    I just learned this was owned by a long lost ancestor of mine, the Duc d’Epernon. He was banished and fled to England. My 7th great grandfather was born at sea during the journey. I’d give anything to see it before it falls.

    I used to (for many years) photograph old abandoned buildings and cemeteries. I still have some collecting dust - silver gelatin prints I hand coated the paper with emulsion... they always spoke to me and it was like a secret portal that transported me into another time where my heart beat louder. I've always been drawn to restoration as well, but these days limited to vintage bags, and healing sick plants...Thank you for your beautiful video - it made me realize that what was considered a waste of time by many in my life, is what actually makes me feel alive and connected, even for just the joy of it...

    Sadly, it isn't just the cost to restore it, but to maintain it. Unless someone is uber wealthy enough to do that, it is probably not saveable. Too sad to lose such beauty.

      Kana Michelle you’re absolutely right! Had no idea the cost of maintenance and restoration! But if a billionaire got ahold of this they would probably destroy the character and beauty of the home and turn it into some fancy ultra mid century modern Hollywood retreat🙄

      I agree with you whole heartedly. I'm sorry to be a "negative Nelly" but words and love do not a building make. It takes money, manpower, resources and a persistent will to overcome all obstacles of which there would be many. Although beautiful, inspiring and one-of-a kind precious that it is it is only a thing. An object. There is a dignity in futility. To let it go. Let bygones be bygones. This building appears to be too far gone. Salvage what is salvageable then make room for fresh new memories and life. It is death now. Replace it with life.

      Structures like this should be saved by business' and corporations; organizations who can afford to maintain them. There are so many other options for these other than making them a home again. People can't afford a staff to keep them up, and good luck at finding people who want to go back into the service industry. I could see this place as a bed and breakfast, small hotel, reception venue, private school, etc...

    I feel the same way about abandon places. It's sad to see something so beautiful falling to pieces. After the gilded age it became too expensive for one family to run. history probably played a part in making the family abandon their estate.

    Sadly its not worth restoring. This is France the cost to restore it would be in the millions and because of their insane politics their taxes have created a circumstance where you can buy fully intact and restored castles for a fraction what they would cost to build. A comparable french castle in excellent condition would be under 2 million.

    • @ClassicFrank
      @ClassicFrank 6 років тому +7

      SithLordmatthew Why are French castles in decent condition not that expensive? I know their taxes are extremely high, but still.

    • @SithLordmatthew
      @SithLordmatthew 6 років тому +8

      I'm not french well a little bit but only a fraction. I have tried to understand this as well as to me its insane. They have income taxes they have property taxes that seem to be based on rent potential still not sure what that means. They got wealth taxes where they charge a % every year of what you own. They have value added taxes which is a sales tax that hits every thing every step of the way and can be close to 20%. They have a capital gains tax on property that can be like 45% its not enough to say they have high taxes because we cannot comprehend systems this corrupt with so many layers. Still I may buy one one day but the system they have means I can't be there more then 6 months at year or that wealth tax kicks in and its on assets you own anywhere in the world.

    • @TheSanarossOne
      @TheSanarossOne 6 років тому +14

      Frank Rich Well to make it simple : you buy a restored or well preserved castle ready to live in, you pay only one tax on the sale.
      You decide to take this castle : you pay the fees + taxe. Then you take it to the local authorities to approve the restauration plans (fees). You contract an architect and team (fees + taxes). You undergo multiple inspections. You have to upgrade the building to a now ready to live in instead of a ruin. (more fees) The cost of it all will end up scaring you away. And if you are lucky enough nothing else... But if not, take a lawyer and start a fight with the local community that wants it to be a museum open to all (fees). France is fun... From afar and once in a year.

    • @ClassicFrank
      @ClassicFrank 6 років тому +3

    Taxes,taxes, and more taxes.......is probably the biggest culprit!!
    People please THINK about who you vote for because it makes a difference!!
    Somewhere down the line in this family, somebody died and death taxes take an enormous amount of money and the other people in the family can not afford to maintain the Chateau on what little amount of money left over.
    And this is just one of many types of taxes the French people have to pay.

    It would be fascinating to see photos of it when it was maintained. I always wonder what events took place to start the steady decline of a structure like this. Either the family died out, or ran out of money I suppose. It's interesting that there are blue tarps draped over most of the roof, so someone out there is trying to prevent further decay. It's sad to think children must have run up and down those upstairs halls, and a string quartet probably filled the ballroom...

    27 MILES outside Paris? If someone spent millions they might earn millions from an estate in this location.

    This happens because the lower and middle classes rise up in value and wealth, but the aristocracy don't because they are fighting to retain their old wealth without taking risk to grow it. That means the salaries of the working class rise loads over time, so the aristocracy no longer have the means to afford those higher salaries. Interesting, isn't it, how this era of building could only have happened when the difference in wealth between the ultra rich and the working class are at their widest gulf in history (which happened because of high taxation). Had the aristocracy loaded all their wealth into bitcoin 10 years ago then they could have kept their mansions in pristine state. If you don't risk it, then you don't gain it.

    If it is possible to find out where you lived in your previous lives... I wouldn't be surprised that you actually was one of owner. Otherwise there can be no explanation of somebody "heart's wishes".

    Как жаль, правда жизни такова, рожать побольше детей и тогда будет кому там жить и не потерять родовое гнездо!
