    My Evo is 21 years old. Zero leaks. Runs like a Swiss watch. Never been opened up. The secret? Start her up and let her idle for a few minutes without revving it. Let that oil pump up the lifters and get around the engine. Then off for a blast. Great engine. The most reliable Harley ever.

      No one understands how crucial warming up these bikes is! Glad to hear yours is still running like a top! Totally agree with you, these are probably the best Harley engine ever made!

      Do you wait until the choke is pushed all the way in before riding? Or start riding with it at the half way point?

      @@Tobagator Yes push the choke in before riding! You should really only need it for super cold start ups. Thanks

      Yep all 5 motors i own get the 5 minute warm up. And all 5 engines are perfect. 2 have over 250,000 miles on them and they run perfect. Take care of your engine and it will take care of you

    Pull the Wrist pin , never hammer it out the rod bearing in the bottom are cage bearings they bend and kink if the rod is moved by a sharp blow with the hammer . you can make a wrist pin puller out of 4 inch long 3/4 inch pvc and a 8 inch 3/8 bolt . lot safer then a hammer .

    I put a new cone on my Shovelhead last September. I couldn't get it to run good. Bought to a shop. They got it running. A couple of my bolts came loose, and oil all over my front exhaust. Tightened all to specks, not leaking now!

    i had a 1989 FXLR custom lowrider with this eng. the rocker box seals started leaking on a road trip, that was a problem and lifter block gaskets leaked once.. other than that, great bike, i loved riding this bike to sturgis back in the '90's.

    Let it get nice and warm before beating it and turn the idle up a bit, the Evo will last a LONG time.

    Ok mate, first off you need to lap the bottom of the cylinders to get them flat. Trock Tools sold a lapping plate for this purpose, it works great, I've done probably 500 motors using it and it solves the problem, updated gaskets alone usually will come back,, just FYI too late for this build. Harley made a lot of EVOs, made them until the dies got unusable, the later FXR 2,3 4, were all horrible parts. I loved my 95 inch Sputhe motor in my 84 1/2 FXRT, totaled in 2015. I lost interest with the twin cam, but still serviced them untill 2010 when I retired from H-D. Enjoy the experience and ride to live.

    • @houseofchoppers
      @houseofchoppers  3 роки тому +2

      I have seen the lapping plate before, I think v twin might still sell them, Ive honestly never known any shops that use one though. Im sure it would be good to have but I haven't had a problem thus far without it. Thanks

      @@houseofchoppers quality shops and knowledgeable engine builders use them. Also don’t use a hammer to get the wrist pins out. Make a simple and cheap press tool. You don’t want to put that kind of shock on the rods and rod bearings.

    • @houseofchoppers

      No you can do it in the frame, just follow the same procedure, you'll need a shortened Allen to get to the rear rocker box bolts but besides that no problem.

  • @thomaskirkpatrick4031
    @thomaskirkpatrick4031 5 місяців тому

    Base gaskets DON'T just start leaking. If they are leaking you should be looking at the cylinder condition. The leaking is most likely caused by too much crankcase pressure.

    • @houseofchoppers
      @houseofchoppers  5 місяців тому +3

      Few years later and it still doesn't leak... gaskets still rot out over time.

      @@houseofchoppers I'm getting some slight weeping/leak that's spraying on where the front bold connects the carb to the head and caking up on the back of the carb. Also looks a bit greasy around where the top of pushrod tubes go into the head.

    • @frankbilotta6302
      @frankbilotta6302 3 роки тому +1

      They only leak due to the oil pump. Due to the bike sitting a long time without running. There is this little thing called gravity that causes this issue. ✊🏻🤫😃. The oil drops from the upper end of the motor down to the check ball and spring. If the spring in the pump is to weak that is the issue. Oil drops gumming the bottom end. Most really old engines shovels and evos. Probably older all have this issue. A little work in the oil pump spring check ball area and it’s a none issue.
