There is a line in that song which said " it's understood that every single person would be elsewhere if they could" which is so very true.
What a true genius Neil was, what a tragic loss.

42 year old Rush fan here, been a huge fan all my life. "Power Windows" is one of my favorite albums. The sound and lyrics of this song is just amazing. Loving the kick-bass sound from Neil Pearts drums. And the syntheziser melody in the middle part i cant even describe with words. For gods sake, dont forget "The Analog Kid" from the album "Signals", or the masterpiece "Natural Science" from the album "Permanent Waves". That song will drop your jaw to the floor. RIP Neil "The Professor" Peart.

The thing about this song is: I know it was "personal" for Neil...He grew up in a very small town. Worked for a while at a tractor supply store. The drums in this song - they build unlike any other Rush song. The fills keep getting fuller and "angrier" as the song goes on. At the end - he's going full ham on the kit....and I feel that.

Yes it is very deep! A beautiful, touching heart wrenching piece of musical genius from the best band to ever come into my life 46 years ago. The fact that so many people like this song and many other Rush classics gives me hope about the human race. Were not as bad as many think and I believe the bad guys are in the minority. Peace to all who live by it.

    • @nickavenoso7851
      @nickavenoso7851 3 роки тому

Yeah, I can see that. Subdivisions is about an kid (Neil based the song off his childhood), who just wants to fit in, but nobody likes him so he can’t fit in, so he’s just tries to spend time by himself and do what loves. Middletown Dreams is about someone just try to get away from all the craziness and be by himself and do what he wants without being put down. So, I can’t see what you mean with the Subdivisions Part 2 comment.

  • @BaileyJim11

Totally agree with the music painting a picture with the lyrics. It's called 'Prosody'. From Wikipedia: In music, prosody is the way the composer sets the text of a vocal composition in the assignment of syllables to notes in the melody to which the text is sung, or to set the music with regard to the ambiance of the lyrics.
However, the relationship between syllables and melodic notes is just one dimension of musical prosody. According to Pat Pattison, prosody is "The appropriate relationship between elements, whatever they may be." In this sense, every element in a song can and should create prosody, because prosody is "support for what is being said."
Love your videos, and have subscribed. Welcome to the Rush Rabbit Hole

I think Power Windows is one of Rush's most underrated albums. I rank it 6th out of 19. People write it off as lightweight 80s synth-pop. It is so far away from that. Yes, it has an 80s sound but the layering and complexity is amazing. The bass and guitar work are first rate as usual, the lyrics on most of the songs are pretty meaningful. Plus, Geddy's voice is near perfection, 1978-1988 was his sweet spot IMHO.

This era is undoubtedly my favorite, followed by the brief one after this, and the one after that. Their "classics" from the early 80's and earlier songs are actually towards the bottom of my list. I just prefer the more on-point lyrics instead of those flighty fantasy, or more abstract (Tom Sawyer) ones Neil wrote earlier. And as a guitarist, NOTHING compares to Alex's ingenuity during this time! His true talent really shines through. The album before this "Grace Under Pressure" and right after this one "Hold Your Fire" and two of their best, in my very controversial opinion :p

Great to see you discovering the "songwriting" era of RUSH! A lot of "old school" rockers dismiss anything produced after Signals (1982) which is a shame as RUSH produced so much great music after.
I am a lifelong die hard fan of RUSH and when they retired I was left with a huge musical void I thought would never be filled again. However, recently I discovered a band that is without a doubt the best to come along in decades and even though it might not be apparent on the surface, they have a lot in common with RUSH. I will attach a link and hope you might do a reaction to them as I am sure they will blow your mind.

    "The office door closed early
    The hidden bottle came out
The salesman turned to close the blinds
A little slow now, a little stout
But he’s still heading down those tracks
    Any day now for sure
Another day as drab as today
Is more than a man can endure
    Dreams flow across the heartland
    Feeding on the fires
    Dreams transport desires
Drive you when you’re down -
    Dreams transport the ones
Who need to get out of town
The boy walks with his best friend
Through the fields of early May
    They walk awhile in silence
One close - one far away
But he’d be climbing on that bus
    Just him and his guitar
    To blaze across the heavens
    Like a brilliant shooting star
    The middle-aged madonna
Calls her neighbour on the phone
Day by day the seasons pass
    And leave her life alone
But she’ll go walking out that door
    On some bright afternoon
To go and paint big cities
    From a lonely attic room
    It’s understood
    By every single person
Who’d be elsewhere if they could
    So far so good
    And life’s not unpleasant
    In their little neighbourhood
    They dream in Middletown…"

When i purchased 'Power Windows' back in the day, it was with a certain trepidation. I say this because, (and i know a lot of fans will disagree), their previous album had left me somewhat underwhelmed, with, imo its tendency to err too heavily towards keyboard textures! So when it was released, i was hoping there would be a return to a guitar driven sound at the expense of the former albms over reliance of synth motifs. I couldn't have been more wrong in my longings for a more typical Rush, rock guitar approach, but here's where it gets interesting! 'Power Windows had actually doubled up in its big keyboard approach, at times sounding like they were at battle with the machines they were using, and i was completely bowled over! My belief is that in the space of a mere two albums, they had mastered the meshing of both styles, and in the process written some of their most emotional material! I don't have a favourite song, as the whole album blends so seamlessly into one remarkable piece of art. I believe i had learned my lesson to never doubt Rush, as they are always one step ahead of the game! After 'Permanent Waves' and 'Hemispheres', it is my third favourite Rush album. Something i thought was impossible in my eyes back in '84! The Kings are dead, long live The Kings!! 👑

This is not hard rock or prog metal Rush. What it lacks in musical audacity it makes up on thematic depth. I see this song as the sequel to "Subdivisions".

This depresses me, not because your reaction wasn't good, but because Neil is gone--and consequently--Rush is gone. Alas.
