Poincaré's contributions to probability are few but fine. He studied its foundations (Poincaré's roulette argument), introduced average case analysis for basic algorithms, and gave the first algebraic treatment of card shuffling. Curiously, his most famous result isn't his.

Persi Diaconis, an American mathematician and statistician, was born in 1945 in the United States. Working as a maths and statistics teacher at the Stanford University, he is mostly renowned for his study of randomness, such as cards shuffling.
In 1974, he graduated from Harvard and started his career at Stanford as a teaching assistant and then as a professor. He later worked at Harvard, Cornell and even in France, at the University of Nice.
As a multiple award winner, he is a member of the U.S. National Academy.
