The Raconteurs Reveal New Album Mixing Technique for ‘Help Us Stranger’

- Jack White shows us a technique he developed for doing master mixes. The Raconteurs are mixing their new album with Vance Powell at Sputnik Sound.

One of their new songs “Shine The Light On Me"" is broadcast with an FM transmitter from inside the studio. Outside in the car park, the band listens to the broadcast on an unused FM frequency. (The broadcaster only sends a small powered signal about a distance of a hundred feet or so.)
The band uses a walkie talkie to give notes on the mix to the engineer (Vance) back in the control room. This way the artist can mix in real time, and hear exactly what the song sounds like on the radio as well, this time through the amazing sound system of a Tesla Model S. This speeds up the process of mixing greatly and reduces the amount of remixes that occur after artists feel they’ve “got it” in the studio, only to listen in the car on the ride home realizing that the kick drum is too loud!

I was partners in a Nashville jingle business in the early 80s.
Back then, we put our mixes on cassettes and listened to them in one of our cars in the parking lot.

My highschool Recording Arts teacher showed us stuff kinda like this and highly recommend it! It is a super good idea, because often people don't think at first to test their songs on other systems, especially car stereos.

yeah, also, studies show that pick up trucks increase testosterone levels whilst tesla's (because of their lack of fossil fuel) decreases them. Fair word of warning lads.

Years ago I read an interview with Jack, must've been Rolling Stone, and he talked about this exact process for listening back to his new solo material. He felt the car was the best place to hear playback since people listen to more music in their car than anywhere else so if it sounds good cruising down the road then you'll want to listen to it anywhere. I will say it is cool to see it in action.

I think the deal with him is he just doesn't like how modern technology is treated, rather than it's use overall
He actually loves technology, he just likes the physical element of hearing and making music, he talks about vinyl in and interview, he said ''You can watch a movie on your phone and get something out of it, but when you're driving and you see the cinema, you know thats the real thing, where you really watch movies, the same with music''

Why do people think Jack doesn't like technology? Jack loves technology. Notice how he got new equipment to press records in TMR? Everyon eelse restores antique machinery. Jack was the only one willing to invest in the new tech for this industry. Just because he likes the results of old tech in recording, doesn't mean he is opposed to new tech in general. Where do you guys come up with this shit?

I’ve heard this from someone before that produces. He said he would always take the song out to his car and listen to it over the car stereo to make sure it sounded good over a regular sound system(like what most people have)
Haha... The ol' car stereo trick! I use to burn my mix to a CD then run out, listen in the car, take notes then go back and tweak.
Yes been there as well. I've been thinking about taking the laptop out and connecting it directly into the stereo to mix on the go but I'm no raconteur so its not needed.

Used to do this all the time to hear what our stuff sounds like on the radio. Wish I hadn't of sold that. It was a kit. Took forever to make it.for me anyway.

For the full FM effect you need to compress/compand the bejeebus out of everything. Make sure the engineer hits the post in the beginning, too. Nice Slim Phatty, BTW.

I am watching and listening to everything I can find about the new album and the tour. It’s going to be absolutely fabulous! I am also pleading anywhere and everywhere for you guys to PLEASE play in North Carolina, and due to my advanced age, at a smaller venue than an arena. Jack, I know you like the intimacy of a smaller venue, and I like the General Admission so I can get close to the stage. (I must see those fingers work their magic on your guitars!!!). Do an old broad a favor, will you??? Love you!!

I just started mixing and trying to record. I go out to my car after every adjustment. This was cool to see
Unfortunately, commercial radio stations also add a ton of compression to everything as well, so unless you add some multi-band stereo mastering compression post-mix, then you still won't get the full commercial radio audio experience.
