- This is the second time that the drain plug on the '99 4Runner has stripped out. Find out how I've solved this annoying recurring issue.

Good video
Thanks for watching!
It is Super..
But Ideal 85W140 LS👍🏻
Thanks for checking out the video!
Flat side of crush washer goes against the bolt, not the diff. I didn't realize this either and did some wrong. Hopefully it won't be an issue.
Good to point this out. Thanks for watching👍🍺
Was than oem crush washer you were adding that anti seize to? Or can I get the assortment set for harbor freight?
That is an OEM washer, but the drain plug is essentially a copper ring. The crush washer goes on the fill plug. I've heard elsewhere that the issue is most likely the difference in metals causes some corrosion between the housing, washer, and bolt that ends up seizing all the pieces. Thanks for watching🍺👍
Question: I was recommended 75w-90 and at 14:52 in your video it says 75w-90 as well, why do you recommended going with 85w-140 instead? I too have 4.88's (Sierra gears)
85w-140 is the recommendation from East Coast Gear Supply, who setup both the front and rear diffs on my '99 4Runner (eastcoastgearsupply.com/ft-2536-ecgs-gear-oil-recommendation.html). That's what I've been using on them and so far have no reason to complain. I will be doing the rear again here soon, so I may have a looksie in an upcoming video. Thanks for checking out my channel!!
@@WeekendWrenchTurner thanks for the quick response! I just got 75w-90 Amsoil. Hopefully it'll suffice with my 4.88's!
As you can see, gear oil type and weight is a matter for debate. I think your choice is just fine 👍
I have a J 120 truck (GX470) my service manual says 29FTLBs. I had one stick on me and I agree the extractor bits work best.
Yeah, I think they misprinted the torque in the 4Runner manual. Thank for watching 👍🍺
How big of a difference do the new gears feel to you? When your cruising at highway speeds say 65MPH are your RPM's higher than before? I really want 4.88's just wanted to hear your thoughts. Thx man.
It's a noticable difference in umph, especially given the fact I'm running 285/75/R16 tires (33"-ish). RPMs do run higher, but at 65 mph it's still well under 3000. From memory, they're right about 2700 when doing 70 mph. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@WeekendWrenchTurner thx for the reply. Your channel is great. Very valuable material. Keep wrenching man!
Did you have hammer the extractor in to get it not to slip when trying to loosen?
I did give it some taps, nothing real hard but enough to get it set into the rounded out hole. Thanks for watching 👍
So the front diff has only the fill/drain plug vs separate fill/drain plugs?
There are separate drain and fill plugs on the front diff on the 3rd gen Toyota 4Runners. Now I believe the ultimate issue is that instead of a crush washer, the drain plug on the these had a copper washer that causes it to become stuck. Thanks for watching!!
I am buying a 3rd Gen. What size hex head does the fill and drain take?
Normally it takes a 10mm hex, but also thoroughly clean the gunk out of it as well to help it seat. Maybe some heat too 👍🤟
My GS 350 AWD has a hex on the front diff. Wonder if would work on yours. I have to do the rear too- it has the crappy plug hex. Starting to spray it every day.
Do you know the dimensions and thread pitch? I can look at the spare I have and see if it will fit. Thanks for watching!!
@@WeekendWrenchTurner I heard some toyota guys use it (when I was poking around for info). Parts are 90341-24016
drain and 90341-18060 fill. Only a few bucks. You can check them out online. Lexus AWD sedans share parts with toyota trucks so it is likely it will fit. I bought a tundra filter and gasket.(same trans). Wish they put the hex on the rear too.
Awesome!! Thanks for the tip on that. I'm going to check it out 👍👍👍
48 ft lbs is to much it ain't going anywhere
That's what the FSM says, but yeah, after having it stuck in there it's got to be a typo! Thanks for watching 👍
@@WeekendWrenchTurner put never siez on it hand tight
That's a good idea. I'm going to try that when I'm in there again. Thanks for the tip 🍺
Why your oil drain plug look like that all gold color?
This was the first drain after swapping in 4.88 gears up front from ECGS. Always a bit of sparkles on there after the first 500 minutes 😃 thanks for watching 🍺
Holy clean undercarriage Batman! Must be a pretty new truck?
Lol, when I put in the 4.88 up front, I spent about 4 hours scrubbing the mud and crud off the cross member with a metal brush and purple power. Had to spend almost as much time cleaning the tub after showering too 😆😆😆
Why not use a different type of drain plug
I know that either here or in one other place in online there's been a suggestion of replacing this with I think it was a Sequoia front diff plug. I'll try to find it👍
@@WeekendWrenchTurner I read somewhere that a Lexus one would work it's hard to pin down what will fit.
try to find one with a 3/8" square drive rather than the hex
Make sure you dont over tightened. Also use a quality hex/allen key/socket so as to prevent future problems. Weird it stripped bout twice.
I honestly think that the torque value on these given in the FSM is too much. Even when torqued properly, which I've done several times now, they get stuck. Could be the copper washer on the steel case could be causing excessive corrosion too. Anyway, thanks for checking out my video 👍👍
Not recommend anti seize- can go in transmission oil - damage in transmsission
You'll have to damage the transmission/plug if you can't get it out 🤷
That's what she said!!! BAWAHHAA! Love IT!
Lol!!
