this. Venting online to millions of strangers who don’t gaf hurts more than helps. These conversations are best held off-line, not the entire Internet.

I was thinking about how drama channels (especially by content farmers) are basically the new tabloid back when the James Charles "drama" was hot in 2019-2020. The amount of channels just doing the same "commentary" and low-key dehumanizing some of their subjects just give me the ick and when I had that clarity, I unsubscribed to them all and stopped engaging in more tabloid-like content.

My sandal broke in a store one day when I was heading to the checkout and I already did all my shopping so ofc I just went ahead and waited in line. It was still attached at the ankle and covering my foot but it was flopping lmao. The teens in line behind me started filming my flopping sandal. It was equally hilarious and annoying but ultimately they were being harmless so I acted like I didn’t notice and went on with my day. All that to say people will film you for the most mundane reason hoping they will get a viral clip and a little clout.

10/10 video really got my brain flowing! made me reflect on how I tend to see social media accounts as an aspect of personality, mostly with friends I don’t see often or acquaintances I don’t know well. I feel like their accounts are a way for me to connect with them without having human connection, which is kind of freaky lol. Like Jordan said most of it is out of that place of love like wanting to make sure they’re in a stable place, but sometimes I think it makes me assume personality traits before I know people really well. One of my Instagram mutuals started going to my school, i’m friends with them now and they’re so different than what I assumed they would be like just based on their Instagram persona. does anyone else experience to this?
also had never heard of the gynaepticon which I think can only be formed by a society that is so punishing to women that women start punishing each other for not being what other people expect them to be.

Amazing video! Quick note, I think Jeremy Bentham is the dude who conceived of the idea for the panopticon as a prison. Foucault furthered the analysis and utilized the idea to hypothesize about surveillance.

I think there’s something to be explored around gossip forums and how they play a part in the surveillance landscape as well, especially Tattle, as there you can have loads of threads, and people talking in those threads, solely about one person. I find them fascinating.

I think the gynaepticon is a really good observation when it comes to a lot of detailed online 'discourse' about female celebrities and how they can seem to be more scrutinized for doing similar things as male celebrities (as if there's a higher standard for women that is being upheld by other women) BUT I think that mostly applies to the the more productive discussions that take place online, while most of the abusive and pointlessly horrible comments I see about Chappell Roan for example tend to come from like, shitty twitter men. And I have a suspicion that most of the harassment that female celebrities receive directly (like about their appearance or their body or their sexuality) probably still comes mostly from men as well.

im in my late 20s and i have resorted to only using snapchat as a social media bc it feels the most private and closed-circle vibes... the tabloid covers on that app are outrageous and something just completely falsed or not included in the tabloid. lots of long-winded paragraphs to get you to engage further feels so predatory, especially with the new endlessly-repeating ads if you cannot tap the screen right away. the only plus is the bite-sized tv show episodes from Bravo or TLC are entertaining for limited breaks at work and when i don't care enough to watch the shows in their entirety lol

Ugh I have major social anxiety and with it the fear of being observed so I'm always anon on social media. But it's definitely partially evolved into the fear of being filmed without my consent like if I even SEE someone with a camera out in public I'm running as fast as I can in the other direction, even if I live in a country where it's not as prevalent (a lot of that sorta embarassing tiktok stuff is filmed of lower class people or drug addicts 🙃)

I really recommend listening to some of Shameless podcast “Scandal” series. Because they cover a history of different celebrities or relationships over a long period of time and often years after the events this allows for a very different perspective than consuming the media in the moment. It also shows the patterns in media and in reporting about different people - for example young women.

surveillance culture also makes it unfortunately easier to stalk people and provide easier means of harassing them. i recently had to delete all social media because a former friend was using it (along with my phone number) to bombard me endlessly with calls and messages as well as to keep tabs on what i was doing. i don’t think i’ll be using it anytime soon because i don’t want anyone to have access to me, even with privacy settings

Yesss, i remember i vented about my job on a subreddit dedicated to my workplace (very popular food chain) and someone commented if i lived in (blank) state and i pancked so i lied and said i lived in this other state. Next day, my weird coworker came up to me saying he's going to move to the state that i lied about living in. I thought it was a weird coincidence but he never even ended up moving. I was spooked and deleted my whole reddit account. My reddit was very private, i never posted my name or photos so the fact that my coworker was able to pinpoint me based off of a vent post that didnt include any names or locations was freaky.

I don't really understand why people are so excited to send pictures to companies or post pictures of strangers. Actors, athletes and musicians BUT still strangers. Can you imagine if people got this rabid over doctors and nurses? They contribute in meaningful ways but we don't collectively as a culture worship them.
"Oh look there goes one of the top, highest paid heart surgeons!"
    "Take pictures!" "Take pictures!"
People would be questioning why there are random men and women in scrubs posted on social media and splashed across magazines and newspapers 😂😂😂
