  • For a bit of a change I thought I would have a go at a Music hall song. This is by Harry Dacre from 1892 and to my surprise had verses. This song is sung so often with just the chorus and often as part of a Medley so here is the original song with my own orchestral arrangement of Flute,Strings,bassoon and Folk ensemble. At 0.40 seconds I couldn't help thinking that was Freddy Mercury's Grand Dad on the bike at the back which could have inspired Bicycle Race all those years later.(Apologies -couldn't resist yet again).

      Thanks Rhys. I always enjoy comments like yours as Memories and the Legacy of our elders is so important. Since I started out in Music over 50 years ago I have now become one of those elders and regularly sing the old songs to my 3 year old Grandson who I hope one day will continue the tradition of old songs. Best wishes and hope you are safe and well.

      Thanks for getting in touch. The song has been used in a variety of ways in films and adverts. There was also an album released with many versions of the songs by different contemporary singers. It was also the first time to be generated by a computer. I would be very interested to hear what inspired your Grandson to sing the song. I have a six year old Grandson and he has picked up a vast repertoire of songs and no one knows where he gets them from. To my amazement my upload has received quite a few listens and even been requested for Funerals although I only think in the capacity of a favourite song. Thanks for visiting my channel.

    Daisy Bell's traditional response is always some variation on the following:
    "Henry, Henry, Here is my answer, true:
    I'd be crazy to marry the likes of you!
    If you can't afford a carriage, there won't be any marriage,
    And I'll be damned if I'll be jammed on a bicycle built for two!"

At the time of recording I remember reading a response, similar if not the one you have kindly included and didn't record it as I couldn't establish if it was written later and who by thus presenting a copyright issue. Thanks for your comment. My Dad in his criticism of young people's Music said it would never last. He talked about good songs that were evergreens i.e Would last . This song certainly falls into that category and it is always well received when I sing it at the care homes. Now I'm the old man I despair at current Music trends and find many of today's popular songs lack construction within harmonic and melodic structure and form. The popular Music from 1950s to the 90s retained certain qualities but when I listen to a lot of contemporary popular songs I doubt they will be sung for as long as Daisy Daisy.
      There will be exceptions of course and some good ones will filter in no doubt. I suspect a lot of modern songs rely on technology a little too much allowing repetitive loops without a solid harmonic building block underlying a tune
      Constructed with step wise movement and chordal melodies.It is those clever melodic devises like passing notes, auxiliary notes etc that make for a good melody line. Daisy Daisy moves quite a lot from stepwise movement but the chordal structure is solid so it works well. Young composers need to study those techniques to ensure they produce good and memorable songs.
      Oops I think you've just helped me reminisce about my Music teaching days. 😂

      Thanks Raymond. very true, in fact I only came across the rest of the song recently when I found it in an old book I was looking at. I wonder if other songs,not just Music hall ones have other verses such as 'Happy Birthday'' with verses pertaining to the original Birthday person.Interesting thought.
      Gertrude there's something I'd like to say
      Now you're over the hill today,

      Harry Champion's wonderful 1911 recording of "Henery" is posted elsewhere, but another version would be welcome. I have heard a couple of updated verses as well.
      And by the way, if Harry couldn't afford a carriage, he probably couldn't have afforded much of a tandem, either. A decent one nowadays costs like a reasonably nice used car.

    • @pmadamson
      @pmadamson  10 років тому

      Thank you for the feedback. Interesting point about the cost of Tandems although I am sure they would have been a cheap option when the song was written and it does demonstrate how the value of things has changed. I suspect the modern price of a Tandem is based on rarity rather than the materials which in many ways is a modern day con. I will have to look up Henery. I rememeber it used to be inone of the school books we had which included The Titanic,Mrs Hoolichans' Christmas cake , Santy Anno and many more of these great classics.

    I've just received a comment as follows which has not come through to here. It is a s follows.
    Moogaar1
    Wheel should be spelled "weal"
    I looked this up and it is quite right as 'weal' means according to wikipedia
    may refer to:
    Happiness, positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy
    Prosperity, the state of flourishing, thriving, good fortune, and/or good social status
    Wealth, abundance of valuable resources or material possessions
    Well-being, a healthy, happy, and prosperous condition
    Welt, a ridge on the caused by a blow from a slender object, such as a whip or stick
    In the context of the song this makes sense in relation to woe.
    I have to concede this is a good and fair comment. That said when I typed the word I saw the spelling of wheel to mean just that . The wheel of the bike as in the Happiness it would bring to them both and the woe of other aspects of their marriage .
    Thanks Moogaar1, your feedback is appreciated and I've certainly learned a new word. Incidentally other versions of the song are spelt wheel also but I suspect that is the result of historical translation and the aural tradition. In reality both make sense but I suspect Weal is correct in context.
    Should spelled be spelt I ask myself (LOL)

    • @pmadamson
      @pmadamson  4 роки тому +1

      Always a problem where singing is concerned. When I did my Finals I had to sing for a 45 minute Recital.
      I got up at 4.00a.m. so 9 a.m. was mid-day to my system thus alleviating singing flat by being half asleep.
      I was nervous as anyone would be but once I hit the first note I settled quickly and it was all going well until they asked me to skip a number because they were late at the beginning. It totally threw me and I just about passed on the nail. Nerves comes from fear - fear of what. Ask yourself what is the worst thing to fear ? You may answer failing the exam. Most exams can be re-taken. The worst thing that could happen is the roof falling on your head. A local gas explosion or Earthquake. Think of it like that, and it is unlikely to happen but it a makes the exam fall into insignificance.
      Maybe research calming techniques as these can be very helpful. Hope you overcome your nerves and as is often the case, you will rise to the occasion once you get started.
      Wishing you well ...Hope this has helped a little.

      HiTisba, It is the original song but not the original version . Not sure who first recorded it but is a song much older than me. Many people these days only seem to know the Chorus and when I discovered an early manuscript I thought it would be great to sing in my care home concerts and subsequently one for you tube. I wish I was the original but not that famous I'm afraid.The Tune was the first song to be generated on a computer but even that wasn't the original version. Wikipedia probably has some information on it's early performances and recordings.

    bruh i js rewatched the beginning of scream on netflix and this song was the first thing i heard what is the meaning

    • @pmadamson
      @pmadamson  3 роки тому

      The Original Version as in my version here, albeit Musically updated, is basically a Victorian Love Song built around a Tandem Bicycle. It was originally written in 1892 but the melody was used for the first computer generated song in 1961 which to some has a somewhat scary feel to it. The One used in scream was just a new recording to get the effect and set the scene. The Song was popular in the Music Hall era and was a mainstay in carehomes and still is. If you want to get an audience involved sing Daisy bell (It's correct title)) They always join in and it has even been mentioned as google's favourite song. Its called " a bicycle built for two" not Daisy Daisy

    • @pmadamson
      @pmadamson  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for your comment. The official 1892 Song was called Daisy Bell as I've stated. However the Manuscript says in brackets (Bicycle built for two) as an extension of Daisy Bell. I should have included that in my title but not as an a k.a..
      In my live concerts people often refer to the song as Daisy Daisy as it culled from the chorus so I felt it merited the aka credit.
      In retrospect it should have read
      Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two)
      a.k.a. Daisy Daisy.
      Thanks for bringing that to my attention.
      It is interesting how a song can develop titles of their own depending on the Public's reaction and the feel of the words whether it starts or ends with a bracket or develops a totally new name. Some people often use the chorus to arrive at a new title while other often take the first line. Titles get really interesting when the words of the title are not mentioned in the lyrics.I'll probably spend hours now thinking of examples. Space Oddity by David Bowie springs to mind which often gets called Space Oddysey due to misheard or expectation. Thanks again and hope that is cleared up.
      Wikipedia has a picture of the original manuscript under Daisy Bell. The same picture is in my accompanying video at the beginning.

      Hello Haden,
      Hasta donde yo sé, esta versión es la canción original, ya que utilicé un manuscrito muy antiguo para la letra. Es el mismo que aparece en Wikimedia.
      Por supuesto, no grabé el Original como tal, ya que hay grabaciones en you tube que se remontan mucho más atrás. El mío es un arreglo de una canción más antigua.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daisy_Bell
      As far as I know this version is the original song as I used a very old manuscript for the lyrics. It is the same one featured on Wikimedia
      I of course did not record the Original as such as there are recordings on you tube going back much further. Mine is an arrangement of an older song.

      @@hadenalvites1240@Haden Alvites ya veo. Sí, esta es mi versión. Utilizo una grabadora Zoom Multipista y grabo todo yo mismo, incluida la instrumentación y las voces. Esta canción en particular fue grabada en 2014. Una vez que he grabado la canción, busco en Internet imágenes libres de derechos de autor o de dominio público para hacer una película ilustrada. Por lo general, trato de utilizar un enfoque más moderno de la música en lugar de crear grabaciones auténticas de la época original. Personalmente, no veo el sentido de recrear algo que ya existe. Creo que las primeras grabaciones serán bastante chirriantes, lo que les da autenticidad y ciertamente hay un lugar para la nostalgia en el mundo de la música. La única excepción para mí es que si estoy grabando música modal, me gusta usar instrumentos más antiguos junto con el bajo y la batería, que son el pilar de la música más moderna.
      I see. Yes this is my version. I use a Zoom Multitrack recorder and record everything myself including instrumentation and vocals.. This particular song was recorded in 2014. Once I have recorded the song I trawl the internet for copyright free / public domain images to make up an illustrated film. I generally try and use a more modern approach to the Music rather than create authentic recordings from the original time. I personally don't see the point of recreating something that already exists. I should think early recordings will be quite crackly which gives them the authenticiry and there is certainly a place for Nostalgia in the Music world. The Only exception for me is if I'm recording modal Music then I like to use older instruments alongside Bass and Drums which are the mainstay of most modern Music.

Not everyone approves of what I'm doing but I believe by arranging in more modern ways it can sometimes reach new audiences and take them back to the originals as a kind of History of Music awareness. I used to teach Music in Secondary schools and time taught me that one of the best ways to reach pupils was using Classic rock and other styles to introduce the Classics rather than going straight in to the originals which children would automatically reject as outdated.
