1968 at Bathurst was another year of firsts. The Holden HK Monaro made it's first appearance, along with advertising on cars. 25 year old Allan Grice first raced at Bathurst in 1968, finishing a creditable 18th with Bill Tuckey in the #26 Fiat 124 Sport. But it was privateer Bruce McPhee with Barry Mulholland driving the #13 Wyong Motors Monaro GTS327 that beat both factory teams and all opposition that day. Great Aussie racing!

Fantastic. No powder puffs there in their ice suits and run offs and a Conrod straight with a bend in it. Brings a tear to the eye.

11 minutes quicker than the previous record over 800 k's! Shows the great strides taken in performance. They would be very happy with 30 secs over 1000 k's now.

I've always liked that an HK Holden Kingswood sedan was entered in the this particular race. 1:10
I _think_ it even won its class, but I don't know how many other vehicles were actually in that class. 😬 (Class C?)

Lol DAM it's a hard test for those poor old 68's cars, it's basically hub caps off, numbered up & thrashed senseless until it either wins or breaks. XT's seemed to handle "a little" better than the Monaro's but only a little. I see the old VE? Valiant mixing it up with the pack, wonder how it went? Good footage to watch thanks for posting it.

    • @AsinineComment

Chrysler Valiants entered were usually the Pacer 4dr sedan. However, 2 yrs prior to the Monaro's ground breaking win, Chrysler V8s were being punted up, down and around the mountain.
In '66, two separate factory-backed teams brought the VC Valiant sedan to Mt Panorama. - and with Chrysler's Torqueflite auto trans.
