  • "These days are a great boon for those on the earth. But the others are random, doomless, they bring nothing. One man praises one kind of day, another another; but few are the ones who know. One time one of these days is a mother-in-law, another time a mother. Happy and blessed is he who knows all these things and does his work without giving offense to the immortals, distinguishing the birds and avoiding trespasses" (Hesiod, Works and Days, trans. Most, 822-828).

In this lecture, I present a philosophical introduction to Hesiod's two great poems: the Theogony and the Works and Days. I argue that the concept of individuality is central to understanding the importance of Hesiod's work, given that he was the first writer in the Western literary tradition to stand forth as an individual poet and insert himself and his biography into the content of his songs. His newfound sense of individuality appears to derive from his encounter with the numinous when he met the Heliconian muses. Yet, Hesiod is involved in a paradox, since in order to articulate his new identity rooted in the realm of the wholly other, he still must employ the concepts, images, and metaphors derived from his previous experience. As a result, the mythology that Hesiod fashions is substantially shaped by the pessimism that his infused his previous life as a Boetian peasant. This pessimism is then examined as it emerges in central episodes in the Theogony and the Works and Days.
