I was shopping around for a new synth for creating ambient pads. I looked at Diva and Hive, and I am glad I stumbled upon Novum. It sounds amazing out of the box! Glad I found it right when Black Friday sales are going on!
Chris I love your videos. Your enthusiasm in your craft can not be overstated. Thank you for explaining things to the newbies in a language that makes sense.
Great granular synth and video too.Your work is getting better and better.Love your style!!!! .I've been waiting for months, but today is the day!!!!Thanks for sharing Chris
Man! This is an amazing gift. Love your enthusiastic style, and this tool will be used in my interactive generative installations and my actual research using sensitive algorithms, modulated in real time with the public breath rate (radar detection). Thanks !
This and Abyss are INSANE and an absolute BLAST to play around with. As a "newbie" to the world of sound design and ambient soundscape creation, I see these as being a big part of what I create. Thank you! for your videos. You've opened a new world to me that I am excited to explore.
Invested in Novum just before I found your tutorial. Had worked thru the User Manual which is comprehensive and your demonstration reinforced the key Novum principles extremely well…
I've done a lot of mixes over the years and I find this to be a very cool synth, it will save me time so that I can make even more new mixes without wasting my last effort. Thanks for the review!
one thing I started doing so I don't have software overload is I ask "can my current software do the same" I have Omnisphere with granular so can stack 8 in multi together, however will give this a try - its all about workflow these days
Hi Chris, how do you make those granular "cricket" sounds that start at minute 17:30? I've heard similar ones several times in your tutorials, I've tried to reproduce them, but I can't get close to that sound.
Chris... Brilliant overview bro. I have to throw my good cans on... but I am curious about stereo treatment of the sounds and effects?!? I am hoping for mind blowing stereo to go with this... seems like a must buy. Thanks.
It's got full stereo capabilities. Meaning - the sounds are in stereo, you can pan in stereo, you can send your effects in stereo, etc. Hope that helps!
Very nice overview of Novum, thank you. So Novum is the most advanced granular synth in your opinion? What do you think about Quanta 2 (in comparison)?
That's a tough call. I never really clicked with Quanta but perhaps someone might be able to convince me otherwise. NOVUM is great too. They both have their strengths!
Thank you, Chris. I'm enjoying your content and take on a number of products. Plus how you back it up with rich sounding textures. Add to that your passion for quality sound design I'll be watching for more, so keep up the great work! James Conrad Tucker.
Im playing with the Demo and so far so good. Dawesome produces some very amazing synths. Its a littel pricey but i just may pickthid up.some excellent pads and audio landscapes.
Really incredible instrument! Your informative videos are wonderful...:-) Also, I will not be buying the GR-1 now... So amazing! The over the top VO intro gave me a chuckle!
Yes, similar but the fact alone that NOVUM can separate single pieces of audio into 6 distinct layers using algorithms that were based on artificial intelligence is quite unique. I also sounds very different. Your mileage may vary! Link for NOVUM in description. Cheers!
I own Novum a few days now and, maybe it's a totally different problem but how can I work with my own samples so that they fit in my scale I work in. Maybe it's like an "outing" but how do I get my samples the way that I can play chords with it? It's difficult to explain and as said before it's not really a Novum problem, more a overall problem... if anyone can help me figuring out where to start would be very helpful. I like to add that I know music theory basics butwhen it comes to drag a sample in it and adding it to the scale I work in, I feel like a noob. Thanks in advance to the people who like to help
NOVUM isn't easy to work with, especially with chords. Go through some of the presets and see if you can find an example of a chord friendly patch. Perhaps using it for what it is good at (textures, granular patches) and then using another synth for chords might be the better option.
this is life changing. thank *YOU* is there a hardware granular synth that comes close to this? the tasty chips gr-1? you just helped me decide to do more ambient music. thank *YOU* for the pure inspiration.
Depends! I think the easy answer would be NOVUM although KULT has its own character that is hard to replicate in other synths. I’ve heard good things about his new one, but it’s in a different category.
I got mine today...one question about the sample material to use. Maybe it's a stupid one but is it designed for monophonic samples, mean no chords or something like this, right?
I'm not sure exactly how the granular engine works but I think single note waveforms tend to work the best. You can ask around on the Dawesome Village on Discord and you may get a more detailed explanation!
@s1gns0fl1fe thanks for your answer, didn't know about the Discord channel. That's definitely a very good starting point. I got only an hour to play around since I bought it and I guess all I need is time to experiment with it.
Granular synthesis has always been a favorite of mine (I love Reason's Grain synth) and this breakdown of Novum has me serious considering buying myself a Father's Day present. Thanks for the amazing review. And side note, I was under the impression it was pronounced TAM-brr, not TIM-ber. Have I been saying it wrong this whole time?
You are so welcome! Also, I looked it up - Webster claims you can pronounce it either way. It has French origins and can be pronounced with the TAM but may also be correctly pronounced just like the term for lumber.
Thanks for this exploration, Chris. I'm loving NOVUM. I've already made some pretty bizarre soundscapes! The only thing I don't yet understand is, why different WAV's that you load create different colors in the 3D display and Timbre Flower, as well as those little dots representing each lane. For example, some WAV's that I load will create pink and purple displays... while others only yield white and pale yellow colors. Maybe it has something to do with the overtone content of your WAV? And what programming advantages exist for knowing what each color represents? Or maybe the colors don't mean anything... they're just eye candy? I won't lie to you: the Timbre Flower must be creating some extremely subtle variations of your waveform, because frankly, I'm not noticing a whole lot of difference between the various Flower dots that I click....(?) A viewer below refers to The Mangle and to Iris 2. To me, Novum is what those two synths "wished" they were... Novum takes their ideas to greater fruition...
Love your channel! Hope you can assist with an issue. I downloaded the trip version of Novum on my Mac (I'm using Logic Pro X as my DAW), and when I download the additional content required to use in Novum, it is automatically installing it to my downloads folder, and not into Novum, so when I try to use Novum it tell me the same is unavailable. Any idea how I can fix this? Thanks, and keep up the solid work!
Try dragging / copying the content folder that gets downloaded to somewhere you’ll want to keep it permanently. Once it’s there, open Novum and drag the folder from that new location onto Novum’s interface. Novum should then recognize where you have it located. Good luck!
This sold me on Novum. I was choosing between Novum and Falcon 3. Falcon 3 May have more but it’s UI is horrible and it’s so damn convoluted. Novum it it! Thank you!
As predicted, this guy is only making pads and drones which seem to be all this synth is good for. No precision position edits is a big limitation imo, you literally can't zoom into the sample
If the sample contains clicking or popping sounds then the synth will reproduce those sounds too. Entirely normal behaviour with granular synthesizers.
I can hear you talk and tell epic things all day, man. Thank you for this tutorial...

Hi SOL, I’m going to learn ambient music 🎉 and use Novum as a go to synth.
I just bought this today. Wowsa Wowsa. I’m going to really love creating with this
90-day fully featured trial? Yes please… 👀

Love this! Purchased 💙
This is a crazy cool synth
Great video, I love your enthusiasm for this synth!
This is a must buy for me. I create mainly experimental, soundscapey, drone electronica and can see how Novum would be perfect for that 👍
Hey man, I was wondering if your Ableton starting template is available on your Patreon. Thank you so much for everything!
The template I use is called "Utility" and it's available on material.bandcamp.com - Cheers and enjoy!

Nice demo but I don't like everything soaked in mushy reverb this way. That makes it sound like every other software synth/sampler package.
