Exactly. I've liked to wear watches my whole life, but have only REALLY been into watches the past 5 years. And have been guilty of this numerous times and that was exactly my experience.

@@garylangford6755 Too true! I cannot see in person most of the watches I’m interested in, so online is the primary/only avenue for me. And that lends itself to stacking purchases.

1 - Don't tell yourself that you can't afford that $2000 watch you 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 want while you're buying a $300 watch every month. Save for your watches - I promise you it's worth it.
2 - Go to the brick and mortar stores and get 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 in hand and on the wrist, don't worry if you can't afford it or you didn't like it in photographs - try it on anyway, it's the best way to understand what you like. And I can't tell you how many times I've left a boutique in love with (and have subsequently bought) a watch that wasn't even on my radar before I got it in hand.
3 - Take some time in between choosing which watch you're going to buy next and actually buying it. Sit with the decision, make sure it's love, not lust. There's no hurry.
4 - All those orange dials and no orange Certina PH DS 200 / 500 / 1000m?? Jeez Rob!

Get a Timegrapher. It’ll help you understand if you picked up a watch with a bad movement, if it needs regulation, or if a full service is required. This is especially true with second hand purchases and vintage pieces. A Timegrapher will also help you appreciate how a movement works, and eventually you can learn to regulate movements if you want. Overall, it’s a great tool to help you grow into the mechanical side of the hobby and keep you from buying poorly functioning watches.

Can you recommend a good timegrapher?

  • @TennesseeMike

Here’s a few that come to mind. I think it’s important to have an outlet in the hobby that is not just buying watches. Flipping can be good to help you experience different watches, but buy smart. Most importantly, get plugged into a good positive community.

Good advice! I did get a bit carried away with buying, but this year I've sold several pieces while only buying one (Citizen Promaster Land AT6080-53L - a fantastic tool watch). I believe I've got a decent handle on my preferences, so I can spend a bit more on 1 or 2 nicer watches, but I still enjoy & want to keep most of what I now have. I'm pretty sure I want my collection to continue to fit in my 12-slot watch box (after it expanded into a 2nd watch box in the previous 2 years), and I'm probably stabilizing in 6-10 pieces range. I'm on the "less is more" track, but still figuring out how much less. Even if I could own all the watches in the world that I like, I still couldn't buy the time to enjoy them all. Choosing is fun anyway.

Truly terrific and sound advice! Huge fan of this channel. I recently got caught up in a FOMO myself on a micro-brand that notoriously sells out quickly! I would advise that sometimes just save up for that grail watch of your dreams, rather than trying to satisfy your longing by buying a dozen cheaper watches. Also, collect because you like the watch, not as an investment...there are better investments out there! Most of all, WEAR THE WATCH...don't let them set in a safe. Finally, keep a balance in life....do not overspend and wind up wearing a $15k watch while you have socks with holes in them, LOL.

I do have a bit of an impulsive/obsessive tendency, so I have to be careful when a watch catches my attention. Learned to give myself at least a month to make sure it's not an impulse, if I still am thinking about and desiring a watch after a month has passed, then the considerations for acquisition starts to get serious.

I like the advice that you don’t necessarily have to buy a watch even though you (really) like it. Also, as others have said, the watch needs to match your lifestyle, or to put it differently, for me, a watch has to have a “use case,” so that I have some occasion to wear it. Hard for me at least to make a use case for a pure dress watch at this point.

I thought your last point was kind of interesting... I realise that I have recurring honeymoon periods. I don't switch watches every day. I have 6 watches and I ended up wearing and thoroughly enjoying each of them every day for a few weeks. And then after a non-defined period when it feels like it's time to switch, I wear one of my other watches for a few weeks. The only exception is my G-shock GW-M5610 which I wear whenever I do something with a risk for damage or don't want to be bothered by weight.

Just one from me. Try it on before you buy it (if you can). Even if your buying online, if an AD is in your town and they stock them go in show interest and try it on your wrist …then buy online if it’s cheaper. So many bought that just are not right, too big too tall or just uncomfortable.

The really tricky one you touched on is the one about liking but not needing to own. To some extent I often feel that within my typical price range, if I really connect with the merits of a watch, I'd like one almost just to keep a record of my approval and support for it. That's not feasible, and I know this, but it is also surprisingly tricky to go from that to actually deciding how to decide that a certain watch should be owned and thus the purchase could be truly justified. There are a few instances now, and this has been slowly growing, where I do notice a much stronger immediate connection to a watch other than just liking and praising through critique and engagement. On 100% of my purchases I did not get to try before I buy, so while I think this could seriously help, it's not proven viable as a decider. There are also a few that retain my interest over sometimes years of being on my 'list' so to speak. Probably these ought to be prioritised, but they're also accompanied by those that are on that list because I genuinely like them. It's tricky business, and at least some sifting does happen due to perceived value (liking can be independent of price), out of budget, out of some really broad ground rules for the collection, or simply known not to be among my preferred type of watches. Still, I struggle with finding how to make the decision, and thus also struggle with setting very clear goals. The tools: yes, I almost did what you said, but also recognise I don't necessarily want to do my own fiddling. So, how many bracelets could not be sized before I have paid for a decent tool? And then even worse: outside of burgeon and very few others (all hard to get here) how do you know a decent tool from a crappy one? And if you don't have tuns of bracelets, do you end up having to buy a good miniature screw driver per watch, rather than just having it sized once? I'd love a greater variety of tool advice at different budgets. As well as which really work or not, like spring bar tool vs the different takes on pincers or pliers.

My advice....run away. ANY expensive hoppy can be detrimental to your well being. 🥴
But, on that same note...life is meant to be lived...enjoy it no matter what you do. Take those extra 2 vacation days...drive that extra 100 miles....enjoy that second piece of pie...buy that watch you're drooling over. Just be you and enjoy life.
I've been lusting after a watch for almost a year...and I finally bought it. The Seiko Speedmaster Chronograph panda dial ssc911. I absolutely love it.
I now have an auto/mechanical diver, a g-shock, an Apple Ultra (for health monitoring), and now a solar chronograph. I may get myself a dress watch. Honestly, I'm digging the Timex Marlin. I love the old school classic look. Thanks for the insightful video my fellow Michigander. Cheers

Excellent advice and thank you for posting. I have had to learn many of the lessons you touched on the hard way. One more “tip” I would add is to not be pushed off buying quartz watches or thinking you are not a real “enthusiast” unless you are buying mechanical/automatic movement watches. I own a variety of both and each comes with its own positives and negatives. And lastly, don’t worry about what others think. If you are buying a watch to impress others, you are probably missing out on the real joy of the watch collecting hobby. Buy what makes you happy.

And this is why I rarely miss one of your videos! Agree on all counts.
I went a little overboard with the buying and selling (overboard is relative of course. I'm talking 4 or 5 watches at most) but have now settled down to 4 regular rotation watches and 2 once in a while watches (still want a GMT though. Any idea if Seiko will release anymore watches using that Solar Traveler GMT movement in a smaller than a SUMO case?). And I've avoided spending too much on one single watch. Not because I don't want something luxury, but because (a) I don't have that kind of disposable income at the moment and (b) because I view it as a bit of a slippery slope, ie a $2K watch leads to a $4K watch which leads to an $8K watch and so on and so on.

No watch is gonna make you happy and most of those you want to purchase will leave your mind within a few weeks.
Low expectations, patience and building up a story about the watch is what can make it enjoyable. Otherwise you're just a victim of impulsions.
You set your mind on one piece, wait it out as much as you want, could be also to save up the money. And if it sticks to you then you make the call.
Remember buying a ton of Ali brands can equal one expensive piece you might think you can't afford, and less maintenance expenses on the long run. And buy it on a special occasion for you.
Practically no one else is going to notice it so you really want to make it special for you alone.
Also it can just be a cool gift, I bought one casio of different colors for each member of my band.

Id recommend a new watch hobbyist buy a used premium watch over a new one. Try a late 90's Breitling or omega, pay to have it serviced, see how the watch is at 20 years old. You don't need to save for years to wear a luxury brand - oldish but not yet vintage watches are excellent. You can have a nice seamaster or chronomat without saving for two years. Then when you get an idea of what it is you like, then set your eyes on a grail.
    Don't finance your watches.

@@RandomRobReviews Haha and why not! I'm a big fan of owning more than one of a particular watch I like, but usually in different colourways.

When it pertains to watches I have a three stipulations:
    1. Must be designed, assembled & tested in the United States.
    2. Must be affordable for my budget. (I never go over $650 for any particular watch.)
    3. Must be a watch that is unique, good looking and pops.

My advice: Don't buy a Bergeon. People keep on raving about them, but they are no longer what they used to be. As many former manufacturers of high-quality tools have moved their production to low-wage countries, this is quite common now and by no means restricted to watch tools. My Bergeon is in fact the worst springbar tool I've ever handled. The tips bend easily and jiggle as they can't be screwed in properly.
