That's a good point. If you remove Alabama’s six national championships under Nick Saban, the SEC still has seven titles from four other teams. Over the past 20 years, the ACC has earned three championships, split between two teams, the Big Ten has two titles shared by two teams, and the Big 12 has one. I do think the SEC was overrated this year, but will that trend continue? No one can say for sure, but based on its track record, I believe the SEC will bounce back. A lot of it is simply SEC fatigue, and honestly, if I were a fan of another conference, I’d probably be tired of hearing about them too.

Imo the championship argument overall is extremely flawed given the at best EXTREMELY SUS selection process used by this sport historically. This is the first season that has incorporated a legitimate playoff system enabling any program to actually make a championship as long as they compete to win.
Since 1998 - 21 teams went undefeated and didnt make a championship or playoff. If you go undefeated an dont make a championship game, its a little ridiculous to act like the post season was ever legitimate in the first place. (historically in the AP era - teams would claim undefeated seasons regardless if they were ranked #1 by all polls, yet in the BCS and CFP era teams were ridiculed for trying to do the same - thats nonsense).
Additionally there are multiple seasons (affected at least 14 teams) since 1998, in which teams beat opponents that made a title game over them. Again this never made any sense, and calls into question the legitimacy of the post season selection process. How do people justify teams like 00 Miami or Washington not being a championship contending team when they literally beat FSU/ Miami in the season only to watch FSU get steamrolled in the BCS title game?

I think the SEC is the best. That doesn't imply that every SEC team is head and shoulders above a similarly slotted team in another conference. The SEC, for a long time, produced one of the top teams every year. This, however, is the age of parity.

the whole 13 in 18 years narrative is very misleading, and a majority of their championships were either nick saban, or factored by sec bias or lucky outcomes.
2007, lsu won it, they were lucky to be in the BCS championship as Wvu should of been playing osu but they choked to Pitt in their final game
2008, Utah got snubbed by sec bias when they were CLEARLY the best team that year
2009, Nick saban won (if Alabama wasnt there, sure Florida could of won it, but Texas played Alabama just as good or better than Florida, and tcu and Boise state were in the mix)
2010, auburn beat Oregon in a back and forth game, and again a mid major got left out, tcu who went undefeated
2011, osu got snubbed out of the bcs (which doesn’t mean they would of won it but they would of had a chance), and the sec got 2 teams in the BCS championship game
2012, nick saban won (no sec team really had a shot to win it this year besides alabama)
2013, Florida state beat auburn (you could argue that msu should of been in over auburn but I think auburn was probably the better team)
2014, osu won it where the closest sec team was Alabama
2015-18 Alabama or Clemson won win (in 2017, there was Georgia, but with Georgia, a decent part of Kirby smart’s success is because of nick saban since he was an assistant for him. Also that year, Oklahoma showed that they were clearly on the same tier as the top of the sec, but just didn’t get the bounces to go their way in the playoffs)
2019, lsu won it where there is really no argument against them since they were one of the greatest teams of all time
    2020, covid year, it’s irrelevant
2021, Georgia won it (where they played Alabama)
2022, Georgia got bailed out by osu’s kicker in the semi finals, and then got gifted tcu in the national championship
2023, Michigan won it (closest sec team Alabama maybe Georgia)
2024, only one of the final 4 teams is a sec team (a team in its first year in the sec and should of lost to asu)
That leaves really only 2, maybe 3 years where the sec won it all that wasn’t because of sec bias, low chance outcomes that screwed other teams in favor of the sec, or because of Saban.

Now this is what I’m talking about-only thing I would add is that 2009 Texas team was better than that Alabama team. They were in the whole game even after colt got injured in the first part of the first quarter (at that point they were beating bama) yes this is hypothetical but that backup got close to beating bama in a natty so imagine the starter (who was heisman finalist) 😅

The SEC has a down year and it isn't NIL, Bama it was coaching, Georgia it was Offensive Coordinator play calls, dropped passes and not so great CB play. Tennessee is just not so great QB Play/injuries, Ole Miss fell apart at the end, Texas will be better under Arch, South Carolina beat expectations, Vanderbilt exceed expectations, Missouri fell off, Arkansas is still trying to figure it out, Kentucky poor offensive play, Texas A&M was just disappointment, Florida will look better this year and LSU will do better with a new coach and QB.
But overall SEC is the best period, most National Championship over the last 20 years, most 1st Round Draft Picks in the last 20 years and the SEC is the pathway to the NFL period because it has the best coaches and best pipeline.

@MattBeGreat, something I think we all have to realize is that in life, there are phases. There are empires that rise and fall. Take my team ND (in Markus Freeman we trust), the reason they get propped up to a level by the media like the SEC is cause in the 20th century, all throughout, they dominated, and gained 11 championships and gaining a championship almost every decade. Same with USC getting quite a few championships. (which is why i disagree with Cali just focusing on NFL, they can have awesome college teams, they just need better coaches). The SEC for almost 2 decades got to enjoy being a dominate empire, but as that guy in the video with the super long comment says, the playing field has even out (which makes it slightly more unpredictable and exciting). If you actually go back in time and look at some programs, some enjoyed their own dominance. In an Earlier video you wrote off Nebraska having a "nice run in the 90s" Nebraska if you look at the 70s and 90s, have 5 champions, which is nothing to snuff at, and why Nebraska fanbase has HIGH expectations, cause they've won before.. (even Minnesota at one point in time won 5 championships) and you can kinda see that as the B10 having its own era of dominance, and it was SEC's turn.. and now... im not so sure any conference will have a high level dominance anymore thanks to NIL and transfer portal. If Vandy or Rutgers in 30 years gets one championship (or I guess in Rutger's case, a second), I honestly would not be surprised. (even Syracuse has a championship when they got that first ever black Heisman winner on their roster.)
(apologizes for the ramble, just letting this adhd brain let it all out lmao.)

6:34 fun fact the sec actually had 9 teams in the 2024 preseason ranking and by the end of the season only 4 of those teams was left and 3 of those teams final loss was to big 10 teams or independent like notre dame vs bulldogs which what people said those teams were better then the big 10 teams and we not even including the sc vs Illinois game 😂 but yes the media hypes up the sec so much 9 teams out of 25 in the preseason ranking is crazy and not even half of those teams lasted smh

Matthias, you also have to consider that the whole “2021 NIL thing” is also the fact that those hoarded rosters only really cleared out a few years after the implementation of NIL. So obviously there’s that delay. And then boom, 2 years later B1G is making a run. Just food for thought. I mean on top of just that in 2022 Georgia beat OSU by 1 due to a crappy kicker. So it’s not like Georgia was THAT insane in 22 anyway, you can see the rosters start to even out.

Matt, it's pretty difficult to take the BIG 10 seriously when that conference can't even count how many schools are in their conference. Can they only count up to 10? If the BIG 10 schools took off their shoes and socks, could they count past 10 then? There are 18 schools in the BIG 10. Can they at least change the conference name to the BIG 18? At least that would show that they can count above 10.

I do agree NIL and the transfer portal is spreading the talent but at the same time, I think the quality of college football has got a whole lot worse. The quality of college football as a whole is way down due to players moving around and not being developed. As we get further into players getting paid, there will be an expectation for players to be good straight from high school with less focus on development. If you perform, you get paid. If you don't, nobody has time to develop you. Once the people making money from College Football get the eligibility requirements removed, this will be a true pro league with contracts and people staying as long as they get paid.

Matt with all do respect on your SEC takes about “the last 13 of 18 national championships” witch is great and all but the national media (espn, abc) can decide top 25 poles as well as “how good teams are” but in reality you have to play the games. The SEC have so many championships because they put them in them always like how would an 13-0 fsu team not get in over an 11-2 bama team like what 😂.And I know they lost horribly to Georgia but they had so many opt-outs, and maybe they weren’t pound for pound as good as bama but they still deserved to be in.

It proves that IF the SEC only had to play TWO ranked teams per season, like the other conferences that played an entire powderpuff season, the SEC wouldn't be so more worn out because of their tougher schedules. SEC played 13 games and more than half were worth something. The others played 13 games with 2 or 3 decent games. Who's gonna be more worn out, injured, in transfer portal, or concerned about their futures in the NFL? EXACTLY

I think both pre-NIL and Post-NIL both have been easy for the big dawgs to hold all the talent, however with it being a money game now it's going to be dominated by those who have all the money. Idk maybe I'm too casual but I feel like we're going to have a long period of B1G and SEC dominance more than the SEC dominance of the last 20 or so years.

I say this as an Oklahoma State fan (I am biased). I think a lot of people are not happy because the SEC gets the benefit of the doubt over almost anyone else. Here's an example (and lmk if I'm biased an out of pocket here please): in 2011, the national championship game was a rematch between LSU (13-0) and Bama (11-1). Bama would avenger their loss to LSU and win the championship. HOWEVER, 11-1 Big 12 champion Oklahoma State (with more ranked wins than Bama) didn't get a chance to play in the BCS title game because despite having more ranked wins, Bama had a better quality loss (OKST's loss came right after a tragic plane crash that killed members of our athletic department). Ever since, Big 12 fans (and especially OKST fans) have hated the SEC. Let me know your thoughts, I'm staying subscribed either way 🫡

I think it comes down to a few things. Where do most of the best recruits come from (the south) and where do most of the best recruits go to school (the south) but what I’ve noticed with NIL is that it really doesn’t matter where you go to school, if you perform at a level has either exceeded your or your programs expectations you’re able to capitalize on that w monetary value. And more schools nationally have more monetary value then the schools in the southeast. In terms of conference the sec is easily the most well rounded but certainly from now on every year they may not produce national dominance over cfb for the next however many years. It’s interesting so much parody in the game now

    • @jwindy69
      @jwindy69 16 днів тому

I also believe teams and even conferences just end up going through times where they are just not as strong. Teams will have periods where they aren’t that great for 5 years but for the next 3 after 5 years of struggle they are great. With NIL we will see this more often it will allow more unique scenarios for whatever the next “blue bloods” are 50 years from now

With that being said it's not easy being a top team even as Oklahoma has always been in the Big 12. So to Matt's point he is correct a lot of the teams that will come over to the SEC from other conferences would have a hard time winning as many games as they did in their original conference. And as much as I don't or didn't like the SEC. I am only a fan because my favorite team is in the conference. But we have to understand that if Alabama wins 12 out of 20, Georgia wins 7 in one conference. How does that not prove that that conference is the best?

The SEC has a great football tradition and it cultivates that tradition with media partners.
    That's fine.
The problem is the lack of objectivity and a subjective presumption of the SEC's superiority when it comes to rankings and placement.
It's unearned by those kids on the field.
EACH SEASON the championship needs to be earned anew.
In recent history, if you bet on Nick Saban and the Tide, you were likely right. That's just maybe the greatest run of football in history.
Bad news is that that run is over. Nick left because he didn't want to deal with NIL.
It's partly from greed, partly from schools treating kids like crap, but it's here now.
The SEC is still probably the best football in my opinion, but Lane Kiffen is a fool of he thinks the ambient SEC awesomeness just gets to beat everyone else.
It's about matchups, gameplanning, and having the depth to survive a long season.
The SEC usually has those things, so they have dominated.
I'm a Big XII fan, but I still love SEC football because I love good football. I played college football, and you have got to root for your home team.
Let's be real: Bama wasn't that good this year, Ole Miss underperformed for talent, Georgia was down, Mizzou had problems, and none of them were playoff worthy.
A Big XII school is the only SEC school left, and that's probably because they had an abnormally easy SEC schedule.
The reality now is pay-for-play, for better or worse.

People dislike the SEC for very understandable reasons- they all get overrated every year, which then ranks them up, which then means if they lose to each other they get a built-in excuse for losing. That's how we end up with absurdities like two loss bama in the playoff, telling the whole nation that brand name is all that matters, results on the field don't. The fact that the SEC melted down SO quickly when NIL started is proof that the SEC was never as superior as they were always overhyped to be. If that were the case, the rest of the country wouldn't have taken over so quickly. We are already at two years in a row with not only no SEC champ, but no SEC appearance in the title game, and the only reason they had decent representation THIS year is because they stole the best teams from other conferences. Then there's the obvious, which is fans pretending like losing to two 6-loss teams, both double digit underdogs, somehow doesnt disqualify Bama from the playoff. Or even worse, the fans that try to leech the glory off of teams that actually win in their conference. Imagine an NFL fan being like "I cheer for the entire AFC North" it's just absurd

  • @garyklyce713
    @garyklyce713 16 днів тому

Yes the SEC is overrated this year because it was never appropriately rated in the previous 20+ years or so and here’s why. Since the start of the BCS through the 4 team playoffs. The road in which a college football champion was crowned went through SEC country, ACC and southern territory of the PAC-12. That means schools from the BIG 10, northern PAC-12, BIG-12 and ACC teams always played at a geographical disadvantage in these bowl/playoff settings. Imagine a scenario in which the NFL told teams like the Packers, Steelers, Patriots, Bears, Giants, Seahawks etc… that they could never host a home playoff game no matter what their record was. You would say that’s not real football and it’s not in the true spirit of competitive sports. So essentially the SEC, Clemson, Texas, USC and Florida St. basically were given a guaranteed home field advantage by the NCAA and its sponsors, and as you start to stack those bowl, playoff and championship wins it creates a snowball effect in recruiting and rankings that led to a dominance that the SEC has been able to maintain, especially when you compound academic standards compared to the other major conferences you get the last 20+ years of SEC greatness. So why is that changing now, easy answer is NIL and Transfer Portal. But I would also add CFP home playoff games location and calendar of the bowl season. The SEC is simply not built for the type of weather you will see in places like Ann Arbor, Columbus, Happy Valley, Madison, Eugene, etc.. So with roster parity home field is really going to play an advantage moving forward.
