Hi Pete!! I found your video a couple of weeks ago and followed it to the T. This resolved the smell on my car's air conditioning unit. Now my car smells good as new. Thank you very much.!!!! 😄👍
If it smells like mildew/old newspaper, you have mold. If it smells like fish or burnt wire, you have bacteria. Either way, this method works. Do recommend for the filter to be removed first before spraying. I would spray the cowl and thru the slot were the filter was for better coverage and penetration. You may need to repeat if any of the odors come back after the lysol smell dissipates (about 2 days). Replace your filter twice a year. After spring and before fall.
cabin filter scrubs the incoming air. It's not located after the cooling/heating cores. The real swamp is at the bottom of the evaporator housing... people park on sloped driveway! It prevents condensate from draining and quickly turns into a science experiment! 👍
@@DoubtingThomas333 yep, no easy way to simply pull out a "bottom tray" to clean the biohazard. the not easy way is to remove the glove box, blower and filter to gain direct access to Evap. coil. ✌🏻

Replace cabin air filter as well. I think this would usually hit the cabin filter first. My cabin filter was dirty and stinky. Replaced it with Febreeze filter and perfect. What a difference.
Very good advice. Also most newer cars have a cabin air intake filter. They get quite dirty often, and rarely get changed. I prefer slowest fan speed to give the spray/vapor more time to condense. Sometimes 3 days in a row might be required for a strong infestation. As required until smell is gone. I also give mine a retreat about once a month.
HotRod Ray not all vehicles are as easy as some but good point. The paper OEM filters are just that...cheap paper media. I recommend K&N washable/removable if it is available for your model. Since the K&N requires air dry.....not too difficult in the Texas summer sun but still probably a good two-four hours to air dry. You can either stay home and catch up on DVR, use another vehicle or as last resort use the OEM paper media filter as temporary filter until the K&N dries..... for temporary use any filtering media is better than nothing. Also depending on vehicle and your climate I recommend inspection about half what the owners manual says. My Ford manual says R/R every 20K miles. I got curious one day and checked it at 15K. Wear looked like well over 15K miles. Also another recommendation is have the new filter readily available. If for some reason you need to change your not going back in there twice. That is my general rule for most normal wear/tear items. If not needed they can be returned or kept on hand for future use.
Another trick for me and works for a few days. I spray a fairly liberal coating of Febreeze on the new filter. You get a nice fresh blast of freshly scented air for a few days. The scent is up to you but I usually use Hawaiian or something tropical. My theory is if I can’t bring the vehicle to Hawaii then I will bring Hawaii to the vehicle.
Great advice 😂 My routine is to take out cabin filter (as you have mentioned in your updated note) to insure unobstructed flow of spray. Aside from the hood air input vents (fresh air vent switch on) I spray a bit on top of the running AC blower, this time with recirculation switch on. And yes, turning AC off leaving fan on a minute before shutting engine off, helps dry evaporator. Say a few hundred meters before parking car. Your video helped reinforced what I've been doing. Thank you, Sir.
Thank you! I was battling mildew smells, which makes sense now since you've explained the condensation. I replaced my cabin filter and now it smells like manure for a few seconds when I turn my a/c on! Went from bad to worse! Going to try this next. Thanks again.
Just did this to my truck, but I used about 90% white distilled vinegar and 10% febreeze. Vinegar is said to kill most molds and it also neutralizes odors. Anything disinfectant these days is hard to find lol. Thanks for the video, I went to change the cabin filter, but my truck doesnt have one. Hopefully this helps the musty smell.
Second step: locate the re-uptake ducts inside the car, usually underneath the dashboard assembly, near the floor. With the air on recirculate, repeat the same process, and let the system settle overnight.
@@julyzerg1 , the ducts are usually centered around the console. Put the air on full, no AC, recirculated, and spray the *daylights* out of the ducts, preferably with Ozium.

Nice, clear "how to do" and greatly appreciated. I have an 11 year old G35 and the problem has never happened but I'm close to buying a new car that has complaints about mildew in the ac.
Replace cabin filter/pollen filter to get rid of any musty aircon type smells in the car cabin. The smell is from all the bacteria/mold etc on the filter element, also it's a good idea to clean out the filter housing with some anti bacterial cleaner.
There's also another smell which means you need a new evaporator. It's the dreaded Band Aid smell, similar to the smell of fresh paint. It's the smell of the PAG oil.

Would love to be able to keep my windows down BUT too many damn thieves 🤦🏽♀️ P.s I did this and it worked. It took the smell out of my AC for maybe a couple weeks- a month. I would have to keep redoing it (which isn’t bad at all) but i do SUGGEST that you make sure to clean the leaves and debris out of your outdoor AC vent (sorry don’t know what it’s actually called) because when I cleaned that, that’s when my AC stopped smelling as bad. You can also put dryer sheets under your seats :)
Another tip would be (like he said) if you spray this or any other chemical on the COIL' and run the a/c it will accumulate everything ie. Dirt, hair what ever else that would stick to it wet. Great video btw. Like a window unit my son sprayed deodorant on the coil while wet and I had to remove it from the cage and wash the evaporator. It was filthy with grime after one day of use.

Wouldn't it make more sense to turn the fan on to LOW instead of HIGH so that the Lysol spray is not blown away from the evaporator surface? The whole idea of the fan is to suck in and deposit the Lysol on the evaporator and air duct surfaces which I believe may be better accomplished by a slower moving air stream than a faster one.

Thank you very much good job
Very helpful information, thank you brother. God bless you .
Mine smells but nothing like mold. It smells like silicone caulking when it's wet. It goes away after about 30 seconds, but it's strong for that first bit. Any suggestions on what's the smell?
Bacteria many many
Thank you for your advice I’ll try it
*Wouldn't be best to take the cabin air filter out while doing this?*
Yes
absolutely yes!!! when you are done, a new filter will return
Thank you no one new what was going on !
Simple product you can find at any store you say? Well sir I'm watching this in 2020 and I have not seen that simple product in over 3 months.
Jk great video man! 👍
I got some a few months ago
I love you!!! I have been asking everyone for a long time!!! Yahoo!!!👍🏾😁😁😁😁😁😁
I was thinking the same. maybe it's not powerful enough to pull through but unlikely. I'm gonna try it on low, med and high because it smells so bad
Thanks Pete. It worked! Thanks for your hard work.
thanks for sharing this video... it helps a lot... (subscriber here from the middle east).. thanks..
Thanks
If I use heating fan instead cool a/c , can I use Lysol , can it clean during winter?
Very clear presentation, with good old common sense! I will try it.
AWW MAN I WANTED TO SEE YOU RUN!!!
WOULD it be better to remove the cabin filter first? Mine is right where you were spraying. I just replaced it recently.
Curious if it is necessary to remove the cabin air-filter for this to be more effective. Would love some advice on this?
There is an update in the description that says to remove it.
Thank you for the much needed information. Great video!
Will an alcohol spray work the same?
“Product you can find in any story” (right before lysol shortage during coronavirus)
you did it!! You caused the shortage! 😂
LOL, video was made years before the cover, haha, good point
