To those of you looking for fashion internships... don't be hard on yourselves. There's a reason why girls like this get amazing jobs at such a young age. Colby is a friend of a friend, and I've met her. Her family is very rich and well-connected, which is how she landed this job as well as her Teen Vogue internship. Don't worry, you can make it without initial connections. It's a lot harder, but in the end, you can be proud of your accomplishments because you actually put in the hard work!
I'm 17 and my first internship at a fashion magazine starts this summer. I got replies to all of the magazines I applied for except for one, so don't let your age stop you! I actually started gaining experience at 14, but most of the experience on my CV I did in the last 8 months. Money's a struggle in my house so I started out with no connections or privileges, but I've still managed to go to London Fashion Week (twice), interview Nicola Formichetti, and write for tons of blogs and websites - all in the space of 8 months. So don't expect opportunities to come to you, make your own!
Laura Lumbayi I'm in England so you don't have to be in University to intern. But you do have to be 18, luckily I turned 18 a few days before my internship started
Aishaaxn No worries :) Most of my experience was online. Write your own blog, contact blogs you like and ask to contribute. Lots of blogs look for contributors to cover events too which is good for networking and adding to your portfolio. If you're looking to get into media, lots of big companies do workshops and programmes to get young people involved so check their websites. If you're in the UK check out media trust or creative access too :)
I think people should really stop bashing on this girl. Interning with as huge a brand as Phillip Lim is highly unrealistic for girls her age, but she is clearly a driven, hardworking, and intelligent girl. Perhaps she did gain this opportunity through money or connections, but it's not cool to denounce her based on her background. The fact that she is utilizing her privileges and channeling her energy into working, gaining experiences, and contributing to the industry is already really impressive. She's got advantages that we'd all like to have, and maybe it's a tad bit unfair that she does, but life's not fair. The fashion industry, especially, is not a fair world.
Fashion is all about who you know more than what you know. And you can build that, I have started interning since i was 16 now i am 19 doing my 5th internship and my current boss have connection within Vogue. To get to the point where I am, I was like her I go 30 mins before the call time and leave 2 hours after the time i could leave. I would wake up 3 am for a 5am shoot. . You wont be notice if you just put 100% effort into something .. but you will if you put 200% or more in..
I honestly love her drive! I'm in fashion too and love to see her starting so young and being so passionate. She's really going to get far in the industry(:
@lightyagami2294 Yeah I hate it that peopole who are rich or have friends who have connections w/ major designers have oppertunities like this handed to them. If they work hard and do amazing things, like Anna Wintour for example, that's fine. But if they don't, it sucks for the people who have to do the dirty work and wait until 5-10 years or so just to achieve her internship that she started at 15 years old. I'm not bashing Colby in any way, shape, or form, but it just really frusterates me!
@MotionPictureMuse i think you're right ... i want to work hard for it i get it because i have talent not because i have money ... You can't bye Talent , just shame for who choose for girls who have money instead of hard working girls with talent , i do not say that she not have talent but if she have the money it's easy .. life is hard
this is really unfair. If you want an internship. You must receive college credit. OH, ALL but RICH WHITE 15 year olds. I wanted to go into fashion, but the shallowness and favoritism makes me change my mind
I think you got more chances in london or L.A , NY where i live " Belgium " there's nothing :p suck soooo badly i know if i had the chance to live over there i would do so much more then i do here ... life is hard , got to find myself a job over there and move :D and finally do what i realllllyyyy want to do

So jealous!!!!!!!! It's great that she's diving into the industry so early! She must have good connections to land an internship like that.
