I have my dad’s 150 that he bought new in 1962. Still going strong. Thanks.

Thank you for the video. I was fortunate to acquire the same drill press from my father in-law and want to restore and use. All your information is greatly appreciated!

Thx for the video. I have a 103 I want to restore and this gave me the motivation to tear in to it. Wasn't sure what to expect by your intro but I like your video and like your repositioning of the camera to show exactly what you were doing. I ended up watching all your videos as I garden and raise chickens as well. I like your style. Down to earth, no BS, respectful of others...we need more people like you in this world.

Brian hi I think you have a 150 series. What I’m learning is there was a 100 series and then came a 150 series. I have a model number 103-23140, and that is a 150 series. They are great drills but parts are hard to come by, because they are WW2 era machines.

Thank you! I picked up a Craftsman 150 on Craigslist not long ago. Needs some serious cleanup but the hardware is in great condition. This video is saving me a pretty good chunk of time on the process. Can't wait til it's as good as new!

Minor update: I found the "born on date" on the underside of the base. It's a raised surface forged into the iron. 6-10-1966. Not easy to get to, but now I know!

"We can't change the past but we can change the future" I'm going to use that. Thanks.
I just pickup a similar unit, a 103.24321, a little bigger, same vintage, which works but needs a complete disassembly and paint job.

Its nice to see someone else that does things the same way. Did yours separate off that collar bolt under the pully.

I enjoyed your video. It was exactly what I was looking for. I have this same drill press, but I am unable to work on it due to health. It was nice to see exactly how it comes apart so maybe I can do this in the future. Thank you.

I just bought one so here I am. I was a machinist/ CNC programmer now retired. I needed a press and waited for a decent one at a decent price and this one came up. I trust craftsman from those days so when I checked the spindle runout and bearing play and they looked and felt good, I bought it. The guy had the belt on two different pulleys out of line, with the motor tilted at about 15 degrees to try and get the belt straight lol. The bottom lock with the clasp that holds the motor parallel to the column was disconnected so he could get that angle. He had no clue, but it did run like that and didn't break the belt on him. It's a bit worn, I will replace it. I am hoping I can find where to obtain parts if I need them. The top cover is missing. I need to find the lubrication points, there are no zerk fittings. Also wondering if spindle bearings can still be found. I see mine is missing the spindle locking bolt, I wasn't sure what was missing there, now I know. Good job, good video. The only feedback, lithium grease is way better than WD40. Question, the pin you knocked out, was it a roll pin or a dowel pin?

Thank you so much. I had just walked in from my old/new garage. Just bought new/old house and found this drill press in the garage. A Craftsman 150 and came in to just check before doing anything to it, thinking there was no hope in finding anything and here you are with exactly what I needed. I am saving this video as my reference manual as I progress on the drill. Oh, mine is a bench version.

I am impressed with how much you accomplished in under 20 minutes! Came here because I inherited my father's Craftsman 150 table top drill press. It could use some refurbishing. Thanks for making this and the follow-up video. Very helpful. Subscribed.

    Hi,
I recently bought the same drill press. It works fine accept the chuck is little out of wack. Which i do not know from where to buy? Also the spring is not taking drill back up after the drill job is done. I do not know how to fix that spring.

    • @blackmcgyver7512
      @blackmcgyver7512  5 років тому +1

You have to wind the spring before reattaching it to the handle. In other words, wind the spring first an then attach it to the handle! Hope this helps.

Quick question. I just got me a used craftsman 17” drill press like yours and noticed the bushing is cracking at above the chuck. Plus the ribbed side bar is broken off at the bottom. Lastly, the crank handle is broken. I’m in California. Any idea where I can get these for my press? Do you also have videos on how you recondition this press and replace any of the parts bad with mine?

I have this same droll press, but this video did not answer my questions... In your video, the top part was already off of the pole, mine has fallen and is resting on the plate and I don't know how to lift it back to where it is supposed to be. And in your next video, it was already finished, so I didn't get to see how you put it back on and locked it into place... Please help. Thx

Drill press not droll press. 🤦‍♀️

Ok, ok, i tried not to, but i have to say something. The quality of older tools and machinery is not because the refining process was "more pure". Metallurgy has actually advanced quite a bit since the 50s. We have alloys and refining processes that are far superior to what was capable back then. The problem is, most of the tools you find on the shelf are not made with those quality materials these days. The decline of manufacturing quality is a net result of many, many factors. Much of it has to do with overseas production, poor quality control, cheap parts, cut corners, etc etc. In many cases, simple robust mechanical design has been replaced with cheaper or more complicated solutions. The inclusion of electronic components, plastic molded parts, etc. There are many, many factors that contribute to the decline of quality products and the death of US based manufacturing. But the simplest way to say it is, they "don't make em like they used to" because they're now made en-masse in overseas factories by unskilled workers from inferior materials based on inferior, cheaper designs.
