I will definitely be adding these drills to my practice sessions. I broke 100 for the first time ever yesterday and it was a great feeling. I think these drills will make that consistent as I work to continue lowering my score. Love your videos and practice tips.
This is awesome. I just had a 6 foot birdie putt two days ago to break 80 for the first time ever and lipped out! Couldn't be more inspiring timing. Thank you for this!
Well doneTyler. I'm sure it's just round the corner!
@@barrybr1 i feel your pain guy!
I made a 6 footer to shoot 89… now I need to break 80
You have REALLY helped my game. Your tip about chipping- take the club back close to your right thigh- major help. And I added that tip to my iron shots- hitting them SO much crisper with power. I'm 6' 5", so before, I was having trouble with consistency because getting my arms too far from my body was disaster. Now my swing is tight- compact- major improvement. And my chipping? I am now focused on holing them out, instead of hoping I don't chunk or blade it. Major confidence builder and ENJOYING the short game, instead of dreading it. Thank you Matt!!
This is the BEST drill set I've seen. So simple to do and improvement seems inevitable. Thanks for this!
This is a great drill. Spent some time with it yesterday. If I'm honest, it took about 6 tries to just get to past the first set to graduate the sand section were I was immediately penalized back to stage one. The risk of penalty and the potential reward of eventually quickly getting past stage 1 really caused me to stop and pay attention to many flaws and factors are hampering my chipping. Eventually, I was able to fairly easily get through stage 1. I will likely have to commit the same process to the sand, exclusively, for some time before I can actually get to the third stage with the actual rules. Good work!
I like the idea of adding pressure to the drills. Consequences for missing are way more important than just “banging away” at the range for sure. These will help me get better and I love to do the work so I’m confident. Made my morning. Thanks!!!
I have been playing golf since I was 12, and this year I broke 80 for the first time at age 29! My previous PB was 82 and I shot a 75 a few weeks ago and then a 79 a few days ago. I never thought it would happen! I have played nearly 40 rounds of golf this year and learned by trial and error, never taken a lesson in my life. If there is one positive thing Covid has done, its not allowing me to work this summer and play tons of golf!
Good for you! It can be done. I think it takes more concentration that the average golfer wants to put into their game.
Matt! I want to say thank you. Seriously, in the most sincere way possible. You are a fantastic teacher. Your lessons have helped me play better, but also with consistency. Consistency is something that I struggled with for a while, and now, I have been able to put that in my rearview because of your drills. Plus, you seem like a super cool guy, and I hope that I get to bump into you one day so I can shake your hand and personally thank you for helping me. Thanks again, buddy.
Just broke 80 for the first time after 12 years being stuck at 81. Very similar drills and a rebuilt swing! Love your channel
Erik Bacher lie
@@adamgeo597 Congrats
Thanks for the videos, really like his positivity on the course, this has helped me not get so upset over bad shots! I did these drills and and I shot a 78 and a 79 in back to back weeks..I was shooting in the low 80’s so I was close but this got me under that magic number.
How to break 80? Only play front 9.
i broke 80 finally, the problem was that its a par 3 and 4 course only :D. Its par 62 and i hit 76. On a regular 18th hole course i have never broken 90...
LOL!! That's one way for sure
Right! I did break 40 on a par 3 only 9 hole course yesterday with a 36 so if I play twice around, I end up with a 72, that counts yeah? no? Darn, oh well
@@bigalthecrusher I would say ya, golf is golf no matter. I play with a guy who thinks the nine holers aren't real golf but yet he can't play par or under par on that course so I guess it is real golf.
😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 This is absolutely hilarious to me!
I’ve been getting lessons from a great coach and supplementing your drills on my own time. I’ve already dropped 16 shots from worse to best round of the year. 109 to 93. Ball striking is the only thing holding me back, I’ll pure one then chunk one then top one yada yada. Thanks for the slapping content.
Didn’t start golf until I was 54 and never golfed as a kid
Last year was my fifth year of golf and I broke 80 on the quite difficult course.
Shot a 76 and I am thrilled with your videos thank you
Breaking 80 just the thought of it sounds harder then actually doin it. Love the drills!
@MrShortGame Golf. I'm new to golf and I'm shooting well over 100. This is my new drill at the range and on the course.
Great stuff. I'm hovering around that mid to low 80 mark. I went 74 once! everything short was a great shot or putts just went in. And Key was I was just marking my score and not looking at how far under or over I was. Mental game is my biggest challenge.
right... the score happens no matter what. one job at a time!
Keeping my hands in and not rotating open like you teach is working wonders for me. Was shanking everything suddenly and watched your video on long irons and driver and my last two rounds were 83, 81 in the wind and rain. Left loads of shots on the course too. I’m on the way now. Cheers from Scotland.
Some of the best content I've seen on youtube helping me improve my game. Can't wait to break 80 using these drills
Spent two hours at short game.
Next round, back to back sand saves, total 83, all time low!
This summer has been between 90 and 110, so I like to think your drill really made a difference, so thank you!!!
Thanks for this and all your videos. Yesterday I shot 38 on the front 9 and choked on the back nine with a 44. I had 1 triple and 1 double on the back. Worst part I three putted 4 greens - lags were marginal and I missed the 3 and 4 footer. I also chili dipped an easy chip so I didn't get up and down. Really felt the pressure!!!
Great Video. Many Thx. Shooting in the high to low 80s the shortgame drill is mentally brutal, but at the same time a phenomenal practice. Did it lately with 14 good shots and failed on the 15th. Mentally very tough to start completely over again as concentration usually will go down by time. Took me 1/2 an hour to get the task finally accomplished. Looks easy to do, but is very tough. The mixture of having a pure strike in combination of mental pressure around the green - where it matters - makes it a extremly good drill. Especially the final short chip to a near pin looks so easy. Thats where those chunks are likely to happen.
For lag putts I would recomend the 8/10 drill, i .e. 10 putts from 13 yards with finishing up. Try to make 8 out of 10 with two putts. Gives a good feel for distance plus 10 different short putts between tap in and 5 footer. Takes about 15- 20 minutes using the complete putting routine.
Really great drills to practice thank you ! I always feel I'm not doing anything just hitting shot after shot at the range, now I have something to go through and practice!
This works! I did similar drills like this 5 years ago before having kids. I broke 80 3 times that summer - 78, 74, 79. Great video.
A wedge with 8 degrees of bounce is ideal for the muni & country club player. Simply open the face for more loft and bounce in green side rough. Those wedges with 10-13 degrees of bounce are for US Open rough and powder fine bunkers IMHO. Keep the knowledge coming Mrshortgame. You are getting me through this pandemic.
I tried the 3 clubs off of the tee box for one round of it on the 11th hole of my round today. The rest of the round I gained a ton more confidence off of the tee box. Ended up shooting 84 from a previous best of 88. I foresee me breaking 80 in the next week. Thanks for the awesome tips and ideas.
I learn best through repetition and turning the learning into a game if possible. I learned flags of the world with an app that makes it into a game, and I keep playing until I'm getting a perfect score. I'm learning elements of the periodic table the same way. I absolutely love this video because it takes the idea of working on specific aspects of golf and turns them into a repeatable game. The idea of five shots, but if you fail - you start over is brilliant. Playing that training game will give you tons of repetitions, while placing importance on each shot. If I'm hitting 40 shots with the driver in a row at the range, those individual shots lack importance. By using these reps to simulate a game with consequences - I think is fantastic. Thanks!
ive shot 80 5 times for my equal pb in the past 2 months... its now become more of a metal battle to crack the 70's more than physical, cheers for the practice tips!
I'm using this tomorrow !!! Totally makes sense 👌why over Complicate everything this makes it very simple and there's risk and reward I honestly think this something that will help improve my game
this is such a great vid. I broke 80 this year and much of this video hits all valid points. Over practicing on the range is more harm than anything. key for me was to identify certain problem baggage holes that no matter how straight ur driver goes (normally) on those holes you just end up hitting those baggage shots (hooks in my case with OBs). If you have the 5 wood (3/4 Hybrid) or a 3Wood fully practiced, and you can hit those with less error of a hook on those holes, you must just do that and keep the ball in play. Because if you had been shooting well on most holes and catch one real bad, its chain reaction to doom after... so identify the most problem holes on ur track of choice and play those safe. A bogey wont hurt on those over taking a triple or a double par...
Great advice! Cant wait to give it a try. Another great one is the 3' 6' 9' putting drill, all in a line, must make all 3 in a row, which putts a lot of pressure on your last putt (no pun intended)
Great video, and advice. I love how people who comment gravitate towards sarcasm and negative thoughts as their first line of defense. These drills are great at managing your potential misses as well. As you execute these shots at each station, you will hit one out of five less than ideal, and after a few hundred shots you get a picture of what a potential miss looks like. Where the great players separate from the duffers, is how they mange their misses. That’s where I always took a good round and turned it into a bad round...by hitting a shot that a miss would add at least two strokes guaranteed vs hitting a shot with a potential miss would add no worse than two. Perfect example, I played with my son at a beautiful and very difficult course in St Louis a couple of moths ago. The issue was I had not touched a club for a long while...I noticed at the range that I was not making a full turn or posting up as usual, that for me always results in a loss of distance off the tee, and irons not traveling to their number. And wouldn’t you know it, everything short...well..knowing that I played an extra club on most shots, and made sure to be at least straight off the tee...boom broke 100, and I had no business doing so on this track.
Have been playing really well these last weeks with scores in the low 80s. Hopefully some good drills and more practice can take my game to another level, now i just play on the course all the time and some warmup on the range.
I like it.... These are great. I broke 80, but not as often as I used to do. These tips will help me to get back on track... Thank you.
Absolutely love these practice scenarios Matt, definitely something I'm going to implement into my practice. 👌🏽
I have a garage simulator (SkyTrak) and while I love playing courses, the thing that helps me most are good drills that cover a wide range of skills. I'll definitely add this to my repertoire. Thanks.
I'm going to give it a try definitely. I succeded on that a couple of times already but I need to be more consistent under 80 to become a single digit hcp.
Great drills! This is a challenge that will be fun to face.
I like your style to explain the golf which very compex actually. I tried your “chip n slide” method and it really works. Short game is my problem now and its getting better by watching your video. Thanks Matt..
Makes a lot of sense. Keep it simple and quality of practice over quantity. Thanks for that.
thank you Mr Short Game! Nice and simple explication! I`m playing near of the 80, breacking 80 some times, but not consistently, so this lesson is right for me! I will practice this way! Dimitri from Argentina.
Many years ago there was a book called How to Shoot in the low 120's. What a great title.
Great tips. Better scoring starts from the hole back to the tee and not making little mistakes like duffing chips. This video highlights that very well.
This is one of your best vids. Great drills. Increased pressure to execute. Mahalo to Matt😎
Excellent Drills...starting tomorrow.
Truly appreciate these practice exercise. Looking forward to seeing some results afterwards.
I haven't broken 80 before and I'm playing again tomorrow! I don't expect it to work overnight but I'm going to focus on these drills and MAYBE get a little closer! (aim this year is to go from a 18 to a 15 handicap) 👍
Keep me posted, love to hear how it goes.
@@MrShortGame Hey Matt! I didn't get a load of time to practice the drills unfortunately and shot another 85. I really feel that getting the duff chips outta here and holing a couple extra putts and il be there so I'm going to focus on these drills and get myself a 79 real soon! Really great that you wanted to hear how it went! I will screenshot and Instagram you my scorecard when it happens. Fistbump from the UK!
Having an intentional practice routine laid out BEFORE you get to the range makes a huge difference.
Maybe disagree on a bit of this philosophically, but absolutely fantastic video. Love the content! 👍
This guys personality is golden
I do a variation of these drills when practicing and it works. I do focus more on putting drills (the around the clock drill is a great one) and my score dropped substantially. A lot of amateurs just focus on hitting their driver and 7 iron poorly. I use to be one of them.
I normally aim for a bogey a hole so my handicap isn’t that good. But every now and then, I’ll have a streak of 3-4 birdies/pars, and it’s amazing how I’m always capable of following that streak up with a triple-max the following hole, canceling out everything I just did.
"that's how you process it. If you don't your not going to break 80 anyway".. I literally laughed out loud.. Brilliant
This is so good. I’m going to do this.
Matt great drill. You have introduced the true stroke challenges for sure. I'm trying to break 82. So this is my new path! Thanks a bunch.
If you're already playing fairly consistent golf - the biggest hindrance to breaking 80 is handling pressure.
Two days ago i was playing well - started off great and ended up shooting 34 in the front 9. Opened the back with three straight pars - and all of a sudden, 69 was on my mind. I've never broken 70 (shot 70 3x already) so I was gunning for best score.
As soon as I thought of it. Pressure mounted. Swing changed. Ended up shooting 40 in the back.
I'm still gunning for a 69 some day - it is still a goal. But what I realized that day was that I didn't have to go pin hunting every time for me to shoot low. Top priority is to avoid trouble and stay clear of the hero shots.
Alright, I am gonna give this a shot.... I have already dropped a few shots with some of your other tips. Will keep you posted..
I’ve played four rounds since the courses opened, 81 82, 81,83 what’s killing me is exactly those short little guys around the green! Thanks Matt!!!
Love these tips!!
Makes sense to me. Thanks mr. SHORTGAME, CHEERS!
Very focused, clear and concise content, can't wait to try it all. Many thanks!
It's good to understand the sport from a more professional level to make it easier to achieve a better level of performance with ease & fun to be more social while having a better golf experience. Can't wait for the season to change
I started out hitting around 110-120. I watched a few UA-cam videos on driving straight, and I brought my game into the 90's. I then watched a few videos on chipping and pitching and I've been able to score in the mid-80's, with my lowest round yet being an 84. I know if I keep practicing and put my ego aside (shelved my driver and use 3W almost all the time now), I will break 80 sooner than later. My biggest issue is not being able to chip within 5-ft when around the green. I usually hit left or right about 10-ft, which sometimes I make the putt and sometimes I don't . If I could just chip within 5-ft, I could take off at least another 5-6 strokes per round.
That’s tremendous, thank you. Hopefully will sort my chipping yips too.
I’m liking this one Matt! Great drill!
Picked up a club in 2014, joined a golf club, got 22 handicap, broke 80 twice this year off 11! The key is to play away from danger & hopefully have a good day on the greens imo.
So glad I found this video. Plan on taking this to the practice range ASAP!
Very helpful tips. Please create more drills and practices to improve short games! I am working on using five balls!
I shot five 80s in a row at a course.. when i finally decided to work there.. gues wat?! I broke 80.. but for real this is an excellent process of golf skills needed to break 80 esp. if u are already a "bogey golfer".. i see people hit for hours and weeks at the range but cannot group 5 chips and pitches to a target 20ft on the green.. Advice: Just like his name suggests: START WITH IMPROVING YOUR BASIC SHORT GAME ABILITY. These skills and concepts will carry over into the long game. i.e. i can "chip" a 6 iron.. 170yds consistently.. it is the same motion.. but in all honesty, i wish everyone luck but i am glad this game is hard and not everyone can break 80.. (Weekend golfers deserve and are happy to break 100.) Otherwise i will have to start Breaking 70! lol.. Good Luck
If I could practice these drills I could break 80 most of the time. As a 28 handicap playing once or twice a week I find getting into the low 90’s difficult, and I realize that I do need to practice, but life gets in the way even thoughI am retired. I always arrive early at the course and practice chipping and putting for a limited time and hit into a net to warm up the muscles, but that’s the extent to “my” practice.
A few years ago I was playing to an 18 handicap but medical conditions have limited my performance. Such is life, but the enjoyment of the game and friend make my time playing fun.
Great honest comment. Keep having fun!
Was on my way to totally break 80 for the first time..
Plus 1 after 9 holes..
. then at the turn, the skies opened up ... like the scene from caddyshack when the minister got struck by lightning....
The rain camouflaged the tears on my cheek 😢
Pleased to say since watching this I did break 80. Good job coach.
Thanks dude, gonna give it my best
I will do it as your way, thanks Mr Shortgame
These drills are excellent for most golfers. Notice on the short game he paid little attention to actually getting close to the pin. Some of the putts he left himself were not gimmes. What the drills do is make you comfortable with hitting 3 key shots plus the driver. This will get you to the 80's. To break 80 you better be on an easy course or playing from one of the forward tees. These drills will help you play tougher courses in a respectable manner and that's fine too. I also think this method will stop you at 78-79. To go lower than these scores you will have to hit the driver with some consistency, hit fairway woods or hybrids 150-200 yards and make a very high percentage of 4 foot putts.
awesome info ! super excited to hit the range now.
Great video, really identified the gaps in my game that I need to work on in my practice. Any particular reason you chose 40ft putts?
Brilliant mate! Thanks! 💪😎🏌
Every time I get close to breaking 80, the real me shows up! LOL
Change your mindset think positive.
That's what usually happens to me too, 16, 17, and 18 for some reason I can be having a great round and those three holes will just ruin it for me.
james that happened to me today but still squeaked a 79 with a double bogey on 18 lol
@@andrewnelson3112 NICE!! I've only ever shot 79 two times and haven't done it since about 9 years ago. I usually shoot between 80-86 depending on the course and what part of my game doesn't show up.
same here ! haha soon we will tho!
This is actually a great drill. Thanks
One of your best videos yet. Gamification is great!
Great drill.....will try for sure.
Love this style of practice
They should do a big break comeback with all golf youtubers... I'd definitely watch that shit!
I like this drill. One question for you. I like my 52° to chip with but I use my 58° in the sand. Can we change the clubs that we use for each area of the short game practice?
“There’s 3 keys to breaking 80, tee shots, short game, and putting”...or in other words “to break 80 you must be good at all aspects of golf”
you forgot approach shots... uh oh
That isnt the point
Good irons too
This guy's most watched video's are his cheating tips. I broke 70 after watching those! 😎
Excellent recommendation.
this is going to be my "spring training" drill(s). Thanks👍
Love this concept. Great way to train!!
Tried this the other day. Everything went great until I duffed the short shot and went back to the pitch... needless to say my playing partners and the group behind me were pissed.
hahaha that's hilarious!
Sorry to be so off topic but does anyone know of a way to log back into an Instagram account?
I somehow forgot the account password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me.
@Esteban Boden instablaster =)
@Collin Terrell i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im in the hacking process now.
Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Collin Terrell it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thank you so much you really help me out !
Great video going to try this tomorrow!
Great drills to try. Will have to modify the short game drills though. Of the 6 closest courses to me that I play, none have a practice sand trap.
Definitely will be implementing this !!
Broke 80 (77) for the first time this year but I know that 80 to 85 is my real range. When i broke 80, my greens in regulation and two putting were on display. Plus, I played a mid handicapper course which helped. My advice, practice your short game a lot. Putting and chipping drills do work. You just have to do them.
Dude, this is your best video.. Love you Mr Short Game!!!
Good sesh thanks Matty!
Gonna try the bunker drill with my caddy on a pot bunker 5x5x5 (feet) pot hole bunker on my course in Turnberry. Thanks DT.
great drills though.
Excellent thankyou. Appreciate your videos so much, great stuff.
This set of drills is a great idea and will definitely give me some focus. Currently trying to break 90, but I seem to always have some holes that "blow up ".
Also, do you have a set process for reading greens?
Good tips, Thank You very much.🤓
While at the range, hit a large bucket of balls, but never use the same club twice. Start with a driver, then work your way through the rest of your clubs. I'll play my favorite course, in my head, shot by shot, while at the range. Then, I'll make a bunch of two putts with ONE ball on the practice green. I'll practice this way just prior to a round, and then play. Works great! Another thing; make sure you have proper "swing thoughts" in your head and USE THEM while playing. And don't expect to break 80 on a difficult course until your game is completely predictable. Sometimes fun trumps score. Where did I get this method? Why, Mr. Short Game, of course.
Love this Matt, thank you! Looking forward to putting it into 'practise'!
