  • Rauschenberg was the man who in this century had invented the most since Picasso.” -Jasper Johns
A rare-to-market and important work from Robert Rauschenberg’s groundbreaking ‘Combines’ series, ‘Hawk’ exemplifies the artist’s radical influence on the postwar canon. By infusing art with “objects from life,” Rauschenberg created a revolutionary new language of artistic expression that captured the immediacy and energy of everyday life.
In 1960, a group of seven ‘Combines,’ including the present work, was presented at Leo Castelli’s seminal exhibition in New York. ‘Hawk’ is the only example from the series remaining in private hands, coming from the Collection of Senator Herb Kohl, a businessman, politician, collector and philanthropist, who acquired the work in 1974 from Allan Stone Gallery
