@junkfoodguy there are bylaws in place and these venues do not violate them. King/Portland is a pre-existing entertainment district. I have heard louder music from cars driving by. There are many neighborhoods that don't have music venues, move there if you're looking for peace and quiet otherwise leave the long standing entertainment neighborhoods alone. There have already been more restrictions laid on music venues that are impacting the ability for a vibrant music culture in Toronto. It no wonder artists don't want to come here.
If you chose to live in the city of Toronto, then you made the choice to deal with noise from a city that never sleeps. There are these wonderful things called noise canceling headphones, earplugs, or sound proofing your apartment.
Really tired of these complaints. People are moving into music districts, theatre districts and areas known for their performance venues and then complain. It makes no sense and it affects these areas traditionally known for their culture and vibrancy. It's nuts. 🤦🏿♀️
I have lived in this area for 20 years, when this neighborhood had less than 1,000 people, and moved here because I love the energy. These condos went up after the clubs and, for the record, there are a lot less patios than there used to be! As a matter of fact, there used to be a splendid rooftop right opposite where Earl's is going to be (where there is now a huge commercial building) and it broke my heart when it was redeveloped. We were actually there on the last day. This is NOTHING new, though she is trying to make it sound that way. These people moved in to these glass towers and are acting like colonials: they came, they saw, they liked, they acquired... and then they want change it to suit them, regardless of the thousands in the neighbourhood who don't. They want what we've built but want to control it to suit their lifestyle that is obviously more suitable to the suburbs. I wish the folks who use these patios also start facebook groups to defend their rights to those spots. The people on the lakes want the same thing. They just moved in to areas that were abandoned and so were used for partying... and now want restrictions on activities that predated them by millennia. One resident admitted that he heard no noise when his window was closed. So close your window!!! I also checked a neighbour who complained about sounds from Marben coming through her open window. Like seriously?! Then there are those who complain about the air show. Like what?! It's loud and I'm no fan... but it is and has been around forever, and people love it! I am no fan of the fact that Earl's came in and pushed Lee's out as the latter predates even me in the neighbourhood, and was part of making this area so attractive... though I do love where Lee has now located. This is the ENTERTAINMENT district! Period. It serves many people who like a variety of entertainment. I'm not saying that we shouldn't continually revisit noise bylaws but I feel no sympathy for her story. Do as my friend suggested and move to King East (lovely restaurants there), or Rosedale (ditto!). I wonder how she got on to City TV... Where are they when people like me who love the area want to speak up about it? Where is the nuanced reporting?! ...and, for the record, I've attended all the meetings and voiced my opinions... and will be sending in my feedback!
Agreed. These new residents need to move out of the city. The city's vibe was always active at night and it would have been known to the new buyers before they moved in. It should be the developers at fault if they're using cheaper materials on the buildings for soundproofing. In any case, better to have restaurant than massive night clubs beside you.
I remember a guy on the radio complaining that, on Saturday mornings, he couldn't relax on his condo balcony because there was always a live band playing in the park. They asked him where he lived, he said Yonge and Dundas, the park was Dundas Square. When Olivia Chow was counsellor, she put a moratorium on new bars and restaurants in her district due to noise complaints by new condo owners on Adelaide and John, THE ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT. Before the condos, that area was a ghost town. The clubs found cheap rent and revitalized the area, made it a go to spot in the city, then the condos moved in and people started complaining. Get out of the city if you don't like the noise.
Noise complaints bylaws officers work full time, Monday to Friday, 8am until 4:30 pm., exactly when you don’t need them for a late night noise complaint. This shows the stupidity, indifference and incompetence of City Hall. When you call to have an investigator come out to see about late night noise the response is they will send someone to investigate within the next 10 business days, during regular working hours. Nothing could be more infuriating than the indifference we get from City Hall.
There were a lot more restaurants and nightclubs on King Street than there are now. I bet her condo is built on land that was once a nightclub or restaurant. Dowtown life is meant to lively & loud! You want quiet? Go to the suburbs! Leave what little is left of the "Entertainment" district.

These joints existed before you moved in. Your agent told you that it was a loud neighborhood. You knew it was a loud neighborhood....yet here you are complaining
Let's close all the business on King Street, File for bankruptcy, then ask the government to pay these business owners so she can sleep in the night properly. Next morning, we will all be paying more taxes to cover which government paid to shut down these businesses.
The good news is, now that you have a communist mayor, all businesses will be bankrupt and gone before you know it. Caracas used to be a lot noisier at one time too.
Why would you move into the entertainment district then that's been like this for over 30 years? You have no right to complain, shut up or move.

Well, you live in downtown Toronto..
Sounds like you bought a condo with poor design.
You buy a condo in the most concentrated areas of downtown and expect everyone to tip toe around you. Right.
How about the loud music from car stereo …where are the bylaws to control noise pollution ?

Sounds like first world problem. Living in the heart of the entertainment area and complaining about sounds.
The news cycle must be slow.
No consequences for anything in this city anymore. You can do whatever you want anywhere with zero opposition!!
Don't worry Karen, winter is around the corner and nobody will be using patios for 8 months.
